ashesfrom falling on the floor and sparks y from dropping, thus avoiding any danger of. lu
pact devicein which various accessories such y as matches" maybe conveniently carrieohin addition to the use of a container for ashes. i3 To the attainment of these and other objects which will appear 'as thedescription proceeds,v reference `may be made to theacd companying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device; JY Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation; V Fig. 4: is a sectional elevation on the line 4:-4 of Fig. 2; and V Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the cigarette il' holding element.
Referring specifically to the ldrawings in which like reference numerals represent like i parts7 it will be observed that the device consists of a body 1() havinga mouth piece 11, removably attached as at 12 to the body. Supported within the upper portion of the body, and in alignment with the mouth piece is a cage or grate 13 adapted to support a cigarette C. rIhe cage will preferably beheld 3L' in position by means of ears 14 which may be riveted or otherwise suitably connected as at 15 to the holder 10. A clean-out door 16 for. the removal of ashes may be hinged at the bottom of the holder and a similar door 17 493 for the `reception of burned matches may be located at the forward portion of the holder. These doors may be hingedly attached to the body portion 10 and provided with spring n latches 18 and 19 respectively to hold same closed. i i
The top of the holder may be provided with a hinged closure 2O having a latch 21.V The forwardend of this closure preferably conn r sists of a downwardly Aextending perforated "ya flange 22 having a spring pressed closure por- A further object proposes the use of a com# @bacco ashes.
tion 23 depending therefrom. The perforations 22 act as draft holes when the cigarette isbeing smoked and the closure 23 may be opened to permit lighting of the cigarette.
A chain or cord 2/l is desirably connected to the holder to function as a neck chain or vest chain whenthe. device is not beingused.
Having thus described the invention the use andoperation thereof will be readily ap-` lparent, rthe lid 2O is raised and cigarette inserted in the cage or grate 13, the lid being closed toretainsame in position. rl`he cigarette is then lighted after opening the closure 23, and the burned match placed in the body 10 `through the opening 1'?. ils the cigarette burns any ashes or sp arkstherefrom will drop into the interior of the body 10 as indicated by the ashes and matches 25 inhig. e.
` Ordinarily the cigarette will burn coni pletely to its end due to the fact that it is resting on an open grate, but obviously if same does not burn completely it can be removed at any time by raising the lid 20.
Itwill be evident that variations in the above structure and in the shape thereof are possible, for example, either of the clean-out doors 161er the opening for matches at 17 or both may be omitted, in which latter event ashes may be removed by turning the holder upside down assuming; however, that no matches have been placed within the holder. It is also conceivable that the closure or lid 20 may be omitted and the cigarette held in place in the cage in any conventional manner, with its butt-endadjacent the mouthpiece 11.` It is also'contemplated that the structure may be adapted to the use of cigars or tobacco cartridges thus forming in effect av variation of pipe.
"One modification ofthe foregoing structure lwhich might readily fall within the scope of the present invention would be the formation of a compartment adjacent the opening 17, in which matches, either live or burnt might be placed,` and thus the dbris in the bodyl() would be confined solely to to- `If live matches are 'carried in suchV a compartment, a scratcher therefor could be secured as by pasting to the side of the body `10`.f
It is clear that the entire device may be made of any material, light in weight so that the entire structure will weigh no more and be no larger in size than a conventional pipe.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A device of the character described, comprising a body member having a recess to receive ashes, a grate for retaining a cigarette thereabove, and a mouth-piece in alignment with said grate.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a body member having a recess to receive ashes, a grate for retaining a cigarette thereabove, and a mouth-piece in alignment with said grate, and a closure for said recess disposed above said grate thereby to retain the cigarette in position.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a body member having a recess to receive ashes, a grate for retaining a cigarette thereabove, with said grate, and a closure for said recess disposed above said grate thereby to retain the cigarette in position, and a pivoted closure at the outer end of said recess affording access to said cigarette, for lighting purposes.
et. A device of the character comprising a. body member having a recess to receive ashes, a grate for retaining a cigarette thereabove, and a mouth-piece in alignment with said grate, and a clean out door in said body member through which ashes from said body member may be removed.
5. A device of the character described, comprising` a hollow body member, a closure extending along the top thereof, a grate eX- tending within the top portion thereof below said closure, a mouth-piece at one end of saidv body in alignment with said grate and a perforated wall at the other end of said body in alignment with said grate and mouthpiece, the lower portion of said body member forming a receptacle for ashes, and a cleanout door at the bottom of said member.
G. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member, a closure extending along the top thereof, a Lgrate eX- tending within the top portion thereof below said closure, a mouth-piece at one end of said body in alignment with said grate and a perforated wall at the other end of said body in alignment with said grate and mouthpiece, the lower portion of said body member forming a receptacle for ashes, said member below said perforated wall having an opening for the reception of matches.
7. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member, a closure extending along the top thereof, a grate eX- tending within the top portion thereof below y said closure, a mouth-piece at one endr of said body in alignment withsaid. grate and a perforated wall at the other end of said and a mouth-piece in alignment described,
body in alignment with said grate and mouthiece, the lower portion of said body member orming a receptacle for ashes, said member below said perforated wall having an opening for the reception of matches and a eleanont door at the bottom of said member.
8. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member, a closure extending along the top thereof, a grate eX- tending within the top portion thereof below said closure, a mouth-.piece at one end of said body in alignment with said grate and a perforated wall at the other end of said body in alignment with said grate and mouthpiece, and a pivoted closure at the outer end of said body member affording access to said cigarette below said perforations for lighting purposes.
9. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member having an opening for the reception of cigarettes at the top thereof, means to support the cigarette therein, a closure for said opening, a mouthpiece on said member communicating with the interior thereof, and means havingan opening for intake of air tor said member, a pivoted closure at the outer end of said body member affording access to said cigarette for lighting purposes, the portion of said mem ber below said cigarette supporting means forming a receptacle for ashes.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
