INVENTOR AT-TORN EY Patented Apr. 12, 1932 UNITED STATES LANSING P. SHIELD, OF HAGKENSACK, JERSEY,
V STORE FRONT Application filed May 14, 1930. Serial: No. 452,171.
serve also as a closure for the store entrance."
The objects of my invention are to provide an uninterrupted front available for .display purposes when the store is not open for business, to provide at the same time a simple and effective means for closing the store entrance and to eliminate the necessity for doors of the ordinary type which often mar the appearance and obstruct the entrance.
During business hours the display stand may be concealed below the floor, raised above the ceiling or placed in position for use at such times at a point near the store entrance. The window, during business hours, may be concealed below the floor or raised above the ceiling or to aposition near the ceiling where it is removed from the view of the casual observer.- It will be seen, therefor, that this arrangement provides an un obstructed entrance to the store.
'VVhen the store is closed the window is raised from below the floor or lowered from the ceiling to a vertical position in alignment with the fixed windows on one or both sides of the entrance and partially or completely closes the entrance.
The display stand is also raised from below the floor, lowered from the ceiling or, if in use on the floor, moved forward to a position immediately behind the window. It will be seen that this arrangement provides the store with a front of uninterrupted windows and a continuous line of display stands while at,
the same time the entrance is effectively and completely sealed. I 9, As will become apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention embodies features of practical value, such as the greater space provided for the display -15 of merchandise and the saving in useful floor space which would be wasted if occupied by opened doors of the ordinary type. In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the store front with the entrance closed;

Fig. 3 is across sectional top plan showing the closed entrance on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
- Referring to the drawings in detail, the
numerals 1 indicate theusu'al fixed or permanent windows on each side of the store en- The numerals 2 indicate the strips of imitation marble or othersuitable mate rial which form the bases of the said permanent windows. The store is provided with semi-permanent displaystands 3 adjacent the rear of the permanent windows 1, said stands being capable of removal but ordinarily in the position described. The movable win dow is indicated by the numeral 4, said-wi'n-- dow being mounted in a frame 5 of any sui able material, preferably of metal. The window 4: is arranged between the windowposts 6 which are provided withgrooves or slots 7 in which the frame 5 is adapted to slide, the said grooves extending substantially throughout the length of said posts.
The window 4 is adapted to be raised'or lowered by any suitablemeans such as pul- 75 leys 8 mounted above and at each side of the windowand chains or ropes 9 operating in conjunction with said'pulleys, each of said chains or ropes being removably attached at I one end thereof to the frame 5 in any suit. ble $0 manner as at 10, andhaving counterweights 11 attached at the'other ends thereof. The said eounterweights are enclosed in housings 12 arranged at the rear of the window posts v 6. The window 4, when'lowered, serves, in combination with the display stand 13,.hereinafter described, to close and'lock the store entrance. 1 I T V The display stand '13 may be mounted on rollers v,or-cast'ersor may be provided with 9C any other suitable means by whichit may be moved from one position to another. The shoulders 14 of the said stand are adapted to is provided with a small horizontal top surface 15 and a relatively'larger surface 16 inclining upwardly to the 'rearfor the display of merchandise. The horizontal surface 15 is provided with a rear, window retaining Y strip 17. The vertical front surface of the ion I trance.

The base strip 18 may also be secured by any suitable means to the lower portion of the frame 5, thus convertingthe win dow 4 and the base strip 18 into a single unit to Serve as a complete closure for the en- The window 1 is provided with any number of slidable bolts 21 conveniently arranged onthe rear of the frame 5 and adapted to engage in correspondlng recesses 22 in the window posts 6. Toprevent rearward movement, the said stand is secured to the window posts 6Vby means of cured to the stands 3"by any convenientineans slidable bolts afiixed to the said stand and adapted to engage in corresponding recesses in said posts. The stand'13 is similarlysesuch as sliclable bolts 23, or any other convenient means, at the rear of said st ands, thus providlng an auxiliary means of pre-.
venting rearward movement of the stand 13.
A A hydraulic hoist. may beemployed to i raise and lower the window 4: or it may be operated manually or, by any other convenient means. v 7 7 v The drawings and specification illustrate anddescribe this invention 'as adapted to a store having its entrancelocated in the center with a permanent display window on each. side butitwilljbe understoodthat the invention can readily be adapted to; stores of thetype having a single window and acent entrance on (me e thereof. i
It is to be understood-that the invention is not to be considered ras limited to. the pre. ferredformas desc'rijbed'and as shown in the accompanying drawings, the construction of the? display stand as a collapsible member,.o f
the said standand window as a single unit or the raising or lowering of the stand or, 5 window or bothtoa-position above or below the entrance or any other modifications of theinvention may be accomplished without departing from the scope of the appended claims. r
I claim:
1. A closure for a store entrance consisting of a laterally removable display memher and an independent vertically removable window member co-operable with said display member.
2. The combination with 'a store front of amovable window and an independent movabledisplay stand adapted to be moved into and out ofco-operative engagement with each other and with said store front.
. IliOOIIlbllltttlOIl with a store fronthaving an opening-for ingress andegress, means for closing-said opening comprising a dis play unitcap'able of being moved to partially close said opening and anindependent mov able window unit adapted to co-act with said display unitto complete the closure.
4. In combination with a storefront having an opening for ingress and egress, means for closing said opening comprising a movable display unit and a movable window unit, said units being structurally independent, and means to position said window unit relative to said display unit to complete the clo sure. 7 I V 5. In combination with a store front having no doors but provided with an opening for ingress and egress, means for closing said opening comprising an independent display unit capable of being moved to partially close said opening, an independentmovable'window unit. adapted to co-act with said display unit andmeans to position said window unit relativeto said display unit to complete the closure.
