Description

Apr. 10, 1923.
s. HASKELL PHONOGRAPH DOLL Filed 001;. 25. 1922 11v VENTOR A TTORNE Y Patented Apr. 10 1923'.
' lhddltmz SAMUEL HASKELL, or BROOKLYN, new YORK.
P HONOGRAPH DOLL.
Application filed October 23, 1922.. Serial No. 596,364.
To all to ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUELYHASKELL, a citizen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, Kings County, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonograph Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to talking dolls and in particular to a doll wherein is contained a record and its operating mechanism.
An object of the invention is to provide a doll more particularly in the form of a toy which will, together with a base, embody a small phonograph upon which may be playedminiature records, these records having any short selection or story thereon and which when being played will give the impression of 'a talking doll.
Further objects and features of improve-- ment will hereinafter appear as the specification progresses.
Referring to the drawing, wherein one embodiment of my inventionis illustrated Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a doll and pedestal therefor partly in section and showing the position of the sound projecting member relatively to the doll body ;v
Fig. 2 is a front view of the device as illustrated inFig. l, the same also being in partial section; and i Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the reproducing member which translates the vibrating motions of the needle into sound.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein a doll has been shown rather for illustration than for limitation as to the figure which might be used, 5 indicates a doll of hollow construction, which is fixed to stand upright on a base, the, [latter comprising a cabinet 6 which has suitably hinged thereto as at 7 a lid member 8. The lid is maintained in closed position by a releasable catch 9 at the front of the-cabinet. Within the body of the doll and disposed centrally thereof is a horn 10 made of a verystifi' paper or metal which embodies vibratory qualities. The horn is pivotally held, adjacent its upper end, relatively to the doll body by the pins 11, so that its lower end may swing freely backwardly and forwardly between the legs of the doll. A cut out 1 2 embracing a portion of the inside of the dolls legs, provides a space in which the lowerend of the horn 10 may oscillate. The
extreme lower end of the horn is open and thewall thereof is punched at two places to receive the bent metallic re-producer 13, the
projected portion 1 1 of which is dispdsed within the horn and bears against the diametrically opposite part of the horn wall. The reproducer is provided at its lower end with punched clips 15 which retain a sound translating member or sound needle 16 of the type used in talking machines. The upperend of the reproducer is provided with a lip 17 which prevents accidental withdrawal of the same from the horn.
The needle rests upon a record 18 which may be a miniature and be rotated on the turntable 19 disposed within the cabinet 6 and on the end of a spindle which constitutes part of a spring motor operated mechanism, the spindle being rotated by a gear train which isacted upon by the unwinding of a spring 20. The spring is wound by a key 21 which is disposed exteriorly of the cabinet 6 and its too, rapid unwinding movement is controlled by a governor 22 which acts as a load to allow of a normal turning speed of the record 18.
Therecords which will be'made especially for the device will have their outer groove approximately astandard distance fromthe center, so that when the cabinet cover is record when the cover of the cabinet is closed. The dolls head is provided with a perforated plate 24 through which the sounds emitting from the horn may pass.
' While I have described and illustrated one form of my invention, it is to be understood that modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the claims.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. In a device of the character described, a cabinet containing a, sound producing mechanism, a support associated with said cabinet having a cut out portion, and a sound projecting memberv extending from within said cabinet and pivotally mounted in said support so as to swing back and forth through its out out portion.
2. In a'device of the character described, a' cabinet containing a sound producing mechanism, a sound projecting member extending therefrom, a support for said sound projecting member having a cut out portion, and means for eccentrically pivoting said sound projecting member to said support whereby the sound projecting member may swing through said out out portion of the support to starting position within the cabinet.
3. In a device of the character described, a cabinet containing a sound producing mechanism, a hollow support associated with said cabinet, a sound projecting member extending from within said cabinet to within said support, and a pivotal connectionbetween .said sound projecting member and said support 4, In a device of the character described, a cabinet containing a sound producing mechanism, a hollow support associated with said cabinet, a sound projecting member extending within said support, and means for eccentrically pivoting said sound projecting member to said support internally thereof whereby the sound projecting member may swing to starting position.
5. In a device of the character described, a cabinet containing a sound producing mechanism, a support, a sound. projecting member, and an eccentric pivotal connection between the support and the sound projecting member whereby the latter may assume its starting position when lifted from the record.
6. In a device of the character described, a a cabinet containing a sound producin mechanism, acover for said cabinet hinge thereto, a support on said cover, said cover having an opening therein, a sound projecting member extending'through said opening, and an eccentric pivotal connection between the support and the sound projecting member whereby the latter may automatically assume its starting position when the cover is raised to liftsaid sound projecting member from the record.
7. In combination with a phonograph horn, a vibration transmitting device comprising a portion having means for securing same to the horn wall and a portion adapted to contact with said wall whereby vibrations are transmitted to the horn.
8. In combination with an amplifier of a phonograph, a vibration transmitting device having a portion for attachment to the amplifier, a portion having a stylus associated therewith, and an intermediate portion offset from said two first mentioned portions and adapted to contactwith the amplifier whereby vibrations are transmitted thereto.
