UNITE1D- STATES I'TPATENT' OFFICE,
CHILD'S SCHOOL BRIEF CASE Application filed May 5,
T 1e present invention relates to a miniature brief case particularly adapted for children, especially those oing to the lower graded schools, though not necessarily, as older children may find use for this character of article.
One of the purposes of the present invention is to provide a one piece brief case so constructed as to form the opposite sides of the case as well as the flap, thereby producing an article which may be cheaply manufactured, whereby it may be sold at a relatively reasonable and fair profit.
Another purpose is to provide a brief case of this character having a neat and attractive appearance, to some extent simulating more expensive brief cases, in that it has overlying straps, giving the article the appearance that the straps act to retain the flap closed.
Another purpose is to provide a brief case of this kind wherein thehandle has its ends extending through slots formed in the fold of the flap, and riveted to the flap immediately inside of the fold, providing for a foundation for the fold, simulating a stiffening or reinforcing bar used in more expensive brief cases. The reason for extending the ends of the handle through the slots and riveting the ends of the handle strap adjacent the inside of the fold, is that it enables the handle to assert a pulling strain on the Wall of the fold, in a direction from each end of the fold, whereas if the handle should be riveted to the outside of the fold, the rivet would be more liable to tear the material, as the material from which this character of brief case is made possesses relatively small amount of strength.
Still another purpose is to arrange the straps on the exterior of the brief case, riveted to the front wall and extended over the back wall, over the fold and riveted tothe flap, such rivets being in the form of cooperating male and female fasteners, said straps so passing over the fold of the flap and over the rivets for the handle as to obscure the head of the handle rivets and act as abutment means for the fastened ends of the strap.
1930. Serial no. 449,981.
In other words where the straps extend over the ends of the handle, the straps act to resistany tension on the fold of the flap.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Y Figure l-is a view in perspective of the improved brief case constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectionalview on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a View in elevation of the brief case showing the flapopen.
Referring to the drawings, 1 identifies a brief case as a whole, which is constructed from a single piece of material, which may be fgbberized cloth, imitation leather or the 1 re. r
This single piece of leather is folded upon itself at 2, the adjacent edgesat 3 being stitched as shown. However before stitching the material at the adjacent edges, the material is provided with a row of stitches as indicated at 4, 5 and 6, more as a decoration to the brief case. The stitches which secure the adjacent edges of the brief case together are extended around the marginaledge of the flap as shown at 7, as additional decoration to the brief case. Other stitching may be applied elsewhere if found necessary, that is. for the same purpose of ornamentation.
A pair of straps 8 are provided which extend around the case, that is from the front face over the back face and over the fold 9 of the flab 10. The straps 8 are riveted at 11 to the front face of the case, while the other end. portions of the straps are riveted at 12 to the flap adjacent its edge portion. These rivets are in the form of cooperating male and female snap fasteners, and furthermore the extremities of the straps beyond the rivets or female fasteners 12 are extended to overlie the other end portions of the straps to give a neat and attractive appearance at the same time simulate a more expensive briefcase.
A handle 13 is provided, which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably, in this instance, of leather, and the ends of the handle are pass-ed through slots 14 and suitable rivets 15 secure the extremities of the handle to the flap immediately at the fold of the flap, thereby'simulating a foundation construction for the fold, such as is usually caused in more expensive brief cases by means of a stiffening bar.
It is to be noted that in carrying this brief case the pulling action on the handle is in a direction With the fold of the flap from opposite ends of the fold. This construction is 20 g reatly in preference to riveting the ends of the handle 011 the outside face of the fold, due to the fact that the strain Would be more toward the upward direction and possibly rip or'tear the material, as the material is more or less relatively Weak.
In order to reinforce and resist any tearing of the material the straps in passing over the fold are drawn relatively tight and immediately overlie the rivets Which fasten the handle to the fold, the straps performing the function of obscuring the rivetsand resisting the pulling action on the handle. In fact it might be said that the portion of the straps overlying the rivets in the fold act as abutments, allowing the handle to pull against the straps and thereby resist any strain and greatly prevent tearing of the material.
' The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
As an article of manufacture, a miniature brief case constructed from a single blank of imitation leather folded upon itself causing front and rear Walls to be formed, the rear Wall merging into a flap, the fold of Which having slots, a handle with its end portions passing through the slots, rivets fastening the ends of the handle to the inner face of the fold, and straps closely fitting around the case near its opposite ends and 1 ing close against the front and rear Walls, t e ends of the straps being riveted to the front wa-ll and to the exterior of the flap, said rivets comprising cooperating male and female fasteners, the straps adjacent the fold of the flap overlying the fastening means for the ends of the handle and constituting abutments to resist the straining action on the fastening means and the ends of the handle, thereby preventing tearing of the case adjacent the fold of the flap.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
