Description

. M. PADDEN.
REVERSIBLE LATCH.
MAW E 55E 5. Mvxqlma- TTE STATES PATENT MARTIN PADDEN, OF PITTSBURG, PA., ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL H. JAGOBUS.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE LVATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,420, dated November 14, 1876; application filed l October 21, 1876.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PADDEN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Reversible Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referenee being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the latch, the top plate being removed, showing the position of the different parts when in operation. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the position of the parts of the latch when they are ready for reversal and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the yoke and sliding stop.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
My invention relates to that classl of knoblatches usually known as reversible latches,7 where the position ofthe latch-bolt may be changed, so as to place the bevel to suit either a right or left hand door; audit consists in combining with the slotted yoke a slide, held in place by, and working in,vthe slot of the yoke, said slide being provided with a recess to receive the head of the bolt, and being capable of sufcient motion to allow the square portion of the bolt to be Withdrawn from the case and be reversed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The latch-case A is of the usual or any known construction, provided with the hub a, working in the yoke B. The arms b b of the yoke B are attached together by the brace c, in which is cutthe recess d, to receive the shank of the bolt. In the slot formed by the arms b b I place the slide E, capable of motion in the slot, said slide being provided With the recess e, for the reception of the head h of the bolt H. The said bolt is of the usual construction in reversible latches, being provided with the cylindrical stem f back of the square portion, and the shank i, of less diameter, said shank terminating in the vhead h. The shank rests in the recess d of lthe brace c, and the head h in the recess e of the slide. The spring s upon the shank i rests between the brace c and slide E, holding the several parts in their relative positions when the lock is in use. Attached to the slide E, and passingunder the arm b, is the arm 1c, which extends beside the arm b to the edge ofthe screw-hole l. The spring m, working against the yoke B, presses the latch forward in the usual manner.
When the latch is in use the several parts occupy the positions shown in Fig. 1. When the latch-bolt is to be Withdrawn, the hub a is turned in the yoke B, and the slide E, held against the end of the yoke by the spring s, withdraws the boltH. When the latch is to be reversed, the bolt H is drawn out of the case, the spring s being contracted, and permitting the slide to move in the slot suciently to free the square portion of the bolt from the case, when it can be reversed. When the latch is being reversed, the slide-ar1n 7c, moving with the slide E, passes over the screw-hole l. After the latch is attached to the door, the attaching-screw, passing through said hole, prevents the advance ofthe slide, and at the same time precludes the possibility of the reversal of the latch. y What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In areversible latch, the combination of the v slotted yoke, the slide, held in place by, and
Working in, the slot of the yoke, and theswivelng bolt, substantially as and for the purpose'specilied.
In testimony whereof I, the said MARTIN PADDEN, have hereunto set my hand.
