This invention relates to a vise for centering cylindrical objects, and is adapted particularl for use in connection w1th a test bench or generators motors, and the like, wherein there is a shaft adapted to be brought substantially into alignment with the shaft of the generator to be tested.
' An object of this invention is to provide a vise which will automatically bring a, cylindrical object to be gripped into the horizontal plane of a part with which the cylindrical object is to co-operate while the vise jaw moves at an angle to the horizontal. In the case of a. generator, motor, or the like, it cooperates with a drive means havin a clutch for connection to the generator sha Another object is to provide a vise of this t pe. which permits free access to the top of the generator being gripped thereby.
Another object is to provide a vise which has four 'aws, two of which are out of the horizont plane.
Another object is to provide means including one of the movable aws for grippin rec tangular objects, such as magnetos, whic are to be centered with respect to some of the mechanism.
These and other objects, as will hereinafter appear, are accomplished by this invention,
which is fully described in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichigure 1 is a side elevation of a vise embod mg the invention;

Fig. 2 is a. partial view similar to Fig. 1 showlng the vise gri ping a magneto.
The embodiment i lustrated comprises a vise having a frame extending over and adapted to rest upon guide rails 11 and 12 which are supported at their ends upon supports 13 and 14, which in turn rest upon a top plane surface 15 of a test bench, or the like. This test bench is provided with a shaft (not shown) but which carries a chuck 16, which is driven from a. suitable source of power (not shown).
One or more bars 17 lie beneath the rails 11 and 12 and are adjustably carried on the frame 10 means of screws 18 and 19. By loosenmg t ese screws the vise may be moved both longitudinally and transversely with relation to the chuck 16. Longitudinally channeled side bars or ides 20 are secured to lateral extensions on t e frame 10 b means of screws or the like 21. The channe ed portions of the guides 20 are turned inwardly so as to face each other. and to serve as guides for a carriage 22 which has laterally extendmg p1ns23 on which are j ournaled wheels 24 on one side and 25 on the other. The two wheels 24 on one side are spaced apart some distance, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, while the smgle wheel 25 on the opposite side is spaced substantially midway between them. As will later be seen this permits of a selfallgnment of the gripping jaws on the cylindrical object to be held.
The wheels 24 and 25 are preferably beveled, as shown, and fit into similarly beveled grooves in the siderails 20. The carriage 22 is thus movable along the guides 20, which are preferably set at an angle of substantially 22 2 to the horizontal leading upwardly and forwardly toward the opposite ]8.WS 10 and 10 of the vise. The carria e itself has two jaws 26 which are space some distance apart, as shown in Fig. 2, and which normally lie below the level of the plane passing through the center of the chuck 16.
Each of the jaws 26 has two jaw teeth 26* and. 26 which are so placed as always to include a cylindrical object between themselves and the opposing jaws 10 and 10 of the vise body. This is due to the fact that they are moved upwardly and forwardly on an angle of substantially 22 /f, and also to the fact that they are so moved alon this 22% line that a'point substantially midway between them moves along a straight line X-Y passin through the intersection of the horizontal line, through the center of the cylinder A and the forward circumference of this cylinder. Three positions of the jaws. 26 are indicated, showing them gripping cylinders A, A' and A of different sizes.
A bar 27 extends across the rear end of a nut 29, into which is threaded a screw 30 which has a reduced end. 31 which passes through a block 32 which is hingedly mounted at 33 on the main frame 10. A hand wheel 34 is secured to the reduced portion 31.
Thus it will be seen that as the hand wheel 34 is turned, the carriage 22 is moved back or forth.
The frame 10 has a projection 10 in which is slidably mounted a screw 35 which is provided with a key and keyway 36cto prevent the screw from turning. The screw is threaded into a hand wheel 37 which is gu ded in a suitable openin 38 in the projectlon 10 The inner end 0 the screw 35 is provided with a channeled gripping end or aws 39. which is adapted to make contact with a cylindrical object A, such as a generator, WhlCll is to be gripped in the vise.
Thus it will be seen that the jaws 26 may be moved back and forth to ip the generator A, and these will be su cient to hold it for most -pu poses. If, however, it is so desired the jaws 39 can also be advanced so as to further grip the cylinder A, or the aws 39 alone may be used.
Figure 4 shows the vise when used to grip a magneto B. For this purpose an adapter C is used which is of an L-shape in cross section, which is adapted to be grip ed between the shoulder or tooth 26 on t e carriage 22 and the'jaws 10 of the frame 10. In this connection it will be noted that the vertical leg of the adapter C makes contact at the top with the upper portion of the jaws 10, and at the bottom with the vertical inner side of the frame '10. The magneto B is set loosely into the angle thus formed between the bottom and side of the adapter 0, and the magneto is held in laceb the 'ppin jaw 39. The ada ter is so orme as to ring the magneto s aft B into alignment with the chuck 16 of Fig. 1, when the magneto B is thus gripped by the vise. The adapter C may take several forms, dependin u on the magneto, or other object, with WhlCl'l it is inten ed to be used.
It will also be observed that the inner faces 10 and 10 are oppositely and equally inclined from the vertical so that when c lindrical objects, as A, are forced a ainst t em these objects will be automatica y centered with respect to a line through the chuck 16. It will'be seen that when a cylindrical object is gripped between the surfaces 10 and 10 on the one side and the jaws 26 and 26 on the other, it will automatically be brought to the vertical level of the chuck 16.
Having thus ipped the generator, motor, magneto, or ot er ob'ect to be tested to a position wherein its s aft is at the level of the chuck 16, it is then necessary to adjust the vise laterally so as to bring it into substantiall the vertical plane of the chuck 16. This is one by loosenm the screws 18 and 19, thereby ermittin t e frame 10 to be slid back and 11 and 12 until the enerator A or the magneto B is substantiafiy in alignment with the chuck 16, so that the latter may grip its shaft. The screws 18 and 19 are then set so as to clamp the frame 10 of the vise firmly on the guides 11 and 12. I
While I have shown and described but'a few embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of man modifications. Changes, therefore, in t e construction and arrangement may be made which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.

A vise for centering cylindrical erators and the like comprising two fix jaws substantially equally spaced on opposite sides of a given line, and jaws movable at an angle to said line adapted to grip between themselves and the fixed jaws cylindrical objects of different sizes so that the centers of the various cylindrical objects all remain on the given line, said movable jaws being located beneath the object to be gripped so asto have the top of the object accessible.

A vice for centering cylindrical generators and the like comprising two fixed jaws substantially equally spaced on opposite sides of a given line, jaws movable at an angle to said line adapted to grip between themselves and the fixed jaws cylindrical objects of different sizes so that the centers of the various cylindrical objects all remain onthe given line, and another jaw substantially on the given line, lying between the movable jaws,
