My invention relates to head bar brackets for Venetian blinds and has particular reference to brackets comprising means for adjusting and looking a head bar in a desired position with reference to a frame within which it is mounted.

Venetian blinds, as now in common use, comprise a plurality of slats supported from a main tilting bar in a manner to be adjusted to open or closed positions by rotary movement of the bar, which in turn is mounted within a window frame preferably upon the lower side of a head bar that is secured to the frame. According to the prior art devices, the head bars have been supported by means of brackets that did not provide means for adjusting the head bar, thereby necessitating an exact location of the brackets to properly position the head bar in its desired location. It has been the practice also heretofore to secure the head bars to the brackets by means that did not permit a ready attachment or removal of the bars-from the supports.

According to my invention, I propose to support the head bar at each end thereof upon a two part adjustable bracket and provide a quickly detachable connection between the bar and one part of the bracket with the object of reducing the time and expense of installation to a minimum.

My invention has for another object to provide a unitary bracket and head bar lock composed of readily assembled elements that may be cheaply made by means of metal stampings and in a manner to provide a maximum of strength.

Another object is to provide in such brackets in combination, integral means adapted to afford a support for certain screen parts to be described. I

Other objects will readily appear from a reading of the detailed specifications which follow and from the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view showing portions of a Venetian blind mounted by means of a bracket constructed according to my invention;

Referring to the drawings in detail, the head bar 1 is detachably supported within a wall frame opening by means of adjustable brackets 2, hereinafter described in detail.

A Venetian blind comprising a tilting bar 3 and the usual slats 4 is suspended from the head bar by means of brackets 5, and operating cables 6 which pass over a pulley 7 are provided for adjusting the tilting bar and slats to any desired position. The adjustable bracket 2 which constitutes the sub ject of the present invention is shown in detail in Figure 3 and comprises two

8 and 9 which are mounted in slidable contact to provide relative adjustment therebetween. Each

8 and 9 is formed preferably by stamping the same from metal stock and bending portions thereof. The member 8 is formed to provide a vertically extending wall portion 9 and a pair of lat erally extending

flanges

10 and 11. A plurality of openings 12 are provided in the flange 10 and wall 9 for the purpose of receiving screws or the like adapted to fasten the member 8 to the window frame. A supporting 'fiange 13 extends laterally from the lower lines, to a locking position, as shown in full lines, and is releasably retained in its looking position by a lug 24 which is formed upon the lower edge of the flange 20. The locking member is provided adjacent its pivotal point with an arcuate locking extension 25 more clearly shown in Fig. 5 as arranged to enage a recess 26 formed in the lower face of the head bar 1 when-the member 21 is in its horizontal locking position. It will'be noted in Fig. 1 that one end of the head bar is adapted to rest upon the portion 19 in engagement with the

8 and 9 are assembled in slidable engagement, with the portion 19 overlying and in contact with the portion 13 and with the stop 17 positioned below and in contact with the lateral flange 11. A bolt 27 is arranged to pass through an opening 28 formed in the flange 2'0 and through the slot 15 and'threadably engages a nut 29 which is positioned in rear of the flange 14. It will be notedthat one side of the nut 29 is arranged to. engage the lower face of the flange 13, thereby preventing the nut from rotating during rotation of the bolt 27. The member 9 may be locked in any position to which it may be adjusted upon the member 8 by the clamping action of the bolt 27 and nut 29.

Figure 5 shows a modification wherein a bracket member 8 is provided which is simi lar to the bracket member shown in Figure 2, with the exception that the laterally extending flange member 10 is modified by forming integrally therewith an angular extension 30 which provides a pair of faces 31 and 32 arranged at right angles to each other. The purpose of the extension 30 is to serve as a positioning and supporting means for a screen 33. It will be noted that the side frame of the screen may be engaged under the extension 30 before or after the bracket member 8 has been secured to the face of the window frame. Such construction provides a simple and economical bracket which serves the double function of supporting a head bar and an adjacent screen.

Figures 6 and 7 show a further modification wherein the bracket member 8 is modified to provide a means for attachment thereto of a roll screen casing 34. The vertical wall portion 9 is provided with laterally extending flanges 35 and 36 and a pair of struck out lugs 37 which serve to receive and position one end of the casing 34. The wall porti on 9' is further provided with a plurality of openings 38, and a plurality of lugs are provided on the end of the casing 34, which lugs are passed through the openings 37 and-are bent over in the usual manner to attach the casing 34 to the bracket 8. A roll screen 39 is mounted within the casing 34 and is piv otally mounted at an end thereof in a bearing 40 formed on the vertical wall 9'. The roll screen 39 is engaged along one edge thereof within a vertical guide member 41. An extension 42 formed on the bracket member 8 cooperates with the guide member in a manner to support the latter. The construction described provides an adjustable bracket which serves not only to-support and detachably lock the head bar in position, but also to support a roll screen, thereby affording a simple, effective and economical support for the elements described.

The operation of the device will be obvious from the above description. The unitary bracket may be installed in an approximate position on the supporting frame by means of the screws 12. The Venetian blind as a unit may be applied to the frame by merely inserting the ends of the head bar from the front, between the lug 18 and the flange 19 and sliding the bar to the rear to contact the lug 17. Thereafter, the lock 21 is rotated to engage its portion 25 within the bar recess 26. It will be noted that the various operations of engaging the head bar, locking and unlocking the same, and adjustment of the bracket and suspended blind may be effected in a minimum of time and in a simple and practical manner. In the event that the installation calls for a frame screen or a roll screen, brackets will be selected which have been modified to afford the added screen support, in which case a further economy of time and expense may be effected in connection with the entire assembly and installation.

WhileI have shown and described pre-- ferred forms of my invention for the purpose of illustration, 1 do not desire to be limited to the forms shown, but reserve for myself such modifications as may be embraced within the scope of the claims which follow.

What I claim is:

1. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket, means on said bracket for supporting one end of said bar, a locking member associated with said bracket, a detent on said bar, said looking member being movable to engage said detent for detachably locking said bar to said bracket.

2. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket for supporting one end of said bar, a locking member movably mounted on said bracket, a detent on one face of said bar, said locking member being movable to engage said detent for supporting for supporting one end of said bar, a locking member movably mounted on said bracket, said bar being provided with a recess on one face thereof, said locking member being movable to detachably en age within said recess.

4. In a venetian bIind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket for supporting one end of said bar, a locking member movably mounted on said bracket, a detent on said bar, said locking member being movable to engage said detent, and detent means on said bracket in position to enga c said locking member in its locking position for yieldingly retaining said member in locking position.

5. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket for supporting said head bar on a frame, said bracket comprisin a portion attachable to said frame and an a justable portion movably mounted on said other portion, means on said adjustable portion for on aging one end of said bar, and means mova ly mounted on said adjustable rtion for detachably locking said bar to sai adjustable portion.

6. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket for supporting one end of said bar, said bracket comprisin relatively ad'ustable ortions, one portion ing provide with a orizontal portion for supporting one end of said bar in position a ove said latter portion, means on said other portion for slidably supporting said first named portion and means for locking said portions in adjusted positions.

7 In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket one end of said bar, said bracket comprising relatively adjustable portions, each ortion being formed to provide a horizontal portion and web portions extending in opposite directions from op its sides of said horizontal portion, said a ji lstable portions arranged with their horizontal portions in slidable contact.

8. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar for supporting said blind, a bracket for supporting one end of said bar on a frame, said bracket comprising a portion attachable to said frame and an adjustable portion movabl mounted on said other portion, said adjustable portion being formed to rovide a horizontal portion and a depen 'ng portion, said horizontal portion arranged to support said bar, and lockin means on said depending portion for detac lably engaging said bar.

9. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar, a bracket for supporting one end of said bar, a locking lever pivoted on said bracket, said bar being provided with a detent, one end of said lever being engageable with said detent in the locking position of said lever.

10. A unitary bracket for simultaneousl supporting a screen and a Venetian blin head bar, one end of said bracket being pro vided with means for detachabl supporting said head bar, and means on sai bracket for supporting a portion of said-screen.

11. In a bracket support for a Venetian blind head bar, means on one end of said bracket for supportin an end of said bar, means for locking sai bar to said bracket, and means on said bracket for engaging a screen to provide asupport therefor.

12. In a Venetian blind in combination, a head bar, a bracket for su porting one end of said bar, means on sai tachably engaging said bar, a roll screen casing, and means on said bracket for supporti one end of said casing.

13. n combination, a Venetian blind, a head bar for supporting said blind, a roll screen casing, a bracket for su porting said bar and said casing, said brac at being adjustable to vary the distance between the bar, and casing.
