PnNNsYLvAN A ournoon ADVERTISING srnuo'runn Original application filed September 17, 1929, Serial No. 393,189. Divided and this application filed August 1, 1930. Serial No. 472,286. I
This invention relates to improvements in outdoor advertising structures of the character embodying a steel framework, a poster panel construction supported by the framework, and a lattice structure associated therewith. The present invention particularly relates to a new and improved means for mounting and supporting the lattice on the structure,and is a division of my co-pending application Serial Number 393,189, filed September 17, 19.29.
In outdoor advertising structures of the character stated, it is necessary to provide parts that may be readily erected and taken down; consequently, it is the practice to construct the framework of structural steel members that may be readily assembled and secured together, and to form the panel of detachable sections. The lattice structure designed to be employedwith and be positioned immediately below the poster-receiving panel is usually of sheet metal construction. Heretofore, the erection or the assembling of the lattice on the structureand securing it thereto in the desired position, as well as dismantling the lattice, has been the source of considerable trouble and expense.
Among the objects of the present invention are, to provide simple and eilicient means for mounting and detachably securing the lattice to the structure; to provide simple hanger members adapted to be attached to the framework of the structure and having means cooperating with means on the sectional lattice whereby said lattice sections may be readily positioned and detachably secured; and to provide a new and improved sectional lattice construction.
Further objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an outdoor advertising structure embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a perspective view of the rear of two lattice sections, showing the manner of erecting;
Fig. 3, a vertical section taken on the line III- 111 of Fig. 1, particularly showing a hanger and the co-acting means on the lattice section;
Fig. 4, a perspective View of the rear of an end lattice section, showing the means for attaching the same to the end capping of a panel;
Figs. 5 and 6, perspective views showing different forms of a clip employed; and
Fig. 7, a View similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of erection means.
in the drawings, the poster-receiving panel is formed of several sections 2, joined edge to edge, and supported from a steel framework having uprights or posts 3 preferably formed of angle members;
A decorative molding 4: is secured around the border of the panel, and includes a: bottom capping member 5 and side capping members 6, the latter extending below the panel proper, as at 7. This molding and capping may be formed of wood or sheetmetal, and is secured to the framework 0 the panel in any suitable manner.
Positioned below the panel proper, and extending between the capping extensions 7 I provide a metal lattice, generally designated A, and comprising several lattice sections B. Said lattice sections are preferably formed of sheet metal cut and bent into the shape of lattice work including, as'illustrated, a plurality of vertically extending channel-like portions 8, and spaced apart openings 9 formed in the sheet between the adjacent portions 8. Said openings 9 are formed by stamping out portions of the metal and bending the portions rearwardly of the channel-like portions 8, as at 10.
An important and characteristic feature of the present invention resides in the means for mounting and detachably supporting the sev- Inq members 12 are further formed with flanges 13a extending upwardly and parallel to the member 11, said flanges being provided with slotted openings 14 adapted to receive bolts 15 to secure the hangers to the uprights 3. Sections of angle bar 11a may be welded on the member 11 to space said member from the lfiprights 3 and to provide reinforcing there- The lattice sections B, in addition to the parts above described, each includes longitudinally extending channel-likemembers 16 and 16a, the upper member 16 being, located a slight distance below the upper edge of the lattice body and the lower member 16a being positioned adjacent its lower edge. These members are preferably secured by welding them'to the body or to respective rows of the inwardly projecting fins or portions l0, The channels 16 andg16a are flush with one end of the lattice sections, and extend beyond the other end-thereof, as at 17. Slotted openings 19 are provided adjacent the ends of the channels for a'djustably securing the lattice sections together.
An angle member 18 is welded or otherwise secured to the under side of the upper flange of channel member 16, at a predetermined distance'inwa-rdly from the ends there'- of. Similarly, the channel 16a is provided with an angle member 18a secured to the lower flange thereof. It will be noted, however, that the angle member 18a is offset or out of alignment with the angle member 18. This arrangement is very important as it permits-the-as'semblage of the sections to be made with the least possible trouble, as hereinafter described. The angle members 1'8 and 18a, extend rearw'ardly from their respective channels, and have one flange a thereof spaced away from the channel members a slight amount, as shown in Fig. 3.
In some instances, the said angle members 18' and 18a are formed integral with and exi tend substantially the length of the respective channels 16 and 16a, and are provided with offset openings to function similarly to the offset members 18-and 18a. Thus, in the form of Fig. 7, the channels 16 and 16a are formed with integral opposed flangeslSb and 180 respectively, said flanges extending the length of the channel members. Offset openings 02 an'dy are provided in the flanges 18b and 180 respectively, for receiving the ends 6 and b of a hanger member 11 during the act of assembling.
Itwill be noted that the channel members stiffen the flexible lattice body, thus provid ing a very desirable construction for handl ing these sheet metal sections, and that the said channels and the elements carried thereby cooperate with the hangers C for mounting and securing the lattice sections to the structure.
Several of these clips 20 with their flanges 22 bent outwardly away from the side members 23 are bolted in the upper ends of the vertically extending channel-like portions 8 of'th'e' latitice sections, as indicated at c, said flanges being flush with the tops of said portions, The lattice sections B and the hanger brackets C may be elevated until the flanges 22 engage the under side of the bottom cappingv 5, said movement being permitted by means of the slotted openings 1.4 of the hanger brackets. Screws or bolts 26 are entered into the openings of the clips and secure the lattice to said capping. I have shown a wooden member as one form of capping,- butobviously a metal capping may be used, necessitating rows of slotted openings therein for receiving the bolts 26.
Clips 2O are also secured in the outer ends of the lattice channels 16 and 16a of the end lattice sections, said clips having their flanges 22 bent in the direction of the side members 23, as shown in F 6. Screws or bolts 27 are entered into the openings 25 thereof for securing said end sections to the side capping extensions 7, as particularly shown in Fig. 4.
lVhen the lattice sections have been ele vated and secured to the capping, the sections are securely fastened together by means of bolts and slotted openings 19' in the lattice channels. Also, the bolts 15 of the hanger brackets may befinally tightened to secure said brackets to the uprights 3.
In. assembling the sectional lattice on the structure, assuming that the hangers C have been positioned on the respective uprights 3, one section at a. time is temporarily or loosely positioned by causing the angle members 18 or 180, or their flanges a, to overlap and engage the respective ends Z) and Z) of the vertically extending member 11 of the lattice hanger. The length of the members 18 and 1811; are such as to permit of a lateral or sliding movement of the section, and owing to the offset position of these members relatively to each other, as above described, it will be understood that the upper member 18 will be brought into engagement with the end Z) of member 11 before the member 18a engages the end 6, thus aiding in the assembling by properly guiding the section while it is being slid along.
So, also, in the form of Fig. 7 the opening 00 in the flange 186 permits engagement of the lattice section B or its flange 18?) with the end I) of the hanger 0, whereby the same is suspended and may be moved. laterally, so that the lower end 6 of said hanger may be entered in the opening 3 and the flange 180 engage the end I) of the hanger.
Thus, it will be seen that the entire lattice may be temporarily positioned below the panel proper. By means of the slotted openings 19 of the channels 16 and 16a, the lattice may be stretched to fill the space between the end capping extensions 7.
After the temporary positioning, as above described, the lattice is finally positioned and secured in the final position by means of the clips 20 and their cooperating fastenings.
If desired, a molding or apron D may be secured to the lattice sections B by means of bolts 28 and spacers 29. The apron D preferably extends beyond'one end of the lattice sections for telescoping with adjacent apron portions, as will be readily understood.
I claim:
