'OVERHOLTZ, OF LEETSDALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 RITER-CONLEY MANUFACTURING CQMPANY, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA OUTDOOR ADVERTISING STRUCTURE Application filed July 3, 1929.- Serial No. 375,814.. 7
This invention relates to improvements in outdoor advertising structures, and more particularly to improvements in the molding supporting means for such structures.
These structures are of steel construction and include a framing embodying a series of A-frames formed of angle members or other structural shapes and a plurality of horizontally extending structural members secured to the vertically extending members of the A-frames The poster-receiving panel, comprising several sections, and the means for supporting themolding of the panel including top, bottom and sides, are mounted on and-secured to the steel framing. The moldingis usually formed of sheet metal properly shaped to provide an attractive appearance. In some instances, however, a Wooden molding is employed.
As heretofore constructed,the means for supporting the molding have been the source of considerable trouble in erecting and dismantling and in providingefficient means for maintaining the molding in the desired position relatively to the poster-receiving panel portion of the outdoor advertising structure.
The prime object of the present invention is to provide simple, strong and efficient means for supporting the molding or moldings employed in structures of the character stated.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a molding supporting means that may be readily assembled on and disassembled from the structural framing.
In the accompanying drawings, which illust-rate applications of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an outdoor advertising structure embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, an endview;
Fig. 3, an. enlarged sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on line IVIV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5, a perspective view of a Z-bracket employed;
Fig.v 6, a similar view of another form of bracket embodied in my invention; and
Fig. 7 a detail sectional view showing a construction including a molding made of wood.
Referring to the drawings,the steel framing comprises a series of A-frames generally designated 5, and 6 a plurality of horizontally extending members secured to the up rights or vertically extending members 7 of the A-frames. This framing is designed to support the poster-receiving panel made up of a series of steel panel frames and sheet metal coverings, said sections being designated 8.
The molding surrounding the poster panel extends along the top, bottom and the two sides, and, as illustrated and as preferred. comprises a sheet metal construction shaped and bent to produce an attractive design. As shown, A designates the top molding,,B the bottom, and C the side moldings, all having substantially the same configuration and made from the same material. The moldings are adapted to be positioned upon supporting means which are inturnsupported by the steel framing.
The supporting means constitute an im portant and characteristic feature of my .invention. Said means, for the top molding A and the bottom B, are substantially simi lar and include an irregularly shapedchannel-like member or plate bracket structure 9, having a straight flat element 10 formed with bolt-receiving openings 11, and a bent member 12 formed withia portion 13 spaced from and extending parallel with element 10 and with bent'portions 14 and 15. The spacedapart elements or members 10 and lfZarejoined by a vertically extending wall 16. 'As clearly shown by the drawings, these plate brackets 9 are shaped to receive correspondingly shaped portions a, b and 0 of the moldings A, B and C, the top molding being secured to the brackets by headed bolts 17 and the bottom molding B by bolts 18. In addition to the portions a, b and 0, each top and bottom molding includes an irregular curved portion (Z and a flange or bent portion 6. r V The molding carrying brackets 9 are designed to be supported from the vertically ex- 1 iii tending members or uprights 7 of the steel framing, and for this purpose I employ Z-shaped plate brackets 19 having the vertically extending portions 20 and 21 thereof respectively formed with bolt openings 22 and 23.
Attaching bolts 24, extending through the uprights 7 and the portions 20 of the Zplates and the portions 15 of the brackets 9, are employed and, in addition thereto, headed studs or pins 25 for securing the portions 21 of the Z-plates are used.
In conjunction with the Z-plates and the brackets 9, I employ angle members or brackets 26 having the vertically extending member 27 ofv the respective brackets positioned between the part 20 of the Z-plate and the part 15 of a bracket'9. The short members 28 of brackets 26 are arranged in contact with the'elements 10 of the brackets, and areeach formed with an opening registering with the opening 11. 17 and 29 designate headed studs passed through the said openings,'and serving to tie the said parts together.-
'Inconnection with the upper molding supporting means, I preferably employ a reinforcing channel member 30which extends across the poster panel and is employed for supporting means therefrom during the operation'of pasting posters on the panel portion ofthe outdooradvertising structure. '4
The supporting means for the side moldings'C are particularly shown by Fig. 1. In
1 this form, the supportingmeans are attached to the horizontally extending members 6 of the'framing instead of to the uprights 7, and the Z-plates or brackets 19 are omitted. In place of the said plateS19, I employ spacer members 31. Members 31, as illustrated, are small channel sections interposed between the horizontahmembers 6 and the members 26 ofthe molding supporting means. Otherwise the supportingmeansfor the side moldings C are similar to'the supporting means for the molding B. Bolts32 are provided for attaching the molding supporting'means tothe members 6. I
As particularly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings,I have shown at each corner of the panel structure the molding formed with telescoping corner portions D, compr"ising short sections of the metal molding mitered and Welded together. 7 7
"In the form of Fig. 7, I have particularly shown a desirable construction in cases where wooden moldings IV are employed. In this instance, the Z-brackets 19 are employed and arranged as shown in the other forms.
I claim:
11 In an outdoor advertising structure, the combination with a support framing, of moiding supporting means associated with the framing and including a hollow angular bracket over which the molding is positioned,
a second bracket member, means for joining the two bracket members, and means for attaching said brackets to a member of the support framing. V
In an outdoor advertising structure, the
combination with a support framing, of molding supporting means associated with the framing and including a hollow angular bracket over which the molding is )ositioned, a second bracket member, means or joining the two bracket members, and means for at taching said brackets to a member of the support framing, said attaching means including a Z-shaped member.
' 3. In an outdoor advertising structure, the combination with a member of a support framing, a'molding supporting means associated with the framingincluding a hollow angular bracket member over which sheet metal molding is positioned, a'second bracket member engaging the hollow bracket member, spacing means between the support member andsaid brackets, a-nd'means for attaching the brackets to the support member.
4. In an outdoor advertising structure,-the combination witha sufportframing and a sheet metal molding, 0? sheet metal molding supporting means associated'withthe framing and including a hollow angular bracket overwhichthe molding 'is positioned, a second bracket member, means for joining the two bracket members and the sheet metal molding, and means'for attaching said brackets to "a member of the support framing.
In testimony whereof I' afiix my signature.
