QUICK, OF TAFT, CALIFORNIA QUICK AUTOMATIC ESCAPE Application filed February 25, 1930. Serial No. 431,266..
This invention relates to an escape device for use upon oil well derricks. It has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient means through the medium of which a man trapped upon the derrick, either by the gush of oil, when a well blows in, and which oil may or may not catch fire, or by fire from any other sources, may easily and quickly escape.
The device of the present invention not only conducts the man safelyto the ground, but conducts him in a lateral direction, away from the derrick, and out of the range of the fire or oil.
The Figs. 1 and 2, shown in the accompanying drawings, are diagrammatic views illustrating the position of the parts before and after use, respectively.
In the drawings, 5 designates an oil well derrick, and 6 the usual guy wires, by which the derrick is secured against overturning, under the influence of high winds, or otherwise. I utilize these guy wires as the trackways for the escape device, hereinafter referred to as the fire escape, though it is to be understood that it has for its object to en able a man to escape quickly from any danger which develops upon the derrick. Disposed upon one of the guy wires 6 is a travelling trolley or pulley 7, which carries a weight box 8. A cable 9, attached to this trol-' ley, passes over a fixed pulley 10, at the head or upper portion of the derrick. The op 0- site end of the cable 9 is attached to the hanger of a trolley 11, that is mounted to travel upon the opposed guy wire 6 A relatively short cable, depending from the trolley 11, and indicated at 12, carries a plurality of rings 13, that are adapted to be engaged by a suitable snap hook (not shown) upon the life belt of the workman on the tower. These towers usually comprise a plurality of platforms, indicated at 1 1-1 12 and it will be observed that the rings 13 hang in such manner as to be easily accessible to a man on any of the platforms. A third cable 15 is attached to the trolley 11, and asses over a pulley 16, then over a pulley 1 and carries at its free end an auxiliary weight 18. When confronted by danger, the Workman snaps his life belt into engagement with any one of the rings 13,
and jumps away from the derrick. His weight is suflicient to over-balance the weight 8, and he travels with the trolley 11, down the guy wire o toward the ground, and away from the derrick. As he approaches the ground, the angles are 'suchthat the cable 15 begins to take up and bring the auxiliary weight 18 into play, thereby additionally checking the descent, and rendering it'possible for an easy landing to be effected.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a derrick and its opposed guy wires, of an element travelling upon one of said guy wires, adapted to support the weight of a man, a counter-balancing weight travelling along the other of said guy Wires, a flexible connection between said element and weight, an auxiliary weight and means for bringing said auxiliary weight into action after the first-named weight has moved to a predetermined degree.
2. The combination with a derrick and its opposed guywires, of a trolley travelling upon one of said guy wires, a weight travelling upon the other of said guy wires, a fixed pulley upon the derrick, a cable connecting said trolley and said weight and passing over said pulley, and means adapted to support a workman depending from the trolley and lying in accessibility to the several platforms of the tower.
3. The combination with a derrick and its opposed guy wires, of a trolley travelling upon one of said guy wires, a weight travelling upon the other of said guy wires, a fixed pulley upon the derrick, a cable connecting said trolley and said weight and passing over said pulley, an auxiliary weight and connections between the auxiliary weight and the trolley, through which said auxiliary weight is brought into action after the trolley has moved to a predetermined degree.
at. A device of the character described, comprising a derrick, a pulley at the head thereof, a cable passing over said pulley, a trolley travelling upon one of the guy wires of the derrick to which one end of said pulley is attached, a weight supported by said trolley, a second trolley mounted upon an opposed guy wire of the derrick to which the other end of said cable is attached, an element de pending from the last named trolley and extending past a plurality of theplatformsof the derrick, and provided withv means adapt: ed to be engaged by a life belt.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a derrick, a pulley at the headthereof, a cable passing over said pulley, a trolley travelling upon one of'the guy Wires of the derrick to which oneend of said. pulley is attached, a weight supported by said trolley, a second trolley mounted upon an opposed guy Wire of the derrick to which the other end of said cable is attached, anelement dependingfromi the last named trolley and extending past a plurality of the platforms of the derrick, and provided with means adapted to be engaged by a life belt, a second cable attached to the second named trolley, and a weight connected to the end of said cable, and
interposed guide pulleys over which the cable passes, as and for the purposes-set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DANIEL E. QUICK.
