' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST WUENSGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [85,812, dated December 26, 1876; application filed February 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AUGUST WUENSCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Manufacture of Articles of Paper or Pasteboard, which in vention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of boxes or vessels of paper and other similar material; and it consists in the combination, with the sides of the box, of a folded metallic rib-joint having an extension for the handles, and made in one piece, and folded so as to form recesses on opposite sides, for holding and uniting the edges of the sides of the box, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improved box; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line w a, Fig. 1 5 Fig. 4, a horizontal section of a molification of my box; Fig. 5, a horizontal section of the rib-joint; and Fig. 6, a detached perspective view of the rib-joint and bail-loop, showing the method of securing the bail.
The letter A represents a vessel of paper,
.pasteboard, or other suitable material, constructed according to my invention, having the body or sides composed of two or more segments, B B, united at their vertical edges by means of a rib-joint, G. Said joint consists of a strip of metal, whose edges are bent inwardly and then outwardly, so that grooves or recesses opening in opposite directions are formed at the edges of said rib-joint. These grooves receive the edges of the parts B B, after which the edges of the joint are compressed, so as to close the grooves and clamp the edges of the parts B B firmly in the recesses.
The rib-joint is constructed with an extension, 0, which is bent over inwardly, forming a loop for the bail, the end being folded closely to the inside of the rib-joint, and secured under the inner lining of the box or vessel.
The letter d represents a series of indentations formed in the outside of the rib-joint, which form projections on the side in contact with the paper of the box, the said projections being embedded in the paper, and serving to more securely hold the rib-joint in place.
Instead of being made of segments, it is evident that the vessel may be made of one piece, and united, as shown in Fig. 4, by a single ribjoint.
What I claim, ters Patent, is-
In combination with the sides B of a box or vessel, the metallic rib-joint 0, made in one piece with an extension, 0, and folded to form recesses on opposite sides, in which the edges of the body of the box are clamped, for the purpose of uniting the sides of the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of January, 1876.
