IMPROVEMENT IN EYEGLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,022, dated January 9, 1877; application filed September 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. SPENCER, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improvement in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in an improved projecting nose, which is straight from the points a. a to b b. This nose-piece is not solid, but is attached to the rim of the eyeglass by the scroll c c d 01, thereby leaving the nose-piece flexible or springy, making it easier for the wearer than when the nose-pieces are concave, as in many, or carried up to a point and made solid, or nearly so, so that all relief from the springiness or flexibility of the nose-piece is lost.
Another improvement consists in this When the eyeglasses are put in as usual in my frame, the nose-pieces a etc b b, when the bow' spring is compressed, meet each other squarely and lie together the entire length, fitting as though they had just been cut apart, and are suitable for the majority of noses; but by turning the eyeglass upward with the finger the nose-pieces are placed at an angle, and when pressed together come in contact only at the points a a; and by turning the glass downward the angle is changed and the nosepieces come in contact only at the points I) b, making them easily adjustable to noses that are very thin or very full as well as to the ordinary nose.
I claim as an improvement- The straight flexible nose-piece a b, rigidly secured at both ends to the lens-frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
