Description
J. MEYER.
BEER FAUCE'I.
No.185,943, Patented .Tan.2,1877.
NJETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. wAsmNGToN D C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN MEYER, OF WASHINGTON COURT-HOUSE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEER-FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,943, dated January 2, 1877 application filed December 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN MEYER, of Washington Court-House, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Faucets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ventilating beer-faucets; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby air can be admitted into the keg or barrel just as may be seen necessary.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
a represents a faucet of any desired construction, and which is made of either metal or wood, as may be preferred. Through the top of the stem, just near where itis driven in the barrel, is a hole, 0, ofsuitable shape, which communicates with the hole through faucet. Passed through this hole, and through the hole in the stem, into the barrel, to the top of the liquor, is a pipe, d, made of any suitable construction or material through which the air passes into the barrel, to destroy any vacuum which may be formed there. To the outer end of this pipe is secured the metallic plate 6, which is concave on its under side, so as to conform to the shape of the stem, and which has a suitable washer, g, fastened to its under side, to form a tightjoint around the hole 0. To the top of this plate is attached a ring, h, for drawing the pipe 61 out from the barrel or keg and stem when necessary. The point where the pipe comes through the plate 0 is raised above the surface and inclined forward, so that the stopper for closing it will fit it better. This plate is held rigidly in position by the catch 6, that catches over one edge, and the headed set-screw 0, that catches over the opposite side.
Passing around the stem of the faucet, between the plug j and the plate 6, is the collar n, which has a slot, 1, through two of its sides, and which has the lever l pivoted between its two ends, which form this band. Through the two slots pass the set-screws 3, which serve both to hold the collar in position and as stops to regulate the distance the collar shall turn around the stem.
The lever 1 has a piece of rubber or other suitable substance, 2, secured to the under side of its shorter end, to form a stopper or valve for closing the end of the pipe, while the other end of the lever extends up to the plug, and is held upward by a suitable spring, 5. One end of this spring is notched, so as to catch over the under side of the lever, and thus prevent the spring from slipping off.
When it is desired to remove the pipe for any purpose, the collar n is turned partially around until the end of the lever bearing the valve no longer bears on the plate, the setscrew 0 is removed, and then the pipe can be drawn out by means of its ring h.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the stem a, hole a, pipe d, plate 0, packing g, catch 2', screw 0, and a self-closing valve, substantially as set forth.
2. The collar n, having the lever l pivoted between its ends, and adapted to turn partially around on the stem, as specified.
3. The combination of a spring-lever, a partially-revolving collar placed on the stem, at self-closing valve, a plate, 0, having a hole through it, and secured to the pipe that ventilates the barrel, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of December, 1876.
JOHN MEYER.
