The invention relates to folding chairs, and its object is to provide a sturdy chair that w1ll afford maximum comfort to the user and fold into small compass for storage or transportation.

rIhe invention consists of the novel arrangement and combination of parts illustrated in the drawings in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa chair embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side view of the chair in folded condition and Fig. 4 a side view of one of the seat supports.

2, 2. The pivotal points 3 of the legs 1 and the members 2 are located at predetermined positions in the lower portions of the legs 1. A plate or support 8 is secured to each member 2 at a selected point thereon and projects forwardly therefrom a selected distance. A seat 9 of suitable form is pivoted to the supports 8 at such point forwardly of the members 2 that, when the seat is turned up, it will lie close to and substantially parallel with the back of the chair.

The upper ends of the legs 1 are adapted to engage the lower side of the seat, the stops 10 limiting the forward movement of the said upper ends of the legs. A rung 1l is connected to the upper portions of the legs l.

The front legs 12 are pivoted at 13 to the side edge of the seat at points forwardly of the pivotal points of the seat on the supports 8. These legs cross the legs l respectively preferably on the outer side thereof; and a rod 14 pivotally connects the crossed legs respectively. A rung 15 also connects the lower portions of the legs 12. The

13 and 14 are in predetermined positions such that when the seat is raised the legs 12 will swing to a position substantially parallel to the back and in line with the seat, the rear legs being rocked upwardly on the pivots 3 into contact at their upper ends with the rear end (now the lower end) of the seat.

To fold the chair it is necessary only to swing the seat into substantially parallel relation with the back. This upwardly swinging movement of the seat elevates the legs 12,

12 somewhat which in turn rock the legs 1, 1 on their pivots 3. The lower ends of the

legs

12, 12 approach the lower ends of the legs 1, 60 1 so that the folded chair will stand, if desired, on said legs.

That I claim is:

1. A folding chair comprising a back frame, two .pairs of pivotally connected legs, two brackets secured to the back frame and projecting forwardly therefrom, a seat pivoted to the brackets and to the upper ends of one pair of the legs, the latter pivotal .points being forward of the pivotal points of the 70 seat on the brackets and the lower end of the back frame being pivoted to the other pair of legs below the middle points of said legs and the seat in open position being adapted to rest adjacent its forward end upon the upper Y ends of the latter pair of legs.

2. A folding chaircomprisingabackhaving downwardly extending side members, two brackets fixed on the back and projecting forwardly therefrom, a seat pivoted to the for- S0 ward ends of the brackets, intersecting front and rear supporting legs pivoted together at their intersecting points, the extended side members being pivoted at their lower ends to the rear supporting legs and the upper ends of the front supporting legs being pivoted to the seat forwardly of the ,pivotal points of the seat on the brackets and the seat in open condition being adapted to rest adjacent its forward end on the upper end of the rear supporting legs.
