FUSE PLUG HOLDER Application filed December 27, 1930. Serial No. 505,126.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in supports having special application upon binding posts of electric conductors for the maintenance of a circuit breaker.
Another of the objects of the invention consists of a plug for the circuit breaking device having detachable locking connection with the support.
More specifically stated the support and plug provide a yieldable contact support for the circuit breaking device.
As heretofore experienced in the operation of motor vehicles of certain types unequipped with circuit breaking devices, ignition and other wiring is frequently out of commission.
The present invention is designed to overcome these ditliculties by the provision and arrangement of a suitable form of inexpensive circuit breaking device at the starter switch between the usual battery terminal and the wire connected therewith at the starter switch from the ammeter within convenient reach.
the invention.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail where in like characters of reference denote correspending parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally an approprlate portion of a motor vehicle fly-wheel housing, 11 the starting motor, 12 the starting switch, 13 the throttle rod for operating the switch and 14 the terminal wire leading from the positive post of the motor vehicle storage battery, not shown, and having connection at its opposite end with the binding post 15 upon the starter switch 12; all of the above is old and usual in the art and forms no part of the present application for Letters Patent but are merely mentioned for purposes of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages of the present invention.
T he invention primarily resides in the provision and arrangement of an elongated cross section channel shaped attaching plate 16 having an opening 17 in the bottom wall thereof to accommodate the shank of the binding post of the starter switch 12 in the manner suggested in Figure 1 of the drawings. The side flanges of the elongated channeled supporting plate are designed to engage the immediate facets of a locking or jam nut, not shown, carried upon the binding post 15 immediately adjacent the outer wall of the starter switch housing whereby the supporting plate will be held against lateral displacement.
A tubular extension 18, carried by and horizontally disposed upon the uppermost projecting end of the channeled supporting plate, is disposed upon that side thereof in diametrically opposed relation to the channel, substantially as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
A dielectric plug 19 having a longitudinal axially aligned bore 20 is removably positioned within the tubular extension 18 through a conventional form of bayonet slot connection. A cup-shaped member 21, also having pin and bayonet slot connection with the plug 19 in oppositely disposed relation to that of the tubular extension 18, carries a boss 22 upon the closed end wall 23 thereof and within which the innermost end of a binding post 24 is threadedly secured. A lead wire 25 from the motor vehicle ammeter, not
shown, is to be secured in electrical connection with the cup-shaped member 21 through the employment of the binding post 2A.
The circuit breaking device, to be employed in conjunction with the form of supporting apparatus described and illustrated in the foregoing, may be in the nature of the ordinary fuse consisting of a fusible element connected terminally with end caps, the latter being held apart by a transparent tube. The fusible element in its entirety is disposed within the bore of the dielectric plug 19 for contacting engagement at one end with the wall 23 of the cup-shaped member 21. A plunger form of contact 25 yieldably retained in position for use by a compression spring 26 yieldably retained in position for use by a compression spring 26 regulated as to tension by an adjusting element '27 is completely housed within a sleeve 28 carried by the bottom wall of the channelshaped supporting plate 16 and projecting within the bore of the plug. The 'contact'25 is disposed for abutting engagement .with the adjacent end cap of the fusible element or circuit breaker.
From the foregoing it will be noted that vehicles equipped with this particular form of circuit breaker will be less susceptible to the fire hazard, due to short circuits in the wiring thereof In instances where short circuits do occur, the circuit breaker or fusible element will blow or melt to break the circuit at that particular point instead of burning the wires. Burned, melted or blown fuses may be readily removed and replaced by disconnecting or dismantling the support at the pin and bayonet slot connections.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having, described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described a supporting plate of channel formation having special application upon binding posts, a tubular extension carried by the plate, a dielectric plug of hollow formation having detachable locking connection with the tubular extension, a circuit breaker housed within the bore of the plug, a cap member carried upon the opposite end of the plug having contacting engagement with the adjacent end of the circuit breaker, a binding post for the cupshaped member in electrical connection with the circuit breaker, and a yieldably supported contact carried by the plate having electrical connection with the other end of the circuit breaker.
2 1 fuse plug support comprising a con.- ductive plate, a tubular extension carried thereby and having a concentric spring seat,
tures.
