Description

J. W. MAYNARD.
TOBACCO-SAFE.
Patented Jan. 2, 1877.
N PETERS. FHDTOLITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D O UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIOE.
JOHN W. MAYNARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-SAFES.
Specifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,831, dated January 2, i877; application tiled June 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MAYNARD, of Chicago, in the county of Gook and State of of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in whichl igure 1 represents a front elevation of a tobacco'safe embodying my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 represent'vertical central-seetions of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The revenue laws require that tine-cut tobacco shall be sold only at retail from the package as purchased from the manufacturer, and upon which has been secured the proper revenue stamp.
To comply with the law, and render the removal of the tobacco from the package easy and convenient, it is the practice to pack the tobacco in pails, drums, or kegs, which is objectionable, in that, when the cover is removed from the pail, the tobacco becomes exposed to the air, and consequently soon becomes dry and unmerchantable.
The object of my invention is to provide a safe to enclose the pail or package containing fine-cut tobacco so as to prevent the air from coming in contact with the tobacco, and thereby keeping it moist and in a merchantable condition for sale at retail, and to so construct the safe as to admit of conveniently removing the tobacco from the package or pail without removing the package from the safe. To that end my invention'consists in a case with or Without a bottom, adapted to encircle the package or pail, and provided with a hinged cover, so adjusted as to admit of being opened and closed at will, as is hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the safe, which may be made of any suitable sheet metal, wood, or paper, and of proper size to allow the pail U to pass freely within the same, and so as to leave an air-space between the inner surface of the safe and the outer surface of the pail, and is made without a bottom, so as to permit of its being placed over and around the pail, as shown in Fig. 2. D is the cover, which is hinged to an annular rim, E, loosely fitted around the upper end of the case, and so as to admit of being turned thereon, and bring the front. of the cover to any desired point without turning the case.
The object of providing the movable rim, to which the coveris hinged,is to permit of the case remaining in one position, so that the name or brand of the tobacco painted or otherwise placed upon the outer surface of the case can at all times be seen by purchasers from in front of the counter, and at the same time admit of the cover being so adjus ed as to enable the salesman to remove the tobacco from the pail, and from either side of the counter.
When it is desired to keep the tobacco in cellars or damp places, I prefer to construct my said safe with a bottom to the body thereof, and with the movable rim and hinged cover, as described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the bottomless case A, of the removable rim E, and hinged cover D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the case A, provided with a bottom, of the removable rim E, and hinged cover D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN W. MAYNARD. Witnesses:
N. O. GRIDLEY, N. H. SHERBURNE.
