Description

y 3 E. L. CARLSON 1,858,262
SHEET METAL BEZEL FOR UNBREAKABLE CLOCK CRYSTALS Filed Oct. 27, 1928 Patented May 17, 1932- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELOF L. CARLSON, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. INGRAHAM CO., OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION SHEET-METAL BEZEL FOR UNBREAKABLE CLOCK-CRYSTALS Application filed October 27, 1928. Serial No. 315,403.
My invention relates to an improvement in bezels for unbreakable clock-crystals, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture a bezel reduced to the simplest possible terms and yet be eflicient and attractive.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in a sheet-metal bezel for unbreakable clock-crystals having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of a nickel clock provided with my improved bezel;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view thereof partly in vertical section and partly in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a detached face view of the bezel;
Fig. 5 is a detached view of the bezel partly in section; and
Fig. 6 is a broken enlarged sectional View of the bezel and crystal.
In carrying out my invention, I produce from a piece of sheet-metal or bezel comprising a relatively-wide annular retainingfiange 7 an offsetting stop-shoulder 8 larger in diameter than the diameter of the said flange, an inwardly-extending crystal-retaining flange 9 and a crystal-receiving groove 10 :1: located within the stop-shoulder 8 which is interposed, as it were, between the said flanges 7 and 9. I
In the use of my improved bezel, an unbreakable crystal 11 is forced into it by any approved means, either by being initially bowed or bowed in the act of its introduction thereinto, the crystal being sufiiciently larger in diameter than the groove 10 to maintain the crystal in bowed form after the edge of the crystal has been inserted into the said groove, in which it is retained by the effort of the crystal to flatten out and by the retainin -flange 9 of the bezel. The assemblingange 7 of the bezel is inserted into the forward edge of the sheet-metal clock-case 12 in which it is frictionally retained, being positioned with respect to the case by the engagement of the projecting stop-shoulder 8 with the forward edge of the case, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
My improved bezel is not only eflicient in so far as mounting an unbreakable crystal is concerned, but cheap to produce, easily assembled and attractive in appearance. The other details of the clock may be of any approved form and construction and do not concern my improved bezel, so long as the clock-case is open at the front for the reception of the same.
I claim:
A sheet-metal bezel for clock-crystals, comprising a cylindrical assembly-flange adapted to be telescoped into a clock-case, a hollow stop-shoulder formed at the outer edge of the said flange and larger in overall diameter 05 than the same, an inwardly-turned outwardly-inclined retaining-flange forming an extension of the said stop-shoulder, and an annular groove located within the said hollow stop-shoulder; and a concavo-convex unbreakable crystal having its edge inserted into the said annular groove in which it is retained under tension against outward dis placement by the said inwardly-turned outwardly-inclined retaining-flange, with the 7.3 inner face of which its outer face, adjacent its edge, has surface-contact throughout the width of the said flange for the exclusion of dust and for compensation for changes in the crystal due to shrinkage. so
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
ELOF L. OARLSON.
