5 for supporting the heels oi clamps or straps used on machine tools.
A further important object of this miren-' tion is to provide a clamp lockit'oil readyuse by machinists in factories, shops or the like ia vwhereby the work mayv bey positively and `securely supported inv position Aand in' av work- Vmanlike manner.y l
Still another and further important Vobject of this invention is the provision .for the use i5 in a machine shop or theV like of a plurality of bench Vclamp blocks of various sizes and shapes whereby objects to be worked 'upon may be readily supported in desired position with the further idea of so distinguishing H said bench blocks in appearance that they' may be readily selected from scrap or work lying on benches or on the loor in the shop.
Other and Yfurther important objects of the invention will be apparent romthe disclo-r` openings Varying with the dimensions of the sures in the accompanying drawings and ifo-llowing specilication.
The invention, inapreferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a clamp or strap used on a machine toolillustrating the improved clamp block of this invention.
Figure 2 is a side clamp block.
Figure 8 is 'a'top view ofi the-same.v i l Figure 1 is aV vertical sectional view of one end ofV the block. p
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2. Y
Ars shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a portion of a machine table or thelike :itl
elevation oftheimproved i 45 Hupon which a piece of work 12 is supported and held in position by means of an ordi-V sired size and shape and also in a variety naryclamp 14 and bolt'16.
In order that the cla-mp may be ei'lectively adjusted with respect to the bolt and the Y 50 Work, a block comprising` a portion of steel i929.Y serial No. 375,446.
tubing 18` is'provided 4of Vsubstantially the"y saine height asffthe work 12.v Obviously, a number 10i/these blocks are providedof va iousjkiridsso that any desiredheight V may be selected. 7 I 'Each 'block preferablyfiincludes afliard woodfcjore 2Q asbest shownin" Figures Itand 5', thenietal tubing 18 being shown squarein cross section but whichy obviously may lbe i round, `triangulanor any desiredfshape,v YThe hard `wood" core is put in `under pressure, and ateachl end of the'block is provided, a r'steel cap'22 maintained in position 'bymeans cfa screwfor' the like 24.' V*The* cap protects the'wocdagainst damage and also aids in keeping theends square. The wooden Vcore will adequately withstand vthe greatest pres- Asureproduced by the-bolt 16 and positively prevents Abuckling of the'tube.
' The blocksjare preferably lacqueredor painted in some bright color such as red or the like so as to be readily distinguished and selected. Gpenings 26 are provided ,in vthe sides of the blocks, the number of these block, and these are adaptedto retain the lacquer so that the same cannot be readily7 worn othe holes being further used for nger grips when the blocks are withdrawn from their containers. i
The blocks may be made from two inches in length up to any desired size and steel shims may also be used with the blocks, these shims preferably ranging from one-sixteenth of an inch up to one inch in thickness so that i the blocks and the clamp supports Vmay be built up in progressive steps of one-sixteenth of an inch.
l-Ieretofore,rvr it Vhas been the practice around Y of sizes and shapes so that any sort of work of practically any dimension maybe ade. quatelyand positively clamped in position upon a machine table. This results in a more convenient series of operations so far as the Work is concerned, and the fact that these blocks Will not collapse, and are readily distinguished and selected is an extension to their use.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a Wide range Without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: Y
A clamp block comprising a steel tube and a Wooden filler and reinforcementin the tube comprising a unitary core extending throughout the length of the same, and forced into the tube under pressure, together with metallicl caps on the ends of the tube and contacting the core and screws for maintaining said caps in position, said screws penetrating the material of the core, the edgesof the ends of the tube being Wedge-shaped, and corresponding angular grooves formed in the related outer edges of the said metallic caps, the tube having openings in its sides for linger grips. A
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
