Description
Feb; 9, 1932. L. F. JULIEN WEATHER STRIP Filed May 9, 1929 ATTORNEY.
Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES LOUIS JULIEN, or ionraonr, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 'ro cmnnnmn METAL' PATENT oFFic WEATHER STRIP Application filed May 9, 1929. Serial No. 361,586..
with the frame as the casement is closed.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a Weatherstrip adapted for application to a steel casement and secured to the steel casement by a series of spring metal clips.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Weatherstrip formed of spring metal and provided with achannel fitting over the edge of the casement, the strip being provided with a yieldable spring metal flange adapted for contact with, the window frame and the strip being held in position by a series of spring metal clips engaging over the strip and the easement frame.
These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a hinged steel casement equipped with my improved weatherstrip.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the weather-strip as it engages the window frame.
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the spring flange of the Weatherstrip placed under compression.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the Weatherstrip.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the securing clips.
The Weatherstrip, as shown inFig. 4, is formed of spring metal such as spring bronze or other metal of similar type and this sheet metal is formed to provide a U shaped channel 1 between the flange 2 and the portion 3 of the Weatherstrip. At the upper edge the portion 3 is rolled to provide a longitudinal head 4 and a spring metal contact flange 5 extends from the bead 4 and may be provided with a hemmed or return bent terminal edge 6 as'shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. In applying the Weatherstrip to the casement the U shaped channel 1 is fitted over the flange 7 of the casement and the clips 8 are clipped over the flange 7 and adjacent portion of the Weatherstrip to hold the Weatherstrip on the flange. As will be noted from Fig. 5 the inturned upper edge of each spring metal clip 8 is provided with teeth 9 engaging on the shoulder 10 of the casement and the inturned lower end 11 of the clip engages over the U channel of the Weatherstrip thus bindingly securing the Weatherstrip between the spring metal clips 8 and the flange 7.
In this position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4,- the spring contact flange 5 extends outwardly and as the easement is completely closed this spring'flange is compressed as shown in Fig. 3 thus sealing the space between the casement and the frame. Should the Weatherstrip be damaged it may be very readily removed and replaced and as no holes are required for attaching the casement may be equipped with weatherstrips very quickly and with very little trouble.
' From the foregoingdescription it becomes evident that the device is very simple and eflicient in operation, will not easily get out of order, may be very easily installed and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, whatl claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. The combination with a hinged steel casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip having a U shaped channel for engagement over the peripheral edge of the casement, one side of the channel extending above the other and having a longitudinal bead rolled therein, a spring metal flange extending at an angle from the bead and provided with a hemmed terminal edge, a series of spring metal clips engaging over the edge of the easement and overthe adjacent portion of the Weatherstrip to secure the Weatherstrip to the easement, the spring metal clips being C shaped in form and being provided wih teeth at the end engaging the casement.
2. The combination with a hinged steel casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip shaped to provide a channel to. receive the peripheral edge of the easement, a series of spring metal clips bindingly securing the Weatherstrip to the easement, the Weatherstrip at one side of the channel being shaped to provide a longitudinal bead, and a flange extending from the said bead and arranged to engage the frame as the casement is closed.
3. The combination with a hinged steel ,casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip shaped to receive the peripheral edge of the casement, a series of spring metal clips engaging the easement and Weatherstrip to secure the Weatherstrip thereto and a spring metal flange extending at an angle from the Weatherstrip and arranged to engage the frame as the casement is closed.
4. The combination with a hinged steel casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip fitting over a port-ion of the steel casement, a series of spring metal clips securing the weatherstrip to the casement, and a spring metal flange extending at an angle fromthe weatherstrip and arranged to engage the frame'as the casement is closed.
5. The combination with a hinged casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip provided with a U shaped channel for engagement over the edge of the casement, the said strip being provided with a spring metal flange extending at an angle therefrom, and a series of spring metal clips securing the weatherstrip to the casement.
6. The combination with a hinged casement and frame, of a Weatherstrip provided 4 with a spring metal flange extending at an angle therefrom, and a series of spring metal clips securing the Weatherstrip to the casement with the flange in position to engage the frame.
7. A weather strip comprising a sheet meta1 member bent to the form of a U in cross section, the legs of which are in practically parallel relation, one of which is shorter than the other, and providing a channel to receive an edge of asash, an integral spring metal flange extending outwardly from the edge of the longer leg, and a yieldable clip forengaging the U portion to hold the strip on the sash.
