N ED' 'STAT ES PA NT OFFICE Joan E. nanermusmv, or WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DEDICATED BY AS- AMERICA IGNMENT TO THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OIE AIPABATUS FOR BRANDING THE GRA] )E ON CHEESE Application filed February 20, 1930. Serial No. 430,004.
(GRANTEDUNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3,-1883, AS AMENDED APRIL 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) This application is made under the act approved April 30, 1928, and the invention here n described, ifpatented. may be manufactured and used by or'for the Government 5 for governmental purposes without payment to me of any royalty thereon;
I hereby dedicate the invention herein described to the free use of the public, to take 7 effect upon the granting of a patent to me. My invention relates to a branding apparatus of general application but the primary function of which is to mark, imprint, or brand suitable legends'on the top or bottom surface of cheese that has been paraffined and placed in cold storage to age. Without such identifying mark the average person who is lacking in experience in classifying cheese would be unable to determine the qual ty of the cheese. 1
One of the principles of the invention is to provide an improveddevice of the class ]ust referred to, whereby the marking fluid may be evenly spread upon the irregular surface and deep into the paraflin and at the same time'refiow the paraffin over the ink branded letters, which isv necessary to preserve the cheese from m ldewing. Another object is to provide ready means for regulatingthe feed of the marking fluid to the deep cut metal letter sector by means of inked ro lers. Another object is to provide a revolving brush that makes contact withthe'deep cut metal letter sector and removes all of the paraffin or other matter that may congregate T in the letters, and which tend to clog such letters, the brush being positioned in such a manner as to clean the metal letters before they are inked. A still further obiect s to provide a device of the class described that 1 is simple in constructiomeasy to operate, efficient in service and so constructed to insurev the branding of the cheese even though it may have an uneven'surface.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire apparatus; Figure 2, a detailed view of the circular branding carriage; Figures 3 and 4, a perspective view of the revolving carriage.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that from bed or base 1, on which is mounted 'num so formed with recess 7 to accept a circular heating unit 8- which is connected to terminal Qwhich receives the electrical en-' ergy for heatng unit. On the-bottom side of carriage 6 the deep cut metal letter sector units 10 describing the grade are fastened to carriage 6 by means of four steel capped pins- 11' which passes through the carriage bed 6 through holes 12 that are counter bored on top and bottom 13.. These steel pins 11 are threaded on the end 14 and are fastened to. sector units 10. There is a small compression, spring 15 that pin 11 passes through and sets between carriage 6 and sector units 10. By th s method the branding surface adjusts itself to any irregularsurface of cheese when brought in contact w th the surface of cheese.
'At the top of hollow shaft 5 there is located-a handle 16, which is used to bring the circular branding carriage 6 down to the cheese surface. On'arm 2 there is also connected a metal brace formation 17, which is fastened on arm 2 at-point 18, also on housing .3 by the means of screws, which forms a support for. a pulley 19 at the top and over hollow shaft 5. There is also an opening in arm 2 at point 20 where a pulley 21 is located by the means of a shaft 22 on which a chain 23 passes over pulleys 21 and 19 and through hollowshaft5,toswivelpin 24, this chain carries counter weight 25 on one end and branding carriage 6 on the other end. This method permits hollow shaft 5 on which branding carriage 6 is fastened by means of twoset screws 26 to turn two-thirds of its circumference on swivel pin 24.
There is a stationary shaft 27 located on bed 1 at point 28 on which there is a revolving carriage 29 on which there is assembled a revolving brush 30 and two felt friction rollers 31 and 32. The operation of this revolving carriage 29 and brush 30 are as follows: H. P. motor 33 located on bed 1 by the means of a belt 34; to a grooved pulley 35, which is attached to a fifty to one reducing gear 36.- Onone end of shaft 37 of reducing gear 36 there is a bevel gear 38 Which meshes with bevel gear 39, which is fastened Q to the carriage 29. On bed lthere is fastfeneda metal brace 40 that formsa bearing 41 for "other end of shaft 37 of reducing gear 36. On shaft 37 there is a bevel gear 42 which meshes withygear. 43 on shaft. 4i. 1 On the upper end of shaft 44 thereis a sprocket wheel & on which therevis a belt=46 swhich is connected to sprocket wheel 47 Whichis fastened to a bevel gear48; 'wliichin turnmeshes with bevel gear 4,9011 revolving brush'SO which is located on revolving car- I riage '29: When motor 33" is inn-lotion 'itrevol-'ves grooved pulley of reducing gear '36 which revolves shaft '37 whichin' turn rev olves bevel gear 3'8 which revolves carri age- 29'me'a'n's ofmeshing'with' gear 39. When shaft-37 revolves, bevel gear 42 meshes with bevel-j gear-43', revolves shaft 44 which in turn revolves sprocket wheel45 on which is 1 chain *belt' 46-, which is attached to sprocket I 47 011 stationary shaft 27. I
motion.
64 which regulates the pressure on chain belt 46, an adjustable metal brace which supports. arm 2 from stationary shaft 27, fastening nut 66 for-brace .6'5.
I claim: 7
A machine of the character described comprisinga base, an upright hollow shaft upported 'by'said base, a horizontal hollow arm attached to said hollow shaft, a'branding. device having metallette'rs supported by a said hollow arm, means for heating the 'brandi'ng -device, said,branding device being adapted to embedding legends in parafiin surfaces; a stationary vertical shaft attached to said base, acarria'ge so positioned as to revolve around said stationary verticalshaft, means to revolve said carriage,-a rotatable brush attached to said carriage, means to positively rotate said brush and means wl iere'by said brandingdevice will adjustitself to any irregular surfaces'when brought incontacttherewith. v
