.IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-OVENS OR SUMMER-RANGES.
Specification forming part of vLetters Patent N o. 184,551, -dated November 21, 1876; application filed July 11, 1816.
4 To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN SHoURDs, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas- Oven or Summer-Range, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a rear perspective view of my improved gas-oven. Fig. 2 is a front view ot' the same, showing the interior thereof, and the surrounding brick-work or wall.
lThe present invention relates to certain improvements in that class of ovens or summerranges commonly known as gas-ovens, because the draft, coal-gas, 8vo., from the re can be caused to pass through the oven when the lids in the bottom plate thereof are removed.
The invention consists in a summer-range in which ,the side thirdsof its top plate are inclined atan angle of about forty-five degrees, and its central third is tlat, and is provided with an angular brick-work; in the upright openings and dampers formed in the upper parts of the side plates of a summerrange, above the lower edges ot' the inclined side parts of the top plate; and in the flue formed upon the rear plate of a summer-range, the hinged damper, and the sliding damper, in connection with an opening formed in the upper part of the back plate, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the front plate, which projects at the sides and top to rest against the brick Walls that inclose the oven. B are the side plates, in the upper parts of which are formed openings, closed by vertical dampers b. G'is the top plate. lThe end parts of each, for onethird the width of the oven, are inclined at an angle of forty-tive degrees, and their side edges are united with the side plates B, just below the dampers b. The central third ot' the top plate C is flat, and upon it is built a brickwork, D, running to an angle,I so that any dirt that may fall' upon the top of the oven may slide down through the side dampers b', and fall through the side fines into the space below the bottom plate, and can be raked into the tire. E is the back plate, to the middle part of which are attached two .In the flue F', just above the opening into the oven, is placed a damper, f2, which may be drawn into a recess left to receive it between the at part of the top plate C and the brickwork D. .The dampers f1 f2 are operated. by rods extending out to the front of the oven. When the tire is being raked the damper f2 is drawn forward and the damper f1 is raised,
to allow the ne dust to pass up through the flue F to the chimney. When the oven is to be used, the damper f1 is lowered to close the flue F', the damper f2 is adjusted as required, and the side dampers b are opened.
The dust-due begins at an opening in the rear side ot' ash-pit, and continues through the brick-work, behind the rear of recham ber, and connects with the ue under bottom plate. It also has an opening from-the space between the top of hre-chamber and bottom plate, in order to take from rechamber and ash-pit the dust that arises when the iire is raked. The damper of this dustue is opened, and the opening in the flue from oven at the same time closed, so as to ai'ord aclear passage from ash-pit over thetop about forty-live degrees, and its central third is flat and horizontal, and is provided with an angular brick-work, D, substantially as herein shown and described. l
2. The upright openings and dampers b',
1. A summer-range in which theside thirds A. of its top plate C are inclined at an angle of formed in the upper parts of the side plates an opening formed in the upper part of the B of a summer-range, above the lower edges back plate E, substantially as herein shown of the inclined side parts of the top plate G, and described,
substantially as herein shown and described. BENJAMIN SHOURDS.
3. The ue F', formed upon the rear plate Witnesses: of a summer-range, the hinged damper f1, THOMAS WELTY,
and the sliding damper f2, in connection with J. E. WELTY.`
