MARGIN BAR FOR DUPLICATING MAOHINES Application filed .Tune 10, 1929. serial No. 369,624.
This invention relates to margin bars for duplicating machines and more particularly to automatically controlled margin bars adapted for use on that class of machines 3 commonly known as hectographs or duplicating machines similar to that shown and des ribed in my copending` application,
Serial No. 349,876, wherein is provided a flat printing bed over which is stretched a long and comparatively thin gelatinized band or apron, the ends being secured to and wound upon rolls or spools adjacent the ends ofthe printing bed so that by rotating the spools successive sections of the band may be eX- i; posed in operative positionon the bed.
This type of machine is provided with a platen carriage having a suitable platen roller which is adapted to travel over the printing bed for impressing the original or the s) copy sheets on the gelatinized band which reeeives the impression from the original sheet and transfers it to the copy sheet.
In positioning the original or copy sheets on the gelatinizecl band it is necessary to provide aV suitable margin stop bar in order that the desired uniform margin may be obtained on the copies and that the paper may be accurately located with relation to the car,- riage and feed rolls.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an automatically controlled margin bar which will provide an effective paper locating means and which will not interfere in any way ith the operation of the cars riage or the movement of the platen roller.
Another object is to provide an automatic adjustable marO'in bar in which the width of the margin may be predetermined and accurately adjusted.
4P Another object is to provide a margin bar automatically controlled by the movement of the carriage and one which is at all times under the control of the operator through the platen roller handle.
5; Still another object is the provision of a margin bar which may be manually moved away from the edge of the printingsurface to allorY access to the gelatinized roll and which is securely held in either its normal or 1.5.@ moved position.
:lustrated in Fig. l, the margin bar and cooperating parts being shown in their normal position when the carriage is moved to the yrear of the machine;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the lineB-S ofFig. 2,-showing the margin bar raised to the same position'shown in Fig. l in which the carriage is inthe eX- treme'forward position; f
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the margin control adjusting means; 7D'
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, the margin bar being in its normal lowered position;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation partially in section of the margin bar operating 7, means with the carriage at theY extreme front and the platen roller lowered in printing position; and
Fig. 7 is a view similar toy Fig. 6 showing the position of the parts when the platen roller is raised and the carriage is not at the extreme front of the machine.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in detail, my invention as illustratedcomprises a duplicating machine having the side frames l and 2 on which is supported the bed plate 3. A gelatinized band 4, which is of a length much greater than that of the printing bed, is wound upon suitable spools or spindles adjacent the ends of the bed, one of which is shown at 6. By turning one of the spools, successive sections of tle gelatinized band may be moved to eX- posed position in either direction as desired so that when several impressions are on the band at one time any one of them may be moved into position so that copies may be produced in the desired position on the paper and provided with a suitable margin.
The carriage which is arranged to be moved over the printing bed comprises a substantially rectangular frame 7 having suitable bearings, not shown, for allowing it to be shifted back and forth over the gelatinized printing surface. The arrangement is such that the carriage may be moved over the printing bed or raised to permit inspection or removal of the gelatinized band.
The platen roller 8 is mounted on the yoke 9 which is, in turn, pivotally mounted on a suitable bearing rod 10 which is supported on the carriage frame. The spring 11 tends to force the yoke to the raised portion shown in Fig. 1. The yoke may be moved to operative printing position, see Fig. 6, by means of the handle 12. 1t is normally held in printing position by a spring lock and may be released at any time by means of the lock handle 13. The lock is not shownv as it forms no part of the present invention.
The usual gripping or pressure roller 14 is mounted on the carriage as shown adjacent the platen roller and in a position to grip the paper when it is inserted between the platen roller and the gripping roller and the handle V12 pushed forward to move the platen roller to printing position. The platen roller in its downward movement presses the gripping roller rearwardly and carries the paper which is.k inserted between the rollers down against the gelatinized band, the paper being guided during insertion by the guide plate 15 having suitable movable guides thereon to adjust the lateral position of the paper. The gripping roller 14 is mounted in adjustable sliding bearings 15a and adjusted by means of the nuts 16, the springs 17 holding it normally in forward position.
When the carriage is in its extreme forward positionra'nd the platen roller raised as in Fig. 1 the paper is inserted between the rollers until it is stopped by the raised back 18 of the adjustable margin bar 19, the position of this bar determining the margin.
The margin bar extends across and adj acent the front edge of the printing bed, its ends being rigidly secured to the down turned, slidably mounted members 20 and 21, one of these members being provided at each end of the bar.
The margin har is mounted for slidable movement on the movable yoke or supporting member 22, which is, in turn, mounted for longitudinal movement between the side frames 1 and 2 and extends beneath and adjacent the under side of the printing bed. The yoke 22 comprises the side rack bars 23 and 24 which are rigidly connected together by the cross bar 25.
Each of the rack bars 23 and 24 is provided with inwardly extending pins 26 engaging in the slots 2T which are provided in the downturned margin bar end members 2O and 21. The slots are positioned to a low the free oblique movement of the margin bar 19 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that in Figs. 1 and 3.
Directly under the cross bar 25 of the yoke 22 is the transverse pinion shaft 28, mounted for free rotation in the side frames 1 and 2, and having integral therewith the pinion 29 engaging the rack 23 and the pinion 30 engaging the rack 24. p
rEhe front end of the yoke is supported on the pins 31 which engage the front notches 32 in the rack members` 22 and 24 when the yoke is in normal operating position, thus preventing longitudinal movement. T he racks are held in engagement with the pinions by means of the rollers 33 on the side frames.
y 1n order to allow removal or inspection of the gelatiniZed roll, the rack members are provided withV the notches 34 in which are the pins 31 when the yoke is moved to its forward position.
1n moving the margin bar away from the edge of the printing bed, the front end o'f the yoke. is raised until the pins 31 are disengaged from the notches 32. It is then moved forward until in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.V 5' when the pins 31 will be engaged in the notches 34, the pinions 29 and 30 serving to keep the yoke in alignment.
rllhe yokek is guided and prevented from lateral displacement by the lugs 35 and 36 on the side frames.
in order that the margin bar may be retained in parallel alignment with the front edge of the printing surface during its oblique movement, equalizing levers 37 are fulcrumed on the yokecross bar 25 and provided with the equalizing gearteeth 38, the opposite ends of the levers being connected to the downturned ends 20 and 21 of the margin bar by means of the links 39 whereby, when the equalizing levers are operated, the margin bar will be moved obliquely on the pins 26.
The operation of the margin bar is accomplished through the T-shaped cam lever 40 aivoted at 41 on the yoke rack bar and adjacent the side frame 1. The lever 40 is provided with a pin42 engaging in the slot 43 in the lever 44 which isv pivoted on the depending arm 45 of the yoke member 22. rlhe upper end of the lever is connected to one of the equalizing levers through the link 46, the lever 47 pivoted at 48 on the cross bar 25, and the link 49. 1t is obvious that with this construction, when the T-shaped lever is r cked the margin bar will be moved obliquely from the position shown in Fifi'. 5 to that in Figs. 1 and 3 or vice versa,
1n order that the margin bar may be moved automatically relative to the position of the platen roller and carriage, the'T-shaped lever 40 is provided with a cam surface 50 arranged to engage the roller 51 on the member 52 which is adjustably pivoted on the yoke supporting rod 10 on the carriage.
The member 52 is normally held in the the position shown in Fi. 1 by means ofthe spring 'and the sliding plug 54,the strength of the spring 53 being suflicient to hold the margin bar in the raised position shown. In this position the original or copy sheet may be inserted between the platen and pressure rollers and against the margin bar 19. The platen roller is then lowered by means of the handle 12, the pin 54a on the yoke 9 engaging the arm 55 and moving the member 52 to compress the spring 53. During this movement the arm iengages the cam surface of the T-shaped lever 40 (subsequent to the gripping of the sheetl between the rollers 8 and 14.-) moving the leverto the positionl shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and lowering the margin bar to the position shown in Fig.l 5. The parts are then in the position shown in Fig. 6, with the' carriage in its extreme forward position and when the carriage is moved towards the rear ofthe machine as shown in Fig. 7, the platen roller may be raised or lowered without affecting the position of the margin bar. When the carriage is moved toward the front of the machine with the platen roller raised, the pin 54a will be out of engagement with the ar1n55 and the roller 51 will be in a position to engage the cam surface to raise the margin bar to the position shown in Fig. 1. If the carriage is moved to the front of the machine while the platen roller is lowered against the printing surface, the pin 54a will be in engagement with the, arm 55 holding the member 52 in inoperative position.
lVhen the platen roller is in the raised position the member 52 rests against the stop 57 which may be accurately adjustedby means of the thumb screw 58 which is held rigidly in position by means of the spring 59 engaging the notches 60.
By adjusting this thumb screw, the normal position of the member 52 will be varied to change the limit of movement of the margin bar with relation to. the movement of the platen roller. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and ldesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
