G. AsBEcK ROLLING MILL Filed March 7, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 lu rolls.
Patented Feb. 23, 1932 PATENT; OFFICE GUSTAV SBEGK, 10F DUSSELDORF-BATH, GERMAY ROLLNG MILL Application led March l?, 1929, Serial No. 345,027, and in Germany November 2, 1923.
lily invention relates to improvements in rolling mills, and more particularly in mills ol' the type in which a plurality oit' rolls disposed radially of the blank b'eing rolled are l; driven by means of a common gear Wheel disposed concentrically of the blank being rolled the gearing ordinarily comprising a hyperbolic concentric gear Wheel meshing with pinions connected with the individual The object of the improvements is to provide a driving mechanism oi the type indicated in which the rolls can be readjusted in case ot Wear Without interfering With the proper engagement of the teeth or the gear mg. Another object of the improvements is to provide a driving mechanism in which the rolls can be readily dismounted Without disinounting the driving gear. Further, an object or the improvements is to construct the driving mechanism so that the proper engagement of the gear teeth is not interfered 'with when adjusting or dismounting the rolls. WWith these objects in View my invention consists in constructing the shafts carrying the rolls and the driving gears thereof in two sections coupled With each other so as to permit radial displacement of the rolls relatively to the blank being rolled. Further, the section oi the shaft carrying the roll is mounted so as to be axially shitable in its bearing.
liter the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,
lllig. l is an elevation partly in section showing a mill provided "with sets of three rolls, liig.. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l,
llig. 3 is a sectional elevation on an en-I larged scale showing one of' the rolls and its driving mechanism,
llig. Il is a sectional plan view taken on the line l-d of Fig. 3,
lHig. 5 is a detail view showing the means tor coupling the sectional shaft ot the roll,
and
Fig. 6 is a diagam showing the manner of tm adjusting 'the rol In the example shown in the figures the mill comprises a lrame composed of two sections connected with each other by flanges 2G each section being formed with an axial tubular portion 2 having a tubular member 28 mounted therein for guiding the blank being rolled. ln the example shown in Figs. l and 2 at each side of the frame three rolls a; are mounted, which are disposed radially of the axis of the mill, each of the said rolls being secured to a shaft made in two sections w and e, y coupled with each other by means of a coupling disk 17, as will be described hereinafter. The section .e of the shaft is coupled With a tubular shaft y carrying a gear wheel and the gear Wheelsf connected with all the rolls of each set are in mesh With a hyperbolic gear wheel ddisposed concentrically ofthe axis or' the mill. As appears from Fig. 2, two hyperbolic gear Wheels d are provided at opposite sides of the median plane passed through the mill, and the gear Wheels are secured to a spur gear 29 rotatably mounted on the portions 27 by means ot' antifriction bearings 30 and in driving engagement with a pinion 3l keyed to the shaft or' a motor 32.
The sectional shaft a' of each roll is mounted in a cylindrical casing 3 embedded in a semi-cylindrical cavity 6 of the frame 25, all the said cavities being covered by a head 7 formed With similar semi-cylindrical cavities corresponding to the cylindrical casings 3. The cylindrical casings 3 are connected with the head 7 for example by means of hails 8 embracing the casings and fixed in position by means of nuts 33, as is shown in Fig. 4, so that all the casings and the parts carried thereby are removed when dismounting the head 7. The bails 8 are located in annular grooves made in the Walls ofthe cavities 6.
The sectional shaft :v is eccentrically mounted Within the casing 3 by means of anti-friction bearings 2, the said casing being provided with an eccentric bore receiving the said anti-friction bearings, as is shown in Fig. 4. Therefore, by turning the casings 3 about their axes the rolls are adjusted radially of the axis of the mill. Suitable means are provided for thus turning the casings 3.
AAs shown in Fig. 4, the casing 3 is provided head 7. Thus, by turning the nut 5 the rack 4 is 'shifted to the right or left for turning the casing 3. 'I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the means for turning the casings 3.
The casings 3 are axially adjustable in their cavities. Asshown, thesaidcasingsarescrewthreaded at their outer ends, and kinternally screw-threaded rings 9 are screwing on said screw-threaded ends, which rings 9 are provided with circumferential grooves 50 engaged by collars 51 projecting inwardly from the semi-cylindrical cavities of the frame 25 and the head 7. Thus, by screwing the rings 9 inwardly or outwardly the rolls a are ad- 'usted in axial direction. After thus adjusting the rolls the rings 9 are fixed in position by check nuts 10.
The tubular shaft y carrying the hyperbolic gpar wheel f is mounted by means of antiiction bearings 11 and 12 in a sleeve 13 disposed in a cylindrical portion 14 made integral with the frame 25, the sleeve 13 being adapted to be put into the portion 14 from the outer end thereof, and it is fixed in position by means of a head 38 secured to the portion 14.
The shaft section z is formed at its bottom with an enlarged head 15 connected with the rim of the gear wheel f by feather keys 21, and the shaft Section a: is formed at its top with a similar head 16. Between the heads 15 and 16 there is a disk 17 formed at its top and bottom sides with ribs 18 and 19 disposed at right angles to each other and engaging in corresponding grooves 39 and 40 formed in the heads 15 and 16. The rib 19 and the groove 39 are dove-tailed in cross-section, so that the disk 17 follows the movement of the shaft section a in axial direction and is adapted to be retracted out of coupling engagement with the shaft section at, as is necessary for removing the head 7, the casings 3 and the rolls a from the mill. By reason of the coupling disk 17 and the ribs 18 and 19 thereof disposed at right angles the shaft sections :v and z can be brought out of alignment for Vadjusting the rolls a radially of the mill,
without interfering with the proper engagement of the parts and the transmission of the power from the shaft section a to the shaft section ar. I wish it to be understood that the coupling means shown herein are merely an example of such means, and that other coupling means having a similar function may be provided, such for example as universal joints, coupling spindles, and the like.
The shaft sections is adapted to be retracted with the disk 17 out of engagement with the shaft section by means of a hand wheel 20 connected with the shaft section :v and screwing in the head 38. The shaft z is rotatably connected with the said nut by means of an anti-friction bearing 42 located in a socket of the hub 43 of the hand wheel and held in position therein by means of a nut 44, the inner race rin 45 of the anti-friction bearing being secure to the top end of the shaft z by bearing on a shoulder 46 and being clamped thereon by means of nuts 47.
In order to reduce displacement of the shaft sections a; and a when adjusting the rolls a, I prefer to mount the same relatively to each other in the manner indicated in the diagram shown in Fig. 6. In the said diagram the character I indicates the axis of the casing 3, and the characters II1 and 112 indicate the end positions of the axis of the shaft section resulting from rotation of the casing 3 by means of the rack 4. The character III indicates the axis of the gear wheel f and the Y shaft section a. Thus, the radial displacement of the rolls a is represented by the distance between the points II1 and IP.
It may be remarked that in Fig. 3 the mill is provided at each side with four rolls a.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be -made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the constructlon of its parts without departing from the invention.
