DELAWARE ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
A CORPORATION OF- SOUND BOX SUPPORT AND 'USED NEEDLE RECEPTACLE ipplication filed lcbruary lll, i323. erial No. 341,59@
My invention relates to a member or receptacle utilizable as a support for a sound reproducing device and/or a container or passage for the reception ol used or worn talking machine or phonograph needles.
ln accordance with my invention, a' member of resilient material forms a support i'or a talking machine or phonograph sound reproducing device when it is moved from a position above the record supporting turn table; more particularly, said member ot re'- silient material constitutes a receptacle tor the reception oi a part of said sound reproducing device.
Further in accordance with my invention, the aforesaid receptacle comprises a plurality of compartments, one receiving the aforesaid sound reproducing device and another receiving worn or used needles after disengagement -rom said device.
Further in accordance with my invention, the aforesaid receptacle is lormed of suitable resilient material and is detachably carried by the motor board, or equivalent, of a talking machine or phonograph.
Further in accordance with my invention, the pivoted cover of a portable talking 'machine or phonograph ositively retains the sound reproducing device thereof in engagement with a member oi resilient material to l prevent damage to the parts during transportion ot `said talking machine or phonograph.
lily invention resides in the article, combination and character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one ot the forms my article or combination may take, reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings in which t Figure l is a perspective view of a talking machine or phonograph having associated therewith a receptacle constructed in accor-df ance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, of the device ot Fig. 1 but with the easing cover in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, taken at right angles to the shovving of Fig. 2.
features of construction of the Fig. l is a perspective view of a comhined sound box and used needle receptacle.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle of Fig. 4.
lln accordance With my invention, there is provided. a receptacle or member which receives or supports-a sound vice or instrumentality and which may comprise a. chamber or passage for used or worn talking machine or phonograph needles. illustrated herein, said receptacle or member is associated with a talking machine or phonograph of the portable type, although my invention is not to be limited to such portable mechanism.
is illustrative of one form of a portable talking machine or phonograph with which a receptacle or member constructed in accordance with my invention may thus be as sociated,
having .a cover B pivoted or hinged thereto. frs is usual in the art, said receptacle-lille hase A. contains a'motive device, not shown, together with suitable horn Structure, not shown, @ver-lying the latter is a transverse member or motor board C supported in the example shown, by the y hanged section in which the side Wall structure of the base A., terminates., l
Ars shown in Fig. l, a turntable D overlies the motor hoard C which carries suitable structure E supporting a tone arm or taper tube lli tor oscillatory movement The latter may terminate in the usual goose neck G which is pivoted therto and which, at its otherwise tree end, carries a sound reproducing device or instrumentality, as a sound box lll of any desired type which comprises a diaphragm, not shown, adapted to be actuated hy a needle arm or stylus bar l to which a needle or stylus J may be detachably secured by a clamping screw K, or equivalent. The tone arm or taper tube E", at its end adjacent its supporting structure E, discharges sound Waves into the aforesaid horn structure reproducing del there is shown a receptaclelihe base Y bv which said sound Waves are amplified and from Which they emerge through an opening in the aforesaid motor board C to the rear oi" the turntable D.
The aforesaid cover B may have pivoted' lll@ I thereto a receptacle L receiving a plurality of SeV tember 1, 1928.
talking machine or phonograph ofthe character hereinafter described is portable, particularly in the sense that a plurality of records may be disposed or stored Within the receptacle L and the cover B moved to and temporarily retained in closed position. To the end last named, there may be utilized v suitable mechanism which is herein shown as comprising a member l) carried by the front wall of the base A and having pivoted thereto a latch Q c'oactable with a lug or member R carried by the cover B. "llhus, with the cover B in closed position, the free end of the latch Q may belswung upwardly from the position illustrated in Fig. l to thereby engage the luv R to temporarily lock said cover B in said closed position.
Whenthus transporting the talking machine or phonograph from place to place, it is desirable that the .aforesaid tone' arm l" and sound box l-l be restrained from movement interiorly of the closed casing; should this not be done, damage may result to some of the parts and particularly to the delicate ound reproducing mechanism of the sound ln accordance with my invention, the aforesaid receptacle or member for receiving or supporting the sound reproducing device H to thereby prevent undesired movement thereof may be and preferably is carried by the motor board C. lf so, said motor board- C may have or comprise a shallow, circular pocket or well formed by a member C1 depressed below the motor board level and forming with said motor board a circular ring or flange C2. lin said pocket or well, the aforesaid receptacle or member 1 is disposed, preferably in such mannerv as to be readily or easily disengaged therefrom.
The receptacle or member 1, preferably, is circular in configuration and the lowermost end thereof, Figs. 2 and 3, comprises a circular bead or rim 2 by'which the'lower trans- -verse section 3 of said receptacle 1 is spaced from the member C1. rl`he lower portion of receptacle 1, preferably, is of smaller diameter thanthe upper portion thereof and itis this lower portion which is snugly received in the aforesaid pocket or well formed by member C1. As just stated, the upper portion of member 1 is of larger diameter than Ais the lower portion thereof and the surface connecting said portions forms a circular deaeeaeaa f of compartment 4 may resemble that of a halfcirclc or a slightly larger ortion of a circle. aid compartment l is ounded, in part by a substantially vertical wall 6, Figs. 3 and 4, and spaced therefrom is a tapered rib or projection 7 having a surfaceS substantially parallel with the aforesaid wall 6. @ne ortion of the peripheral edge of the sound 0X H lits within the space defined by the wall 6 and surface 8; `the distance therebetween, therefore, should correspond ysubstantially with the thickness of said peripheral'edge of the sound box H.
The compartment or 'passage 5 is adapted as a container for used or worn needles after disengagement thereof from the stylus bar l. As illustrated particularly in Figs. 3 Vand 5, said used or Worn needles are passed into the compartment 5 through an opening 9 in a transverse .wall lforming the top or upper f boundary of'said compartment 5, the iirst'nee dles thus deposited usually passing through the open lower end of compartment and coming to rest upon the member C1, some of said needles, perhaps, finding their way beneath the transverse section, 3 of the member 1. lf desired, the upper surface of wall 10 may be flared as well indicated in Fig. d to facilitate the passage of worn or used needles Iinto the opening 9.
When desired, the member or receptacle 1 may readily be disengaged or removed from the well or compartment formed by the member C1. dien thus disengaged, all of the used needles will be found upon said member C1 from which they may easily be removed.
The receptacle or member 1 usually is formed from resilient material, `as cork or, and preferably,'rubber of medium hardness. When constructed of such material, said receptacle or member 1, due to the action of said resilient material, is snugly retained Within the pocket or well formed by the member C1. Furthermore, when the sound box H is disposed within the compartment d oflil@ lll
thereb increase the pressure with which said sound oxV H engages the wall structure of the member v1. Since the latter, ordinarily, is constructed of resilient matter, as described above, the sound box H and tone arm F are temporarily retained in a fixed position within the closed casing and, therefore, the latter 'may be carried from place to place as desired Without fear of damaging any ot the parts.
li' desired, a metallic ring 11 may circumscribe or enclose part of the Wall structure ot the member l. This ring 11, to some extent, reinforces or supports said member or receptacle l although, usually, its purpose is little more than an ornamental one.
As herein illustrated, the member` or receptacle l. is an integral unit preferably molded from rubber. However, fromA some as pects of my invention, said member or receptacle l need not be integrally termed. '.lhus, under some circumstances, a resilient support for the sound box may be utilized in lieu oit a compartment for a part thereof and, it desired, the sound box support or receptacle may be separately formed and separately positioned from the container for the used or Worn needles.
