IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.

Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 185,796, dated December 26, 1876; application filed November 10, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ASHER B. STEVENS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to so construct a childs chair that it can be used as an elevated seat at a dining-table, or converted into a low seat with a table in front to receive playthings, or into a canopied carriage for outdoor use.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the chair when adjusted for use as an elevated seat; Fig. 2, a side view of the chair when adjusted for use as a low-seat or canopied carriage, and Fig. 3 a front view of one of the pairs of legs.

To the under side of the seat A of the chair are secured two rigid frames, B, connected together by a cross-bar, a, and to these frames are hinged a front pair of legs, D, and a rear pair, D, the two legs d d of each pair being connected together by a rail, 6, and each leg d being secured to a plate,f, connected to the frame B by a pivot-pin, w.

The two pairs of legs can be adjusted to either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. They are retained in the position Fig. l partly by pins 1' on the frames B, against which pins bear the upper ends of the plates f, and partly by arms E, one end of each arm being pivoted to the plate fof one pair of legs, and the other end of each arm bearing against a pin, h, on the plate fof the other pair of legs. ()n raising the arms E free from the pins h, the two pairs of legs will assume the position Fig. 2, and the chair will be supported on Wheels m, with one of which each leg is furnished, each wheel being confined laterally between the wooden leg and a plate, a, secured to the same. The two pairs of legs are retained in the position Fig. 2 by pins 19 p on the frame B, the plates fof the legs bearing against the said pins.

On each of the arms H of the chair are two headed pins, 11 and w, to the former of which are adjusted the slotted bars I, the two bars being hinged at 3 one to one edge, and the other to the opposite edge of a board, J, which,

when the chair is in the condition Fig. 2, so as to form a carriage for outdoor use, may be adjusted to form a hood or canopy, supported partly by the back J of the chair, a pin, j, on this back entering the board, and partly by the slotted bars, which act as stays. When the chair is in the condition Fig. 1, so as to form an elevated seat, the board J and slotted bars may be permitted to hang loosely at the back of the chair, out of the way, and when the board is required for use as a table for playthings it may be adjusted to the horizontal position, (shown by dotted lines,) in which case the arms I are supported partly by the headed pins 1;, and partly by the pins w.

The foot-rest G is secured to two plates, 9 g, and the latter are pivoted to arms 9. secured to the under side of the seat A, so that the foot-board can be turned up out of the .Way, to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the foot-board is turned down it is retained in its proper position by pins k on the arms g, against which pins the upper ends of the plates 9 hear.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the seat, its frames B, and legs D D, pivoted to the frames, with the arms E and pins h and i.

2. The combination of the two pairs of legs and wheels m. with the frames B B of the seat, and the pinsp p on the said frames.

3. The combination of the toot-board G and its plates 9 g with arms g g, secured to the under side of the seat A, as specified.

4. The combination of the board Jand slotted bars I I with the headed pins 1; and w on the arms of the chair, whereby the said board may be used as a table.

5. The combination of the board J and slotted arms I I with the back of the chair, and with headed pins on the arms, whereby the board may be used as a canopy, as set forth.
