This invention relates to a music book holder, and has for one of its objects to provide a novel device of this character which shall be adapted to support a music book from a music stand at apoint below the rack of the stand and in such position that pages of the book may be readily flapped with one hand when it is desired to locate the piece of music to be played.

The invention has for a further object to provide a device of the character stated which shall be adapted to support the music book in a horizontal position and in ahalf opened condition so as to enable the pages of the book to be easily flapped, and which shall be adapted to permit the pages bearing the numbers to be played to be readily removed from the book for application to the rack of the music stand and to permit the pages bearing the numbers that have been played to be easily returned to their proper place in the book.

The invention has for a further object to provide a device for the character stated which shall embody means by which it may be readily secured to the standard of a music stand and which shall embody means adapted to permit it to be used as a support for a saxophone and a cornet or trumpet.

The invention has for a still further ob ect to provide a device of the character stated which shall be adapted to be so compactly folded as to enable it to be conveniently carried' with the folded music stand and which shall be adapted to be readily unfolded for application to the music stand when the latter is in position for use.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section illustrating the application of the music book holder to a music stand;

Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the music stand and a slightly modified form' of the music book holder;

Figure 8 is a view in front elevation of amusic book holder;

Figure 4 is a top plan view of a modified form of the music book holder in folded or collapsed condition;

Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on a plane extending centrally and longitudinally through the folded 0r collapsed book holder, and

Figure 6 is a perspective View of one of the clamp members'and the instrument support of the modified form of the music book holder.

Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 designates the base and 2 a fragmentary portion of the standard of a music stand of well known construction.

The music book holder comprises a horizontal bracket arm 3, a clamp 4 carried by one end of the arm, and a rack 5 carried by the other end of the arm.

The clamp 4 comprises a fixed jaw 6 and a movable jaw 7 of angular formation in plan and adapted to embrace the standard 2. The aw 6 is carried by a shank 8 which is integrally formed with the arm 3, and the jaw 7 is carried by a shank 9 arranged parallel to the shank 8 and provided with an inturned free end portion 10 contacting. with the shank 8. A thumb screw 11, whichis screw threadedly engaged with the shank 8, passes freely through the shank 9, is provided with a shoulder 12 contacting with the outer side of the shank 9, connects the jaws 6 and 7 together, and provides means by which they may be adjusted in the direction of each other to secure the music book holder to the standard 2 or adjusted in a direction away from each other to free the music hook holder from the standard. The angular end 10 of the shank 9 permits of the shank to yield or flex under the pressure applied thereto during the adjustment of the jaws 6 and 95 7 in the direction of each other, the elasticity thus developed in the shank 9 reacting against the shoulder 12' to hold the thumb screw against accidental movement.

The rack 5 is of skeleton formation and comprises bottom members or bars 13 and 14 and end members or frames 15. The bottom bars 13 and 14 are arranged in parallel relation and at right angles to the arm 3, and are secured centrally between their ends to the arm. The frames 15 are of substantially V-form in elevation, and are secured to and extend upwardly in parallel relation from the outer ends of the bars 13 and 14. The bars 13 and 14 areof sectional formation, and the sections 13a and 14a thereof, respectively have their inner ends pivotally connected, as at 16, to the arm 3.

The frames 15 embody base portions 15a which are pivotally secured, as at 17, to the outer ends of the bar sections 13a and 14a, and they also embody .side portions 155 which extend in upwardly diverging relation from the ends of the base portions. The frames 15 are arranged in parallel relation and at right angles to the bars 13 and 14.

In practice, the music book holder is adapted to be secured to the standard of music stand in a manner to position the rack 5. in front of the musician. After this has been done, the music book is positioned in the rack 5 with its back resting upon the bars 13 and 14 and with its covers contacting with the sides of the frames 15. As the frame sides 156 are arranged in upwardly diverging relation, the book will be supported in the rack 5 in a partly opened position. With the book in this position, the pages thereof may be readily fiapped by one hand in order to locate the pages bearing the numbers to be played, and after the desired pages have been located, they are removed from the book and placed upon the rack of the music stand.

As the bars 13 and 14 are of sectional formation, as the bar sections are pivotally connected to the arm 3, and as the frames 5 are pivotally connected to the bar sections, the music book holder may be compactly folded, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, to the end that it may be conveniently carried by the musician.

If desired, the jaw 7 may be provided with means adapted to support a saxophone and a cornet or trumpet. As shown in Figures 2, 4, 5 and 6, this means comprises an arm 18 which extends downwardly and then outwardly from the free end of the aw 7. The arm 18 extends from the standard 2' of the music rack in a direction opposite to the extension of the arm 3, and its outer end is formed to provide a hook 19 adapted to receive a cornet or trumpet. The arm 18 is provided with a hook 20 which is arranged in the plane at right angles to the plane of the hook 19 and is adapted to receive the catch on a saxophone. Due toits formation, the arm 18 is adapted to occupy a position upon the arm 3 and between the frames 15,

when the music book holder is folded, as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5.

It should be apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the music holder is simple, that it may be so compactly folded as to permit it to be conveniently carried with the folded music stand, that it may be readily unfolded and attached to the music stand when the latter is in position for use, and that it will so support the music book as to permit the musician to conveniently and quickly locate the pages bearing the numbers to be played and to permit the pages bearing the numbers that have been played to be easily restored to their proper places in the book.

lVhile I have described the principle of the invention, together with the structure which I now consider the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the structure shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made, when desired, as fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim 1. A music book holder comprising a horizontal arm, a clamp secured to one end of the arm, bars secured to the other end of the arm and extending laterally in opposite directions from the arm, and frames secured to the outer ends of the bars and located in parallel relation to each other and at right angles to the bars.

2. A music book holder comprising a horizontal arm, a clamp secured to one end of the arm, bars pivoted to the other end of the arm and extending laterally in opposite directions from the arm, and frames pivoted to the outer ends of the bars and located in parallel relation to each other and at right angles to the bars.

3. A music book holder comprising a horizontal arm, a clamp secured to one end of the arm, bars pivoted to the other end of the arm and extending laterally in opposite directions from the arm and frames pivoted to the outer ends of the bars and located in parallel rela tion to each other and at right angles to the bars and provided with upwardly diverging side members.
