CABLEWAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. so, 1913.
Application filedFebruary 12, 1912. Serial No. 677,181.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERVIN D. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Ridge, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cableways, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cableways, and more particularly to means for adjusting and maintaining the proper deflection of the main cable of a cableway, one of its objects being to provide means whereby the cable may be readily and quickly adjusted without stopping the operation of the cableway, and without disturbing the supporting means or connections for the main cable or other ropes ofthe cableway.
The invention consists in the construction and improvements to be fully described hereinafter, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
1 have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one embodiment of the invention associated with a portable cableway apparatus; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of another embodiment of the same invention applied to a portable apparatus; Fig.3 is a similar view of another embodiment of the same invention.
Referring to thedrawings by characters of reference, and particularly to Fig. 1: before describing my invention I desire to state that the same is not to be limited to any particular type of cableway, or to a cableway employed for any particular purpose, although I contemplate using it in connection with a cableway for logging, in which connection it is hereinafter described. 1 designates the base or platform of a portable power apparatus of a logging system, which may travel on wheels 2, and upon. which platform is supported a vertical head tower 3 for supporting one end of a cableway, the construction of, and the manner of supporting this tower being immaterial so far as my present invention is concerned, although it may be connected at its base to the platform by a ball and socket connection 1, and be held erect by guys 5. Mounted on the platform may be a hoisting engine E including drums 6, 7 and 8 for rope guides shown for the purposes of this application as' consisting of sets of sheaves 15, 15, and 16, 16, there being two in each set, and spaced vertically from each other, and over the upper faces of thesheaves 15, 15 of the upper set passes the main cable 17 of the cableway, said cable having an extension 17 extending in rear of the tower 3, and passed around a block 18 connected to a split or walking anchorage comprising spreader lines 19, at the point of union of said lines, the opposite ends of which may be anchored to stumps or stakes, not shown. From the block 18 the main cable extension is doubled upon itself and carried over the lower set of pulleys 16, 16, on the head tower,
whence said rope extends down the tower over tensioning and guide sheaves 20, 21,
and under a block sheave 22, from which point it extends to and is wound on the drum 23 of a winding engine E. By this arrangement of the main cable, the position of the latter may be adjusted at anytime to the proper catenary, and any sag which may occur while the cableway is being operated, may be conveniently and quickly taken up by winding the main cable on the drum 23.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, substantially the same arrangement is shown as in Fig. 1, except, however, the lower set of sheaves 16, 16, are omitted and a block 24 substituted therefor, and a block 25 is employed instead of the sheaves 20, 21., 22, the cable passin over said block 2 1, thence down through t e block 25 to the drum of the winding engine. The operation of this form is the same as that of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated an embodiment in which the head tower is not carried upon the platform 1, but may consist of a tree,
stump, or separate tower 26, off the platpasses. From the sheave 30, the main cable extends down the head tree and over a blockor sheave 32, at thebase ofsaid head tree,
a winding drum for operating on said main cable.
2. In a cableway, an elevated. support, a
cable, an anchorage, a rope guide on the anchoragev over which the cable passes, a rope guide atthe base of the support over which the cable passes from the, first-named guide, a winding drum for. the cable, and 25 means for supporting the cablev on the, said support.
3. In a cableway, an elevated support, an anchorage, a rope guide on the anchorage, a cable passing over the support and said guide and doubled upon itself, a second guide onthe support at the head portion thereof, a guide atthe basethereof, the return portion of the cable-passing over said guides, and a Winding drum for the cable. 4. In a cableway,.,.an elevated support, a cable, a split anchorage, a rope gulde on the anchorage over which the cable passes,
a rope guide on the support below said first-named gulde and over which the cable passes from said first-named guide, wlnd- .ing means for the cable, and means for supporting the cable on the said support. 5. In a cableway, an elevated support, a
cable, an. anchorage, a ropeguideon the anchorage, upper and, lower rope guides on the support, a cable. passing over one of .said last-named guides, looped about the guide onthe anchorage and then over the other of the guideson the support and winding means for said cable. V I V 6. In a, cableway, pan elevated support, a cable, an anchorage, a, sheave connected to the anchorage, rope guide on the support,
. said cable passing over said guide and about said sheave, and a winding drum upon which the cable isv Wound. I V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in. the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v V s V ERVIN D. SIVAN.
