THE smpmc corix 1) STATESPATEN'I OFFICE.
ALLEN S. BAKER, OF EVANSVILLE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,063, dated December 5, 1876 application filed June 13, 1876. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN S. BAKER, of Evansville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to the means for attaching the brace to a pump-standard so that the brace can be secured at any point to the standard or placed in any position relative to the spout, and the set-screw heretofore used for securing the brace to the standard done away with. My invention therein consists in the construction of the standard at the point where the brace is joined to the same, and in the construction-of the end of the brace, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to manufacture my device, I now describe the same in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pump. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the pump-standard and the end of the brace at the point of connection and Fig. 3 is a separate view of the upper end of the brace.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in each figure.
A represents the standard of a pump, circular in form, of the kind which is secured by a base, a, to a platform or flooring in yards, stables, or other places. B is the top. These pumps are provided with a brace, G, which is secured to the standard at its upper end below the spout, and to the platform at its lower end in the line of the handle, to relieve the strain upon the base. The pump-standard is cast with a downwardly-projecting circular flange, b, so as to form an upwardly-entering.
groove, 12. Below the groove on the standard 7 The upper end of v is cast a projecting ring, 0. the brace O is constructed with a groove, d, which fits over'the ring 0011 the standard, and an upwardly-turned end, d, which enters the groove b.
The upper end of the brace may be moved around the pump standard to any desired point, and the lower end secured to the platform. This is especially advantageous in pumps having the top B adapted to be revolved, in which case the brace ought .to be moved into the line of thehandle, to relieve the strain.
The construction of the standard and the brace make a cheap and efficient device, and the parts are held together securely without the set-screw now used.
Having thus fully described my device, and explained some of its advantages, what-I'claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. The combination, with the pump-standard A, of a brace, held at its upper end to the said standard only by the spring of the brace, and adapted to be removed from the standard or adjusted to any point around the same by disconnecting its lower end from the platform, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The standard A, having the groove 1) and ring 0, and the brace 0, having the groove (1 and end d, when the several parts are constructed, arranged, and combined substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this 13th day of April, 1876.
ALLEN .S. BAKER.
