This invention aims to provide a heaterwhich, at the will of an operator, may be used as a fireplace or as a closed-in stove.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the pres- 'ent invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds,
the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The device forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of metal throughout. It comprises a box-like body 1. The body 1 includes a bottom 2 which may be carried on a frame 8 supported by legsfl t. The body 1 includes a back 5 and side 6, together with a top 7, the top 7 preferably being imperforate. Channels C, formed by the sides 6, by inwardly bent front portions 6a, and by rearwardly bent portions 8, are located at the front of the body 1 and, in elevation, may be of the triangular form depicted in Figure 3, to give more space in the body 1. In the portions 8 of the channels C there are guide grooves 9 in which a door 10 is vertically slidable, the door 10 being provided with a handle 11 by which it may be conveniently manipulated. The back 5 of the body 1 carries a nipple 12 on which a stove pipe 14 is mounted.
The body 1 carries, for vertical sliding movementya casing 15, the casing 15 being closed at the sides and at thefront. The casing 15 is closed at'the'back, also, saving for an opening 19 in its lower edge.' Thegopenmg receives the stove pipe or outlet'12, and permits the casing 15 tobe raised and lowered w1th respect to the stove pipe. In the top of thecasi'ng'15 there is a large hole 17 covered by a screen 18. Any desired number of 1 anti-friction devices, such as rollers 16 are 60 mounted on the body 1, near to the corners "thereofft-he rollers 16 cooperating with the casing 15 tofacilitate the vertical movement of the casing. Any suitable means may be supplied for holding th casing 15' raised. If '05 desired, a latch 20 may-be pivotally connected at one end, as shown at 21;, to the back of the casing 15. The latch 20 is supplied near to its lower end witha'handle 22fand nearto its lower end the latch 20 has an inwardly extended proj ection 23 which engages the easing 15 along one edge of the opening 19. It will be obviousthat when the latch 20'is in the position shown in Figure '5 of the drawings,,the' latch will cooperate with the'stove -7 pipe 14, to hold the casing1-5 against downward movement from the positions shown in Figures 3) and 1. The latch 20, has somere- 'siliency, or there may be a little loosehess at the pivot element 21, the showing of the 3 drawings being the same in either case. This permits the operator to take hold of the handle 22151 101, move the latch 20 in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 6 until the pro- F jection 28 is disengaged from the opening 19 in the back of the casing 15. Then the casing 15 can slide downwardly the latch 20 swinging upwardly inthe direction of the arrow B in Figure 5. o
If the operator wishes to have a. fireplace .efi'ect, he keeps the casing 15 raised, as in Figure 8, theopening 17 permitting heated air to rise from the top 7 of the body 1 of the heater. If, however, the operator desires to have a stove effect, then he can disengage the latch 20 from the stove pipe 14, as hereinbefore explained, and let the casing 15 slide down until it rests on the handle 11, and then the body 1 of the heater will be p closed at the front, and all about its periphery, as well, the eifect of a stove being produced. After the fire is well started, the casing 16 can be lowered, and the device will function after the manner of the well-known air tight stove, although if a draft is desired the skill of a mechanic can be relied upon to provide a means to that end.
The door '10 prevents the ashes from working their way out of the front of the body 1, but the operator can raise the door 10 by means of the handle 11 and shovel out the ashes if he wishes to do so.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is simple but it affords a convenient means whereby an operator, at will,
can have either an open fireplace or a box .stove.
Having thus is claimed is:
v 1. In a device of the class described, a boxlike body having a movable door in its front, there being an opening in the front of the body, above the door, a casing slidable on described the invention, what the body and constituting a closure for the opening when the casing is lowered, and
means for holding the casing elevated.
2. In a device of the class described, a boxlike body having an opening, and a casing slidable on the body to open and close the opening, the casing having an aperture in its top and a screen extended across the aperture and mounted on the casing.
3. In a device of the class described, a box- .like body having an opening, the body being provided with an outlet member, a casing slidable on the body and constituting a closure for the opening when the casing is lowered, thejcasing having an opening receiving the outlet member and permitting the casing to be raised and lowered, and means for holding the casing elevated, said means embodying a latch engaging the outlet member, one end of the latch being pivoted to the casing, and the other end of the latch engaging the casing within the last specified open- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
