This invention relates to car roofs ofthe rallsteel riveted-up type wherein the roof sheets are supported at the eavesrof the car on inwardly extending portions of the side 5'pla-tes and arerigidly` secured to each other by weatherproofing seam caps that function as outside carlines and more particularly it relates to the subtype `of roof wherein the seam caps have'base flanges that rest upon the l@ raised panels formed in the adjacent margins of the roof sheets. The principal object of the present invention is to provide simple and eficient weatherproof .means independent of the side plates for holding in contact with l5 each other the portions or" the base iianges of the seam caps and the roof sheet that are lo- Y cated above the inwardly extending sheet supporting portions ofsaid side plates. Another object is to provide means for'transmitting the load fromthe seam caps to the roof sheet supporting portions of the side plates Ywithout crushingv the raised side marginal panels of the roof sheets. Referringto the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown in connection with a car roof having side plates A substantially Z- shaped in cross-section with thefinner leg lupstanding and provided at its topy with an inwardlyv extending flange ,2 disposed at an angle conforming to the pitch of the roof and at the proper elevation for theend portions of metal roof sheets 3 to rest upon. As shown inthe drawings, the inwardly extending roof sheet, supporting'flange 2 is formed integral withthe side plate; but, in some instances,k it may be desirable to make such'iiange in the form of a ,separatevmember and rivet it to the'side plate.

The side seam flanges 7 are of substantiallyuniform depth from ridge to the points adjacent to the eaves where their depth is decreased to permit the eaves end portions to ybe turned down without* rupturing the metal or galvanizing.. y c
\ The adjacent upstanding side seam anges y7 of the roof sheets are covered by yweather-` proong members preferably inthe form of inverted U`shaped combined seam capsand outside' carlinesS', which extend fromreaves Y roof sheets. The seam caps 8 are provided at the lower edges of the side walls of their hollow ribs with outstanding base flanges 10 that bear flatwise upon the side marginal panels 6 of the adjacent roof sheets and are turned down over the depending eaves flanges of said sheets and secured to the side plates by the rivets 5. As the depth of the hollow ribs of the seam caps Sydecrease from the ridge'towards the eaves, there is a correspondingy increase inv the widthr ofthe base flanges 10 from the ridge towards the eaves.
Located between the raised side marginal panels 6 of adjacent roof sheets and the inwardly extending roof sheet supporting flanges 2 of ftheside plates are filler .members or plates 11. The filler members Y11 .extend longitudinally of the roofsheetsupporting flanges 2 from the inner edge of one roof sheetanel to the inner edge of the adjacentroo `sheet panel and are'preferably of a'thickness correspondingtto the space between said panels `and said roof sheet supporting flanges. The filler plates 11 are rigidly secured to the undersides offadjacent'side marginal roof sheet panels 6 by meansL f of rivets 12 that pass through the basefflanges 1() of the-seam caps 8 and thus serve to hold the eaves portions of said base flanges in contact with upper surfaces of said side marginal sheet panels. As shown in the drawings, the rivets 12 whichA tightly cla-mpthe raised marginal sheet panels 6 between the filler plates 11 and the base flanges 10 of the seam caps 8, have their lower heads countersunk in the ,bottom of said filler plates so as to enablesaid filler plates to bear flatwise upon the inwardly extending sheet supporting flanges 2 of the side plates.
Ink the modified construction shown in Figs. and 6, the eaves filler plate is shown in the form of a pressed metal member 11a having downwardly extending cross ribs 11b pressed ytherein intermediate its ends that earupon the sheet supporting flange 2 of the side plate.- Vith this arrangement, the major portion of the strip 11a bears flatwise against the undersides of the raised side marginal sheetpanels -6, and the end portions of said strip arefspaced farfenough above the sheet supporting flange 2 of the side platerto accommodateftheflat heads at the lower ends of the securing rivets 12a, thereby :eliminating the necessity for countersinkingthe lower heads of the rivets inthe filler .memben 'By the arrangement described, the base flanges 10 of the seam caps Sfare firmly held in -contact withl the raised side marginal panels 6 of the roof sheets where' the height of thefupstandingseam flanges 7 is reduced, thereby-preventing water from getting under the seam cap flanges at this point and beingl forced over the shallow eaves portions of said flanges and thus entering the car. The rivets 12, which secure the seam cap flanges 10 to the raised side marginal panels 6 of the roof sheets, are located above the inwardly extending sheet supporting flanges of the side plates 2, but they do not extend through said flanges, with the result that any water that leaks through the holes for said rivets will be deposited upon said roof sheet supporting flanges and flow therefrom to the outside of the car. The filler plates 11 are supported on the sheetysupporting flanges 2 and thus serve to transfer the roof load from the seam caps 8 to the side plates A -without crushing the roof sheet panels 6. The 'lower ends of the rivets 12 are flush with kthe underside filler plates 11 and thus permit said plates to bear flatwise upon' the roof sheet supporting flanges 2 of the side plates. Inv assembling the roof, the filler plates l1 are preferably riveted in place before the roofis applied to the car, after which the complete roof is lifted with a crane and attached to the car by riveting the downturned caves ends ofthe roof sheets and seam caps to the upstanding inner-legs` 1 of the Vside plates.
What I claim is:
1. A car roof comprising side plates, roof sheets supported on said side plates, said roof sheets being provided along their'adjacent margins with upstanding seam flangesseam caps covering the upstanding seamk flanges of adjacent roof sheets and having lateral base flanges that overlie the body port-ions thereof, and means for rigidly securing the base flanges of said seam caps to the body portions of said roof sheets, said means being independent of the means for securing said sheets and caps to the substructure that supports them.
2. A car roof comprising side plates, roof sheets supported on said side plates, saidroof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam flanges, seam caps connecting the upstanding seam flanges of adjacent roof sheets and having lateral base flanges resting on the body portions thereof, and means for rigidly securing the eaves end portions of the base flanges of said seam caps to the body portions of said'roof sheets, said means being independent of the means for securing said sheets and caps to the substructure that supports them.
3. A car roof comprisingsideplates, roof sheets extending from side plate to side plate and rigidly secured thereto, said roof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam flanges, seam caps straddling the upstanding seam flanges of adjacent roof sheets and having lateral base flanges resting on the body portionsthereof, and means for rigidly securing the base flanges of said seam caps to the body portions of said roof sheets, said means being independentozt the means for securing said sheets and caps to the substructure Athatsupports them. j n Y.

the sheets clamped therebetween, saidmeans being independent of the means'for securing said sheets and caps to the substructure that suports them. f l

A car roof comprising side plates, roof l sheets extending from sideplateto side plate and rigidlyl secured thereto, 'said roof sheets being provided along their adjacent margins with upstanding seam langes, seam caps cov ering said seamr ilanges and rigidly secured thereto, said seam caps having outstanding base flanges that overlie the body portions of adjacent roof sheets, a pluralityof members disposed cross-wise of said seam caps beneath i adjacent roof sheets', and means for rigidly securing kthe end portions of said members and the base flanges of said seam caps yto the bodies of thereof sheets, said means being independent of the means for securing said sheets and caps to the substructure that supports them.
