' N T D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL O. WILLIAMS, OF PETERSTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,567., dated November 21, 187 6; application filed September 2, 1876.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMIUEL O. WILLIAMS, of Peterstown, in the county of Monroe and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Carrier, of which the following is a specification:
,Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top view of one of the trays, with the cover thrown open. Fig; 3 is a detail view of one of the trays.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the arrangement, in a suitable box, of a series of trays, having muslin pockets forroll or print butter.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A is a box, provided with a hinged cover, B, and containing the trays a a b b. The trays a are" for holding print butter, and consist of a frame, 0, that loosely fits thebox A, and is providedwith a panel, (1, near its top, that is cut out at e to receive the muslin pocketsf, which are not as deep as the frame 0. The pockets are tacked or otherwise fastened to the edges of the apertures in the panel. The sides of the pockets extend above the panel, and are provided with a draw-string, n, that is capable of closing together the top, forming a cover for the pocket. The trays b are for holding roll butter, and they consist of a frame, 9, having a central bar, h, and a number of transverse wires, '11, running from one side of the-tray to the other through the bar h. j j are muslin pockets suspended from the wires t, and are attached at their ends to the bar It and sides of the frame g. These pockets are semicircular in transverse section, and are secured by their upper edges only. G is a cover, hinged to the tray 1), and provided with the bar It and the transverse wires 1. A muslin cover, m, is attached to the wires and to the ends of the frame, leaving the end of each cover free to move up or down.
The box A may be of any desired size, and
provided with trays of either description, or it may contain a number of each. I
Butter to be shipped in this carrier or package, if in rolls, is wrapped in a damp cloth and laid in the pockets j. The cover of the tray is closed, and the tray put in the box. Others are added until the box is filled. If the butter is in prints it is wrapped in a damp cloth and placed in the circular pockets j, which are closed by the draw-string n. The rolls or prints cannot touch each other, and as they are held in place by the muslin pockets only they will arrive at their destination inas good condition as when shipped.
The wires, nails, and other metallic parts I of the package are made from material that will not corrode.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure 'by' Letters Patent--- The combination of the frame g, wires 5, pockets j, cover 0, wires l, muslin covers m, and the box A, substantially as set forth.
7 SAMUEL G. WILLIAMS.
