IMPROVEMENT IN BUSTLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184.571, dated November 21, 1876; application led v October 14, 1876.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM R. BARK- SHIRE and DUANE T. DAvIs, of Pana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvementl in Bnstles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the ears or side plates. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the belt and hook. Fig.4is a perspective section of the same.

This invention has relation to tournures or bustles for ladies use; and it consists of the upwardly and outwardly bent wires running from side to side, and the downwardly-bent brace wire, the coil bends near the ends of the same, the ears or plates to which the ends of the wires are attached, and the adjusting-belt, as hereinafter fully shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the lateral ears or plates, to which the wires of the bustle and the belt are attached. B B' represent the bows of the bustle, which extend one below the other upward and outward 'from side to side. C indicates the brace-bow, which is arranged in a downward curve from side to side. The ears A are each cut out in front, at a, and above and below this notch or bay extend forward short arms b, to which theends of the bracebow are secured. These ends extend across the notch or bay ofthe ear, as shown at c, and form bars for the attachment ofthe belt D. At about the middle of each ear the end of the upper bow B is attached in a position nearly vertical, and in rear thereof the end of the lower bow B' is attached to said ear in a horizontal position or at right angles with the end of the bow B. These ends thus form ribs on the plate, as shown at e, and serve to strengthen the same.

Beyond the margin of each ear or fastening-plate, each bow is bent into a coil vertically, as shown at g. These coils give elasticity to the bows near the ear, and prevent the wires from being distorted, and permanently bent out of shape by pressure.

If desirable, the ends of the bows may be fastened permanently to the ears, or they may be made adjustable, and secured by set-screws or otherwise, being thereby readily adapted to larger or smaller persons; The `belt D is provided vwith a buckle or other fastening, whereby it may be secured around the waist. The belt is secured at the sides to the bars c of the plates by hooks h or other suitable fastenings, which are designed to be easily adjusted on the belt, so that the plates or ears of the bustle may be arranged nearer together or farther apart, as may be necessary to give the desired fullness.

When the bustle is fastened around'the waist, the brace-bow O extends'down the back, and serves to contract the pressure upon. the

By means of the end coils, the braces are arranged to spring out of the way under the weight of the person, when sitting or lying, and to readjnst themselves in position when relieved from this pressure.

As usually constructed, the plates A are formed of rectangular blanks of sheet metal,

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

2. The folded side plates A for bustles, bent at z, cnt out at a, and corrugated at c, for the reception of the ends of the bows, and secured by the turned-down corners k, substantially as specified.

3. In a bustle, having the outward and upward bows B B', coiled vertically at g, the bracebow C extending downward to rest against the back, and counteract the pressure on the bustle-bows, substantially as specified.
