Description
March 29, 1932. w. J. WOOLLEY VALVE FOR WATERv CLOSETS Filed Au 2', 1929 Patented il/l ar. 29; 1932 V WILLIAM J. ,wooLLEY, OECHICAGOQ ILLINOIS VALVE r03 WATER cLosErs Application filed August 2,
This invention relates in general to valves, and has more particular reference to flush valves for water closet tanks. I
A principal object of this invention is to U provide a flush valve of awater closet tank with a plunger which makes a water-tight joint with the valve seat when the valve is closed.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a'flush valve of a water closet tank witha plunger which has aportion of leather, .or other treated fibrous material adapted to seal the valve port when the valve is closed. 7
Another important'object of the invention is to provide a flush valve of awater closet tank with a plunger having a portion of leather, rubber, or other treated fibrous material which is reinforced to protect the leather or rubber against-excessive packingand radial expansion of the plunger when the valve is operated, thereby causing leakage through the valve. 1 Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a flush valve ofa water closet with a plunger which is elficient and reliable in operation and which is simple and durable in construction- I f Numerous other ObJQCtS and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description,
whichgvhen taken in connection with the accoinpanyin g drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is'an elevation of a water closet tank embodying the invention; and c Fig; 2 is a vertical section taken through the valve shown in Fig. 1.
For thepurpose of illustrating the invention the drawingsshowa usual water closet tank 11 provided with a feed pipe 12 adapted V to be connected on'one end to a suitable water supply, to extend into the tank and to cornmunicate with asuitable feed control valve (not shown). A vertically disposed overflow pipe 13 is inountedin a bracket seat 14: which communicates with the'pipe l3 andwith a flushvalve bodylacast at one end offthe,
f bracket. Thevalve body l5 is cast to seat 1929. seiiainu. 382,950,
on thGbOttOlH'Of thetankll, in spaced relation with the "bracket seat 14 0f the overflow pipe'lifi, and provides" a ineansifor draining the -tank"ll.y The valve body 15 isprovided with a valve seat 16 which surrounds a port' communicatingat its lower end witha waste pipe 17 having suitable pipe connections to the bowl of the water closet.
' The body of the valve plunger 18 is formed 'o fronia suitable inaterialys'uch as hard rub- I her, to provide a head-23 having'its upper portion dome-shaped and having a boss 24:
formed substantially centrally of the domeis shaped-portion and threaded as at 19 to receive the lower end-offithe stem 21'. The head 23 has substantially vertical sides 24 depending-from the dome portion and is pro vided near the lower end ofthe head with an inwardly extendingflange 25 and with a I depending flange or edge portion 30 extend-- mg below the flange 25 as a prolongation of the sides-2tl The inwardly extending flange 25 provides a shoulder adjacent a vertically disposed skirt 26 which depends from the interior portion of the inwardly extending flange 25. The skirt 26 has an externally threaded portion' 27 at its lower end to re- I ceive a cap' 28 having interior threads 29 whichco-operate with the threads 27 on the skirt 26 to hold the cap '28 on the end ofthe skirt 26. The closed endof the cap 28 extends below the threaded end of'the skirt'26 i asrshownin'Fig12, and is formed substan' tially as an inverted dome, the cap being adapted to be received through the valveseat 16 when the valve is closed. f
The cap 28 is provided to hold a collar 131 of leatheryr ubberr or 'other suitable fibrous material on the skirt portion against the finwardlyextending flange'25 0f the head 23 and between the skirt portion and the depending flange 30. The collar 31 is constructed of any suitable fibrous material, such as a suitably treated felt, rubber, or leather 5 for valve packing, and is arranged to embrace the skirt portion 26 for the purpose of sealing, the valve port by fitting the vseat.16 of the valve 15 so that the cap 28 depends'into the valve port. A metal washer 32 havinga I plurality of upstanding projections or teeth 33 around its periphery is of slightly' large!" diameter than the cap 28 and is adapted to embrace the skirt 26 between the cap 28 and the fibre collar 31, so that the teeth 33 are in engagement with the fibre collar. The
2 flange to prevent excessive radial expansion due to packing in the operation of the valve.
In operation the plunger 18 is raised by rotating the handle 22 to open the valve-15 stood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may 40 be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventionor sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely av preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A valve plunger for flush valves of water closet tanks, comprising a body havinguan 5 enlarged head and a skirt depending there-v end'of said skirt, a fibre collar arrangedto embrace said skirt between said head and said cap forsealing the valve port, and -re-- inforcing means arranged to embrace said skirt adjacent said cap to preventleakage around said collar due to packing andradial. expansion in the operation of the valve, said means being adapted to frictionally engage:
said collar.
an enlarged head and a skirt depending therefrom, a cap adapted'to threadably engage the. end of said skirt, a fibre collar arrangedto. embraoeisaid skirt between isaidyhead' and;
and to flush the water closet, which opens the feed control valve in a usual manner and. permits refilling of the tank through the feed from, a cap adapted to threadably engageithe 2. A valve plunger for fiushvalves .of was ter closet tanks, comprising a body having said cap for sealing the valve port, and a metal washer arranged to embrace said skirt adjacent said cap and having a plurality of teeth arranged to project upwardly and to engage the fibre collar to'prevent leakage around said collar due to packing and radial expansion in the operation of the valve.
WM. J. WOQLLEY.
