This invention relates to feeding mechanisms, and more particularly to a mechanism for feeding cover papers to a magazine press.
Itis an object of the invention to provide a mechanism for feeding cover papers to the folding and associating mechanism of a magazine press5 the coversbeing fed in the form of a continuous web from a rewound roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism for cover papers With means for changing the speed of the feeder so that a predetermined desired number of'covers may be simultaneouslyfed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for varying the speed of a feeding mechanism of the character set forth soas to assure registry with the printing and folding mechanism. i

In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a practical embodiment of my invention; but it is to be understood that the drawings are illustrative merely and that the invention is not confined to the details of construction therein disclosed. As willbe apparent to those skilled in the art, the invention is susceptible of a wide range of modification and equivalency without sacrificing any of its salient features or departing from its scope, as defined in the appended claims.

The feeding mechanism of my invention is in the form of an attachment which may be associated withany knowntype of printing press, and for this purpose the mechanism includes a framework 1, which maybe a part of the frame of the printing press ormay be separately constructed and connected .to the frame of the printing press. The frame is provided with bearings 2, 2, inwhich is journaled a drive shaft 3 which is provided with a beveled gear 4 adapted to receive its motion from any convenient source, as from the shaft 5 having a beveled gear 6 meshed with the geari. Upon the shaft. 3 is mounted a conical pulley 7 about which is trained a belt, 8 which operates a similar conical pulley 9 on a shaft 10.
Suitably journaled in the frame 1 are feed rolls 11 and 12 and a pair of guiderolls 13 and 14. The feed rolls 11 and 12 are provided with intermeshing gears 15 and 16 by which they are rotated in opposite directions. The upper roll 12 of the pair of feed rolls is mounted in bearings 17, 17 in which are housed springs (not shown) which urge the roll 12 7 into tight contact with the roll 11.
In order to vary the speed ofrotation of the feed rolls 11- and 12 and, thus, the rate of feed of cover papers to the folding and associating mechanism and to assure registry of the feeding mechanism and the associating and folding mechanism, I have provided mean for shifting the belt 8 upon the conical pulleys 7 and 9. This means includes apair of belt shiftingrollers 18, 18, secured to arms 19, 19, which are operated by a screw 20. The screw 20 is actuated through suitable gearing 9O 21 and shafts 22 by manipulation of ahand wheel 23. The turning of the hand wheel 23 has the effect of-moving the belt-shifting rollers 18 transversely of the machine, and thus the belt is shifted on the conical pulleys 7. and 9, thereby effecting such slight variations'in the speed of rotation of the feed rolls as are required to bring the feeding into registry with thefolding mechanism.
I have also provided means for changing the speed of the feeding mechanism so that a predetermined number of cover papers may be fed to the machine. That is to say, if the magazine for which the cover is designed is one containing only a small number of pages, it is desirable to operate the feeding mechanism at such speed that two cover papers may be fed successively. If the magazine is one of a greater number of pages, the covers are fed at spaced intervals with respect to the pages. The means for accompilshing this change of speed includes gears 24 and 25 which are fixed to the shaft 10. Upon the shaft of the roller 11 I have provided gears 26 and 27 which mesh with the gears 24 and 25, respectively. By an inspection of Fig. 3, it will be seen that the gears 26 and. 24 are in a ratio of two-to-one, whereas the gears 27 and 25 are in one-to-one ratio. The gears 26 and 2'? are normally free or floating upon the shaft of the roller 11, and either one may be keyed to the shaft in accordance with the rate of feed desired. To accomplish this purpose. the shaft is provided with ratchets and 29 which are fixed thereon and the respective gears 26 and 27 are provided with spring-pressed pawls 30 and 31. -Whenever it is desired to change the rate of feed, it is necessary only to clutch the proper gear. either 26 or 27, to the shaft of the roller 11 by engaging the proper spring-pressed pawls with the ratchet. A suitable hand. wheel. ?2 is provided upon the shaft of the roller 11 for manual rotation of the roller when the cover paper is first being threaded through the mechanism, or in the event that the web should break.
By referring to Fig. 6. the coactiou between the feeding mechanism of my inven tion and the folding and associating mechanism of a standard magazine printing press will be clearly understood. The covers are fed to the folding and associating mechanism in the form of a continuous web W which is drawn from a re-wound roll 33 bv means of the feed rolls 11 and 12. Suitable tensioning rolls 84 may be interposed between the re-wound roll and the feed rolls. The cover paper passes from the feeding mechanism into the folding and associating mechan sm through suitable guide rolls, be ing in the meantime cut to the required size by the cutting rollers 85. The dotted lines bearing the reference-character S indicate the sheets or inside pages of the magazine which are conducted from the printing mechanism through suitable guide rolls. The sheets are combined with the cover at the point 36, and from there on the sheets with the cover on thg outside pass to the stitching mechanism 37 and thence to the folding cylinders or rolls 38 and 39, from which the magazine, completely folded and with the pages and cover properly stitched together, is deposited upon conveyors 40 and 4]..
It is understood that the mechanism for printing the inside pages and the folding and associating mechanism which is diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 6 may be of any standard and well known construction. My invention consists primarily in providing a feeding mechanism for feeding covers to such a machine in the form of a continuous web. Heretofore, the practice has been to print covers separately, and after cutting them to proper. size they have been stacked and fed to the associating mechanism as individual covers. By my invention, the operation of feeding covers to a magazine press may be considerably expedited and, furthermore, a great deal of labor is saved where the cover papers are printed upon a continuous Web.
I claim:
1. A feeding mechanism for supplying covers in the form of a continuous web to a folding and associating machine including a pair of feed rolls, means to vary the speed of said feed rolls to maintain registry with said folding and associating machine, and means to change the rate of feed of said web to successively supply a predetermined number of covers to the folding and associating machine.
2. A feeding mechanism for supplying covers in the form of a continuous web to a folding and associating machine including a pair of feed rolls, a shaft for one of said feed rolls provided with a plurality of floating gears, a drive shaft provided with fixed gears meshing with the floating gears on said feed roll shaft, and means to key a selected one of the floating gears to the feed roll shaft.
3. A feeding mechanism for supplying covers in the form of a continuous web to a folding and associating machine including a pair of feed rolls, a drive shaft provided with a plurality of fixed gears, a shaft for one of said feed rolls provided with a plurality of floating gears meshing with the gears on said drive shaft, a ratchet for each of said floating gears keyed to said feed roll shaft, and pawls on each of said floating gears engageable with its respective ratchet to permit a selected one of the floating gears to be keyed to the shaft.
4. A feeding mechanism for supplying covers in the form of a continuous web to a folding and associating machine including a pair of feed rolls, a drive shaft provided with a plurality of fixed gears, a shaft for one of said feed rolls provided with a plurality of floating gears meshing with the gears on said drive shaft, the said gears being of different ratios, a ratchet for each of said floating gears, and spring-pressed pawls on each of said floating gears engageable with a ratchet to permit a selected floating gear to be keyed to the shaft, whereby the feed rolls may be driven at a desired rate of speed.
5. A feeding mechanism for supplying covers in the form of a continuous web to a folding and associating machine including a pair of feed rolls, a drive shaft provided with a plurality of fixed gears, a shaft for one of said feed rolls provided with a plurality of floating gears meshing with the gears on said drive shaft, the said gears being of different ratios, means to key a selected one of the floating gears to the feed roll shaft, and means to vary the speed of rotation of the drive shaft to assure registry of the feeding mechanism and the folding and associating machine.
6. In combination, a machine for folding and associating sheet material received from one source, a feed mechanism adapted to feed additional sheet material from a difierent source to the machine in registry with the material from the first source, and means for varying the speed of said feeding means to maintain registry in the machine between the sheet materials received from the several sources.
7. In combination, a machine for folding and associating sheet material received from one source, a roll containing cover paperin the form of a continuous web, means for feeding cover paper from said roll in the form of a continuous web to the folding and associating machine therein tobe acted upon in combination with sheet material from said source, and means to vary the speed of said feeding means to maintain registry in the machine of the cover paper with the sheet material.
8. In combination, a machine for folding and associating sheet material received from one source, a roll containing cover paper in the form of a continuous. web, feed rolls for feeding cover paper from said roll in the form of a continuous web to the folding and associating machine therein to be acted upon with sheet material from said source, means to rotate said feed rolls, and means to vary the speed of rotation of said feed rolls to maintain registry in the machine of the cover paper with the sheet material.
9. In combination, a'machine for folding and associating sheet material received from one source, an additional source of material including a roll containing cover paper in the form of a continuous web, means to feed cover paper in the form of a continuous web from said roll to the machine to be acted upon therein with sheet material from the source, and means to change the speed of said feeding means to successively feed a desired number of covers to the machine in registry with the sheet material.
