Description
Patented May 24, 1932 I i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH KENT SMITH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BERYLLIUM iDEvELOP- MENT CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE ALLOY No Drawing. Application filed January 21, 1931. Serial No. 610,278.
This invention relates to alloys and particularly to an alloy suitable for use in silver- Ware, instruments and the like, in substitution for the rarer metals ordinarily employed.
In carrying out my invention I provide an alloy of beryllium, aluminum and silver, with the beryllium preferably under 50 per cent. by volume. My preferred alloy is 29 per cent. beryllium, 38 per cent. aluminum and 33 per cent. silver, by Weight. In preparing this alloy, some magnesium is added for cleansing purposes.
This alloy is relatively non-tarnishable, has a gravity of about 3, is resistant to dentiug or dinging, is comparatively stiff and strong, and is workable and rollable.
The foregoing properties make the alloy particularly useful for silverware but it is also used for all other cases where similar properties are desirable.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, an alloy comprising beryllium, aluminum and silver, each roughly constituting about one- 5 third of the alloy by weight.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an alloy comprising beryllium, approximately 29 per cent., aluminum, approximately 38 per cent., and silver, approximately 33 per cent.;
80 by Weight.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
JOSEPH KENT SMITH.
