OF LA CHAU'X-DE-FONDS, SWITZERLAND, A COMPANY OF SWITZERLAND OPENING CASE Application filed May 9, 1929, Serial No. 361,771, and in Switzerland November 14, 1928.
My invention relates to a control arrangement acting directly on pivotally mounted shutters of the opening case for watches and analogous articles described and claimed in the pending application of George Verger, Serial No. 302,3t0, filed August 27,
The said direct control arrangement may be established either by lugs provided on the m sides of the push-pieces forming the movable ends of the case and engaging in shoulders having eyes, rigid with the shutters, or vice versa, the lugs then being carried by the shoulders and penetrating slots or grooves furnished in the sides of the push-pieces, or by means of a metallic tongue fixed to the middle of the push-piece and engaging directly by its edge the shoulder of the shutter, the said shutters being returned to their closing position by means of return springs.
According to one embodiment said return springs are disposed on the sides of the case between the extremities of the lateral arms of the push-pieces.
The invention will be more readily understood by those skilled in the art with reference to the accompanying drawings given by way of example, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my device with parts of the case broken away, the right hand shutter being in open position and the left hand shutter being closed;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
' Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail on a larger scale of the shutter control shown in closed position- Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4: with the shutter in open position;

Figs. 13 and 11 are similar views to Figs. 4 and 5 of another modification;
Fig. 15 is a plan view of Fig. 13;
Fig. 16 is a perspective view of the pushpiece of this second modification;
Figs. 17 and 18 are respectively a longitudinal section and a section along the line A-B of Fig. 17 of still another modification;
Fig. 19 is a sectional view of a part of a case provided with lateral springs, the shut ters being shown in closed position and the push-pieces spread apart; and
Fig. 20 is a corresponding plan view with parts broken away.
in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 the opening case is composed of a shell or easing 1 having a section of the shape of a flattened tube, as shown in Fig. 3.
At the two extremities of the case slide the movable push-pieces 2, pushed outwardly by springs 3 bearing against the sides 12 of a frame 12 disposed in the case and fixed to the bottom thereof by screws 12 On the upper surface of the case are pivoted, by means of hinges 10 two shutters 10 provided on each side with a tail or shoulder 1O (Figs. 4, 5 and 6), in which is provided an eye 13. In said eyes or slots 13 of the two shoulders 10 engage pins 14 carried by the extensions 2" of the push-piece 2.
Obviously by acting on the push-pieces 2 in the direction of the arrow 7'' (Fig. t) there is caused, through the medium of pins 1 1, a direct thrust on the shoulders 10 of the shutters which in turn are caused to open by swinging about the hinges 10, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will be noticed in Fig. 5 that a recess 14* has been provided in the frame 12 arranged to permit free play of the shoulder or tail 1-0 of each shutter.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 8 to 11, the pins 1% are fixed on tails or shoulders 10 of the shutters 10 and engage in slots 15 furnished in the extensions 2 of the push-pieces 2. r
The operation of the shutters takes place as before by acting on the tails of the shut- In the second modification illustrated in Figs. 13 to 16, the push-pieces carry at the middle or any other suitable point a tongue 17 of metal and adapted to possess a certain amount of flexibility, the front edge 17 of the said tongue preferably being chamfered and adapted to engage a corresponding notch 16 provided in each tail of the shutters.
Fig. 14 shows the deformation of the 10 tongue when the push-pieces have been pushed into the case for producing opening of the shutters.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 17 and 18, the frame, instead of being fixed to the case by means of ears traversed by screws 12 as shown in Fig. 1, is maintained in place by two small plates 19, whose extremities engage in notches 1 of the case 1. The said plates are tightened against the frame 12 by a circular flange 3 of the guide 3 for springs 3, which guide is screwed by means of a threaded extremity 3 intothe frame 12. Such an arrangement allows the frame to be adjusted and fixed in place.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 19 and 20 the return springs 3 which spread the push-pieces 2 and return the shutters to closed position are placed on the sides of the case 1 between the extremities 2 of the lateral arms .2 of the said push-pieces 2.
The control of the push pieces could be effected through any of the above described means. In the particular embodiment illustrated in Figs. 19 and 20, said control is effected through a pin and slot connection between the push pieces and the shutters. Shutters 10, which are hinged about pins 10*, are provided with tails 10, located one on each side of the shutter. Said tails are made with an eye 13. On the other hand, push the spirit of my invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the type described having a case and a pair of displaceable pushpieces mounted at the ends of said case, the combination of a pair of shutters pivotally mounted on said case, a plurality of tails on each of said shutters projecting into said case, means directly interconnecting said push-pieces to said tails, laterally extending arms carried by said push-pieces, and springs disposed between said arms for returning said shutters to closed position.
2. In a device of the type described having a case and a pair of displaceable push-pieces mounted at the ends of said case, the combination of a pair of shutters pivotally mounted on said case, a plurality of tails on each of said shutters projecting into said case, a pin and slot connection interposed between said push-pieces and said tails adapted to establish an operative connection therebetween, laterally extending arms carried by said push pieces, and spring disposed between said arms for returning said shutters to closed position.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
JEAN WEIL.
pleces 2 carry laterally extending arms 2.
Pins 14 rigidly secured to said arms are adapted to engage said eyes 13 with which they cooperate for transmitting the motion of the push pieces 2 to the shutters.
Preferably, the extremities '2 of lateral arms 2 'should be provided with small rods 2 rigidly connected thereto and on which the extremities of springs 3 are engaged so as to guide said springs when the push pieces are displaced with respect to the frame of the opening case.
Moreover, it is advantageous, in order to more accurately guide the push pieces in the case proper, to provide a small pin 30 carried by the frame of the'case and adapted to engage a slot 31 provided in one of the lateral arms 2 of the push pieces, said arrangement further preventing the push pieces from leaving the case.
While I have described What I deem to be the preferred forms of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made inthe constructionand arrangement of parts without departing from
