To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRIsTorH ADOLF GIEBELER-WANKE, citizen of Germany, and
' will be simple and practical in construction,
will not readily get out of order and may be operated with facility. Further objects are to provide such a doll which will be nat ural and life-like in appearance and in the production of the human voice, the mechanical parts being so arranged, and the superficial parts being such that the attractiveness and delicateness of the doll are in no way sacrificed. To this end I propose to provide in the present embodiment. a
head formed of die cast aluminum, this head being such that it provides superior acoustic qualities, and at the same time constitutes a substantial support for the sound producing parts, and I further propose to provide a Wooden or'aluminum body portion within" which a motor may be suitably supported. It is an object of one embodiment of'my invention to provide ahead which may be moved relatlvely to the body without disturbing the functioning ofthe sound producwith the sound producing parts, a ,movable lowerjaw adapted to simulate the action of the human mouth when talking or sing- 1 Figure 1 is a vertical sectional viewof a.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to" 3'thereof, the body of the doll is formed of two halves 10 and 11 preferably of wood and glued together, the said body beingprovided at its upper end with a neck opening 12, slightly tapered and having anannular recess 13 surrounding the same in its upper end. The body may, if desired, be formed of aluminum,
and .fits snugly into the neck opening of the body, an annular flange 19 being provided thereon which fits into the recess 13, the head being rigidly secured to the body p I by means of screws 20 passing through the ing parts, and also to' provide in connection said flange intothe body.
' Within the body there is mounted a motor which maybe of any. suitable type, and in the present embodiment comprises upper and lower supporting plates 21 and 22 connected by upright bars'23, 24 and 25 and provided with lugs 26 engaging the inner surfaceiof the body and secured thereto by bolts and nuts 27, a tie rod 28 passing through the opposed lugs of the plate 22 engaging the sides of the body, the said tie rod rigidly supporting the motor and securely holding the two' halves of the body together. An upright shaft 29 is journaled between the plates and is adapted to be turned from the H power of the spring contained within the casing 30 by means ofa train of gears 31, 32, 33 and 34;, a worm gear 35 mounted on the shaft 29 engaging the worm 36 of the governor 37 which regulates the rotation of the said shaft 29. The spring may be wound by means ofa shaft 38 having 9. pi 'on 39 at its inner end engaging a crown gear 40 connected to the spring in the usual manner, the outer end of the said shaft being disposed in an opening 41 of the body and adapted to be engaged by a crank handle 42. The disk 43 of the governor is adapted to be engaged by a. stop lever 44 pivoted upon the plate 21 at 45 and adapted to be adjusted by means of a pivoted plate 46 having an inclined slot 47 engaging a lug 48 of the said lever, the said plate being adjustable by means of a rod 49 having a threaded portion 50 engaging a stud 51 provided upon the upper side of the plate 21, the said rod terminating at its outer projecting end in a knurled head 52.
To the upper projecting end of the shaft 29 there is pinned the hub of an upright shaft 53 extending upwardly through the body and neck into the head, where it is provided at its upper end with a circular plate 54 constituting a support for the disk record 55, the reduced extremity 56 of the said shaft extending through the said plate and adapted to position the record thereon.
Within the neck there is provideda bearing 57 preferably formed integral with the head and adapted to maintain the shaft 53 in upright alinement, The upper open end of the 30 head is circular and freely admits of the insertion and removal of the record.
An opening 58 is formed at the rear of the head forming a sound outletvfor the enlar ed end of the sound amplifying horn mem er 59 disposed within the head and pivotally and hingedly supported upon lugs 60 and 61 formed at the upper edge of the head above the said opening, a block 62 being hingedly mounted between the said lugs by means of a transverse pin 63 and supporting the vertically disposed pivot rod64 extendin through the said horn member.
The reduced end of the horn is connected to the flange 65 of a laterally disposed sound reproducing box 66 within which is supported a diaphragm 67 a transverse vibratorymember 68 being connected to the diaphragm at its inner end and hinged at its outer end to the box as at 69, and provided intermediately its ends with a needle support 70 to which is removably secured the needle 71 adapted to engage the grooves of the record.
The wig 72 which is preferably formed of perforated aluminum adapted to-permit of the free outlet of sound, is hingedly mounted upon lugs 73 formed at the front of the head, the said wig constituting a cover for the upper and rear openings of the head.
' The hair of the wig is secured to the aluminum base in any suitable manner.
Whenit is desired to renew a record or to start the operation of the doll, the wig may be swung upwardly exposing the interlor of the head, while the horn member and sound 65 box may beswungput of the head about their hinged support. A stop screw 7 4 is disposed at the rear of the head and is adapted to engage the periphery of the plate 54: to stop the rotation thereof by engagement therewith and to permit of its rotation when disengaged, this' stop screw being conveniently accessible and normally hidden from View beneath the hair of the doll. An opening 90 is provided in the back of the body portion and is provided with a mesh-like covering 91, to permitof the distribution of the sound.
In Fig. 4, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of construction in which the head is movable relatively to the body, the neck 75 being a partial sphere at its lower end and fitting into a similarly shaped socket 76 of the body. The shaft 77 extendposed in an opening 83 being pivotally mounted upon a transverse shaft 84 about which the same may have swinging movement and thereby simulate the movement of the human mouth in talking or singing. The side portions of the member 82 are connected rearwardly of the shaft 84 by means of a transverse bar 85 provided centrally with a roller 86 engaging a lateral cam 87 disposed upon the shaft extension 79 and having its upper surface corrugated and engaged by the roller 86, rotation of the said cam adapted to cause oscillation of the chin member 82. The roller 86 is held in engagement with the cam by means of a spring 88 tiedbetween the transverse bar 85 and the bearing 80. It will be understood that if desired, a movable lower jaw of this type, may be provided in connection with the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3. 1
With my improvements, a doll is provided which may be made to sing or talk in exact reproduction of the human voice. construction is such that superior acoustic qualities are provided and a very life-like rendition of the voice may be produced.
