ALVIN A. PERELES, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCQNSIJNI, ASSIGNOB TO IEEBELES BROS. INQ,
OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CQBIQBA'IIQN WISCONSIN HEAIDGEAB,
Application filed March 5,
The invention relates to head gears.
The general object of the invention is to provide a novel head gear composed of separate sections which when assembled together form a football helmet or head guard and in which the inner section may also form a so-called aviators helmet.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the head gear embodying the invention, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the outer section of the device;
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional View of the head gear.
Referring to the drawings, the head gear embodying the invention comprises an inner section designated generally by the numeral 4 and an, outer section generally designated by the numeral 5.
The inner section 4 is in the form of a so-called aviators helmet which has a skull fittin top portion 6 and side head flap portions? having extensions 8 that extend under the chin or lower jaw and are adapted to be connected together by the chin strap 9 secured to one of said extensions and having a snap fastener 10 adjustably mounted thereon and engageable with the usual resilient eyelet 11 on the other extension. This helmet has an inside lining 12 of flannel or other suitable material and an outside covering 13 of leather or other suitable material. The outer section 5 is formed to provide a skeletonized head receiving frame having a head band portion 14 with side protecting extensions 15 and crossed bands 16 extending over thetop of the head and at right angles to each other, each of said bands being secured at their ends to the head band and being secured together intermediate their ends where they cross each other. Each of the above parts are composed of a heavy inner padding layer 17 secured by stitching as at 18, 19 and 20 to the outer covering material 21, such as leather.- The side extensions 15 have 1932; Serial no. 596,966.
The outer section 5 it will be noted from Figs. 1 and 3 is formed to fit over the inner section 4 and is secured thereto by snap fasteners 24, the parts of which are respectively mounted in flap portions 7 and side extensions 15 so that both parts of the device are firmly secured together and the strap fastening of the inner section holds the device on the head. When the parts are so assembled, the inner section forms an additional reinforce for the outer section and also a means for holding said section in position on the head and it also at the top especially, forms a somewhat cushioned lining for the top of the complete football helmet. When not playing football, the boy or other wearer may remove the outer section and use the inner section as an aviators helmet and as the outer section can be made at a small additional cost the convertible features of the device give it distinct advantages.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a head gear, the combination of an outer padded skeletonized head protecting section, and inner helmet section, means for detachably securing both sections together, and means for securing one of the sections about the chin of the wearer.
2. In a head gear, the combination of an outer padded section having a head band por tion provided with side head protecting extensions and top head bands, an inner hel-; met section, means for detachably securing both sections together, and means for securing one of the sections about the chin of the wearer. V
3. In ahead gear, the combination of an L outer padded skeletonized head protecting section having side head protecting extensions, an inner helmet section having side extensions, detachable fasteners mounted on said extensions for securing said sectiOnsto- IOO gether, one of said sections having chin engaging extensions, and detachable means for connecting said chin engaging extensions together.
4. In a head gear, the combination of an outer padded section having a head band portion provided With side head protecting extensions and crossed top head bands, an inner helmet section having an inner lining, means for detachably securing both sections together, and means for securing one of the sections about the chin of the wearer.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
ALVIN A. PERELES.
