In the present instance this tool carrier is designated 22 and is preferably mounted on the base 18 for movement in a horizontal plane so that the tool holders 21 carried thereby will be moved in a plane which is radial with respect to all of the grinding elements 12.
In oider that the dressing tools maybe fed across the cutting elements and caused to dress the same at a uniform feeding speed a mounting is provided for the carrier 22 which practically eliminates all static frictional resistance of the carrier 22 on its support. The provision of such means serves substantially to eliminate the jerking or uneven feeding of the carrier which would result from the application of a relatively large force to overcome the static frictional resistance of the device when moving the carrier at a slow rate. To this end the carrier 22, which is of substantially rectangular fform, is shown mounted upon bearings formed by a plurality of balls 25 (Fig. 1) positioned in upwardly extending recesses 26 formed inthe bottom of the carrier 22, the balls 25 being of smaller diameter than the recess 26 and adapted to roll between a pair of parallel hard steel plates 27, 27 a (Fig. ,4) mounted on the top of the base V18 and in the recesses 26 respectively. The carrier is guided in its movement to conform with the shape desired upon the grinding elements as described hereinafter. Y Y
The tool holders 21 are preferably mounted adjustably upon the carrier 22 in properly spaced relation and mechanism provided for adjusting the holders simultaneously and for locking the holders inV their adjusted positions. Thus, as illustrated in the drawings the carrier 22 is recessed along its upper edge adjacent the arbor 11 so as to provide a fiat horizontal surface or ledge 30 extending across the carrier upon which the tool holders 21 may rest. The ends of the tool holders project beyond the forward edge of the carrier 22 and are herein illustrated as equipped with dressing tools or diamonds 31 for dressing the wheels 12 to form.
For the purpose of securing the tool holders 21 in position on the carrier 22, so that the tools 31 may be adj usted laterally of the grinding elements, the holders are pivotally mounted intermediate their endsV on a plurality of vertical pivot pins or bolts 37 which are spaced apart equally with the elements 12 to be dressed. A bar 35 (Fig. 2) is placed above the tools and extending along the front edge of the carrierv and provided with a plurality of vertical bores BG formed therein at intervals equal to the desired distance between the dressing points 31.
The bolts 37 extend downwardly through the bores 36, through bores 39 formed in each tooth holder 21 intermediate its ends, and into engagement with the body `of the carrier.
Thus the tool holders are movably secured to the carrier sothat the tools may be adjusted laterally of the carrier in a horizontal plane. When the carrier 22 is to be used to hold a less number of tool holders 21 than the number for which it was designed, a plurality of dummy tool holders 2la may be provided through vertical bores 42 in the bar 35 in front and in back of the pivot bolts 37 and into contact with the pressure plate immediately above the holders and which are adapted to be pressed downwardly by screws 43 mounted v in a cover plate 44 which extends over the bar 35.
The holders are preferably arranged so that normally the tools will be urged yieldingly toward the grinding elements when the e pressure plate is released. Thus the tools 31 may be adjusted by means of a template 47 as illustrated in Fig. 6, which template is provided with properly spaced gage surfaces 48, one for each tool and has dow-el pins 47 arranged to lit into holes 4T? on the carrier to rposition the template accurately thereon.

and thus to cooperate with the template in adjusting the tool holders, a plurality of resilient rods or springs 60 are arranged to engage the rear ends of the tool holders. In the preferred form illustrated herein these rods are mounted within the body of the carrier 22 on a bar 50 which extends along and is slidable transversely of the rear ends of the tool holders 21 and is arranged to be operated from the exterior of the carrier for the purpose of adjusting simultaneously the tension of the springl rods. The bar 50 is mounted in a. groove 51 formed in the face of a member 52 which is positioned to the rear of the bar 85.
In the exemplary form of the invention the resilient rods are secured at one end to the front face of the bar 50 and with 'their 'free ends extending downwardly therefrom into contact with knife edges 61 formed on one side of the rear ends of the tool holders 21. The rods 6() are herein mounted on the bar 50 by means of bolts 62 which extend through suitable bores formed in the bar 50 and to the heads of which the rods are suitably anchored. To permit of such adjustment asquare headed screw member is 'threaded into the end ofthe bar 50: andis fixed against longitudinal movement by a collar 56 rthereon which is positioned between an end-plate 57 and the endsof the members 35 and 52. The

kThe tool carrier 22,. as mentioned hereinbefore, is movably mounted on the'base 18 by means of the -balls 251which practically eliminate static friction of the :carrier on the base. It is contemplated that `equallyfrictionless means will be -provided to actuate and control theA carrier to move the tools through the desired-.path so` as to dress they ,grindingelementsf12 accurately to the desired contour. Therpresentem'bodiment of the invention contemplates the actuation andY movement of the'carrier in 'twodirections which are at right angles tov each other and the control of such'movement in they two directions by two separate means inter-related so as definitely `to determine `the relative amounts of movement inthe twor directions and thereby'controlithe resultant path of the 1 f carrier.
The actuating m'eans for the carrier 22 preferably embodies yieldable' means which normally. tends to retract the` carrier from operative engagement ywith the grinding elements 12 and also meansfor positively moving the carrier into such operative engagement and against vsaid yieldable means. Thus -as illustratedv herein a'retractile coil spring 70 is secured at one end to the cariier'22 and extends rearwardly diagonally of the base 18 Fig. 2). and is secured atthe other vend to anupstanding rear wall 71 which is secured along the top rear edge of thebase 18v as by means of screws 72. The means for moving the carrierf22uto toward the grinding elements 12 preferably embodies rolling contacts. and the front faces of the carriage 75. These taper gibs 82 may beprovided with suitable adjusting screw devices 83. Thus thecam carriage is arranged for movementalongan accurate, unvaryingpath transverselyof' the base 18.
The cam blocks 85 and 86 are securedlfto the cam carriage 75 and tool carrier 22 respectively by meansof screws `88 so as to be readily hremovable therefrom. To provide a greater range of transverse carrier movement and the use of a simpler form of grooved control cam when it is desired to dress the grinding elements to more complex contours, the cam block 91 is preferably mounted for movement longitudinally ranged to provide a rolling abutment for the slide 91-, Preferably hardened steel plates 102 areisecur-ed to the slide to engage the balls l The slide 91a is normally urged longitudinally along and against the side wall by means of a diagonally positioned contractile.
coil spring 98, the ends of which are fastened to the slide 91a and thevvall 95 respectively (Fig. 1). A laterally extending portion 103 of the wall is preferably a ranged so as to project over the top of the slide 91 to guide the slide in its sliding movement on the base 18.
At the rear end of the slide 91aa roller 105 is mounted upon a vertical pin 106 in position to engage and roll upon a cam surface 107 formed upon a block 108 which is mounted on the cam carriage 75. Thus when the cam carriage is moved transversely of the base 18, the cam surface 93 will be moved longitudinally of the base in accordance with the contour of the cam surface 107 and the amount of movement of the cam carriage and will thus serve to vary the movement of theA carrier 22 which would ordinarily be caused bythe cam 93.
This arrangement makes possible the use of more simple and economically formed cams for guiding the tools than would be permissible to produce complicated movements of the tool carriage if but a single control cam were used.
Any suitable means may be provided -for conveniently actuating the cam carriage 75 back and fo-rth across the base. As herein illustrated this means comprises a link 110 -which is pivotally connected at one end to the front face of the cam carriage 75 by a bolt 111 (Fig. 5) and at the other end to a crank arm 112 by a pivot pin 113. VThe crank arm 112 is preferably fixed upon a rock shaft i which is in turn rotatably mounted on the table 10, any preferred manual or power means (not shown) being used to rock 'the shaft 114 and thus reciprocate the cam carriage 75. e
Thus when it is desired to dress a plurality of grinding elements 12, the tool holders may be readily and accurately adj Listed by reason of the resilient pressure means embodied in the carrier for urging the holders into engagement with a template of simple form, and the holders may then be secured in their adjusted positions by means which is accessible exteriorly of the carrier. The entire dressing device may then be moved bodily along the Ways 17 into proximity to the grinding elements, in which position the carrier 22 and the dressing tools thereon may be moved back and forth along the desired path by reciprocating the cam carriage 75. Since rolling contacts are provided between the carrier and its supporting and actuating means, the static friction of the movable carrier on its support is reduced to a minimum and the movement of the carrier may be readily accomplished at a uniform feeding speed. The provision of the cam 107 for varying the effe-ctiveness of the cam 93, serves to simplify the other cams when it is desired to give a complicated movement to the dressing tools 31.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that `the invention provides means whereby a plurality of dressing tools may be easily actuated and their path of movement accurately controlled so as to dress a plurality of grinding elements to a predetermined contour,
lt will also be apparent that the invention provides novel means for readily securing an accurate adjustment of the dressing tools in the tool carrier together with an eilective clamping means for securing the tool holders in their adjusted positions.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a base having upstanding side and rear walls, a tool carrier movably mounted on said base adjacent said vvalls, a cam carriage mounted on said base for movement transversely of said base along said rear Wall, cam means on said carriage arranged when said carriage is moved in one direction to engage and move said carrier longitudinally of said base, spring means connecting said carrier and said rear wall operable to oppose such movement of the carrier, a control slide mounted adjacent said side wall for movement longitudinally of said base along said wall, cam means on said slide engaging said carrier and operable to control the transverse movement of said carrier according to the relative longitudinal movement of said slide and said carrier, spring means connecting said slide and said slee wall, and cam means on said cam carriage arranged to cooperate with said spring to actuate and controlthe movement of said slide LEU grinding element, a tool carrier movably mounted on said base, a dressing tool mounted on said carrier, and means for actuating and controlling the movement of said Vcarrier to move said dressing tool to dress a grinding element to the desired contour, said means comprising a cam device mounted on the base for reciprocation transversely thereof and arranged when moved in one direction to actuate and move said carrier longitudinally of said base, spring means operable to oppose such movement of the carrier and to return said carrier when the cam device is moved in an opposite direction, and a second cam device mounted on said base to engage said carrier and to cooperate with said spring means to control transverse movement of said carrier.
3. In a device of the class described, a base, a tool carrier movably mounted thereon, a cam carriage mounted for reciprocatory movement transversely of said base adjacent said carrier, cam means on said cam carriage engaging the carrier so as to cause movement of said carrier longitudinally of said base when said cani carriage is moved along its path, and means operable to control the transverse movement of said carrier according to its longitudinal movement on said base.
4. A device of the character described, comprising in combination, a base, a tool carrier movably mounted thereon, means for reciprocating said carrier longitudinally of said base, a cam slide mounted on said base engaging said cariier and operable during said longitudinal movement to govern transverse movement of said carrier on said base, and a second means operable by said first means to control the position of said cam slide whereby to control tlie effectiveness of said cam slide.
5. A dressing device for grinding elements comprising a base, a dressing tool, a tool carrier therefor mounted on said base for limited planar movement thereon, a cam movable in one direction to impart movement to said carrier in a direction at an angle to the direction of movement of said cam, a second cam surface mounted on the base engaging said carrier and operable when said carrier ismoved by said first cam to permit movement of said carrier in a direction parallel to the path of movement of said first cam.
6. A tool support comprising, in combination, a base, a tool, a tool carrier therefor, means to actuate and control the movement of said carrier in one direction, a second means for controlling movement of said carrier in a second direction angularly disposed with respect to said first direction according tothe movement of said carrier in said first direction, and a third means associated with said first mentioned means for varying the controlling effect of said second mentioned means.
7 Ina device for adj ustably holding a plurality of tools, a body, a plurality of tools pivotally mounted thereon, a bar slidably mounted on said body adjacent said tools, a
plurality of resilient members mounted on said bar, one engaging each of said tools to impart a yielding rotative force thereto, and means for longitudinally moving said bar whereby to vary said yielding force. n 8. The combination of a plurality of dressing tool holders having dressing points mounted near one end, a part to which each f of the tools is pivoted, said tools being adapted to be adjusted by means of a template having a plurality of gage surfaces to engage said dressing points so as to properly space the same, means for securing said tools in adjusted position, a member mounted on said part for adjustment relative thereto, and a plurality of spring devices mounted on said member and engaging said dressing tools whereby said tools may be moved about their respective pivots and the dressing points irmly held in contact with said gage surfaces while the tools are being secured in their adjusted positions.
9. A device for dressing the peripheral edge of a rotating grinding velement to a given contour, said device comprising a stationary base adapted to be mounted adjacent such a grinding element, a carrier member movably mounted on said base, a dressing tool mounted on said carrier member, and means for Vactuating and controlling movement of said carrier member to move said dressing tool to dress a grinding element to the desired contour, said means comprising a cam member mounted on the base for reciprocation transversely thereof and arranged when moved in one direction to actuate and move said carrier member longitudinally of said base, spring means operable to oppose such movement ofk the carrier lmember and to return the carrier member when the cam member is moved inV an opposite direction, a second cam device mounted on said base to engage said carrier member and to cooperate with said spring means to control transverse movement of said carrier member, and means acting between said second cam device and one of said menibers operable by movement of said last menof said vsecond cam device.
