Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the base of a form of grinding and polishing stand having arms 11 upstanding from the ends thereof. Removably secured adjustably mounted cap bearings 12 carried upon the upper portions of the arms 11 are internally threaded, as at 13, for adjustable connection with the thrust sleeves 14 of a bearing construction having its inner portion or section 15 abutting a shoulder or stop 16 upon a mandrel shaft 17 Said shaft projects outwardly an appreciable distance from the bearings to accommodate a grinding disk or wheel, such as indicated at 18, a bufiing wheel or scratching brush, not shown. A pulley 19 being carried upon the mandrel shaft 17 in oppositelydisposed relation to that of the grinding wheel or disk 18 forthe accommodation of a strap or belt from a motor or lineshaft. All of the above is of the usual and well known construction incident to that of the type of machine described and formsno part of the present application for Letters Patent but is merely mentioned for the purpose of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages of the present invention.

The invention contemplates the provision as of an adaptor sleeve 20 projecting for an appreciable portion of its length within the cap bearing 12 and threadedly engaged therewith. After the cap bearing has been secured in place, binding action will be set up and the bearing 14 and adaptor sleeve 20 will be lockingly retained against rotation. A washer 21 receivable upon the outwardly projecting portion of the adaptor sleeve 20 and abutting the adjacent side of the immediate. leg 11 and cap bearing 12 therefor, is provided with ears 22 outwardly projecting in the manner shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The band, mentioned in the foregoing and as indicated at 23, is split to provide a gap or opening 24 through which appropriate portions of the scratch brush, bufiing wheel, or grinding disk may be exposed and to facilitate projecting of the work therethrough for contacting engagement with the form of tool rotating within the confines of the band. Arm members 25 are secured to the inner side edge of the band in the manner shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, that is, immediately adjacent the ends of the band and projecting in spaced parallelism therefrom whereby the aforementioned degree of clearance between the ends of the band will not be impaired.

The guard for the band has the parallel legs 27 thereof disposed in overlapping relation with the outer sides of the arms 25 whereby the solid horizontally offset extremity to be hereinafter designated by the refer ence numeral 28 is designed to regulate the amount of clearance or gap between the ends of the split hand without requiring the vdiminishing of the initial diameter of the band. The guard 28 may be also employed as a form of rest upon Which tools may be disposed for sharpening and other operations. A nut 29,tl1readedly mounted upon the outermost projecting end of the eXteriorly threaded adaptor sleeve 20 and abutting the inner sides of the arm members 25 is provided With a plurality of openings 30 in the Wrench engaging faces thereof for the accommodation of a nail, the shank of scribing tool and the like whereby the entire attachment may be adjusted about the form of tool carried upon the mandrel shaft. This means of adjustment is necessary in view of the lack of space necessary for the accommodation of a Wrench to eliect such adjustment.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, What is claimed is An emery Wheel attachment comprising a split band, an adaptor supported upon the Wheel mounting, a guard having a portion extended over the split ends of the band to regulate the amount of Wheel exposure, arms carried by the band and guard and extended about said adaptor, a Washer receivable upon the adaptor having ears projecting therefrom and restricting excessive movement of said guard and abutting the arms of the band, and an adjusting element mounted upon the adaptor having engagement With the arm members of the band to lockingly retain the band and guard against accidental displacement.
