WIRE TIER TOOL Filed June 20, 1930 Jesse l/ortsfidm INVENTOR TTTTT NZY Patented Feb. 16, 1932 UNITED STATES 31583 G. WORSHAM, OF CHAIPAIGN', ILLINOIS WIRE TIER TOOL Application filed June 20, 1980. Serial No. 488,657.
My present invention has reference to a simple, easily operated and thoroughly efl'ective tool for twisting the ends of wires employed on concrete forms, fences and the like, and
the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement in operative osition.
" Figure 2 is a si e elevation thereof, with the sleeve in section.
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 5 is a sectional view approximately on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view to illustrate the manner in which the wire is loosely twisted around a post or the like prior to the said wire being operated on by the tool for tightly twisting the same and binding the wire on the post or the like.
As disclosed by Figure 6 of the drawings a post or like structure 1 has loosely arranged therearound a wire 2. The ends of the Wire 2 are crossed, as at 3, to provide the same with lateral extremities 4.
The tool comprises essentially a cylindrical member which I will term a sleeve and which is indicated by the numeral 5. The sleeve 5 has its outer face knurled, as at 6, and its bore provided with a continuous thread. The lower or outer end of the sleeve 5 has oppositely directed substantially L-shaped 1 notches whose vertical branches 7 enter from 5 the said end of the sleeve and whose oppositely directed lateral branches 8 enter the opposite sides of the sleeve.
Threaded through the bore of the sleeve 5 there is the screw 9. This screw has a shank extension 10 whose outer end is shaped to be received in the chuck of an ordinary carpenters brace.
When the wire 2 is arranged as disclosed by M Figure 6 of the drawings the ends 4 thereof are passed through the branches 7 and into the lateral branches 8 of the L-shaped slots, the screw 9 being partly backed out of the sleeve. The sleeve is held from turning and the screw is brought into contact with the juncture of the twisted ends 3 with the extremities 4 of the wire 2. The sleeve 5 is resisted from turning by contact of the branches 4 of the Wire with the end walls of the passages 8 and the screw is threaded through the sleeve so that all of the wire 2 is not only tightly twisted but is brought into frictional enga ement with all of the walls of the post or li e element 1. To remove the tool it is merely necessary to unscrew the shank 10 and turn the sleeve one-fourth of a 60 revolution.
With my improvement it will be ap arent that a loose wire can be easily, uick y and effectively twisted and tightene around a post or like structure.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A tool for tightly fastening a partly twisted wire which is arranged around a post or the like and which wire has its ends, from its twisted portion, provided with oppositely directed extensions, said tool comprising a knurled sleeve having opposite directed L- shaped slots entering from one end thereof and having its bore threaded and a shank designed to be engaged by the chuck of a bit or the like and having a screw end which is threaded in the bore of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JESSE G. WORSHAM.
