CLARENCE J. HEIDE, OF GOLETA, ILLINQIS Y rmaoron GUARD Application filed November 22, 1930. serial No. 497,495.
The present invention relates to a guard for tractors and has for its prime object to provide a device to keep the down corn away from the tractor wheels particularly when the tractor is being used with an ensilage harvester and corn picker.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a guard of this nature which is simple in its construction, easy to manipulate, strong and durable, thoroughlyeificient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. V
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in thecombination and arrangement of parts as will behere- .inafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tractor showing my improved guard thereon,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, Figure 3 is a plan view of the frontaxle of the tractor and a V-shaped radius rod showing plate attached thereto,
Figure 4 is a sectional View through the plate taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a sectional view through the telescopically associated rods showing the attachment to the shield,
I Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 77 of Figure 6, v
Figure 8 is an elevation of the shield frame. Figure 9 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 9-9 of Figure 1,
ing the elongated U-bolt engaged in the strap loop,
Figure 11 is a vertical section taken sub- 7 e5 stantially on the line 11-11 of Figure 1, and
spaced parallel coextensive lower rails 5 and.
spaced parallel coextensive upper rails 6 at a Figure 10 is a detail view of the upper rear end of the top rail of the shield frame show slight angle to the rails 5.
the rails 5 an d:6.- A bar8 inclines downwardly and forward-lyand is attached between'the forward ends :of the rails 5and6. Shield 7 Across bar v9 is disposed between intermediate portions of ner railifi and is looselyengaged with a-strap f :loop 16 fastened to the top ef-the fender 14. A rod 16 has one end fastened in an opening in the bar?) to rock on a pin 17. This rod '16- telescopes into hollow rod 18 having a T- conpling l9ion its end through which extends a U-fbOltQO fastened in thelcenter o'f the plate 21; The plate 21 is fastened on the intermediate portion ofradius rods 22 by means of .U-bolts 23. This radius rod 22 is conventional-and extends rearward ly from the front M axle 214 of the tractor. V i
i A spring 25 is engaged'with the shield and is engagedwitih :thelradius rod by means of a chain 26 to hold-the shield inwardly but when the front wheels of the tractor are moved from the full'line positionito the dotted line position of Figure :2 it will be seen that the shield may be moved outwardly against the tension of the spring thisbei'ng permitted by the telescopically associated rods 16 and 18 and by the play between the U-bolt 15.. and the strap loop 16.
Any suitable'means may be used for the front end of this shield so as to raise the shoe shown a bell crank lever 40 rockable on the frame of the tractor and having a suitable connection 41 with the shield. This bell crank lever 40 may be rocked by a chain 42 and a lever 43 the latter being in an accessible position.
It is thought that the constructiomoperation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof; 7
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of eXemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It is apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a tractor, of a shield to one side thereof, means for loosely mounting the rear end of the shield to the tractor, a pair of telescopically associated rods one attached to the tractor and the other attached to the shield, and a spring attached to the shield and to the tractor urging the shield toward the tractor.
2. In combination with a tractor, of a shield to one side thereof, means for loosely mounting the rear end of the shield to the tractor, a pair of telescopically associated rods one attached to the tractor and the other attached to the shield, and a spring attached to the shield and to the tractor urging the shield toward the tractor, said shield comprising a frame with a plate thereon, and a shoe at the lower forward corner thereof.
3. shield of the class described comprising a frame including a lower and an upper rail, a .plate across the rail, said rails extending rearwardly from the plate, means for loosely engaging the rear end of the bottom rail to the rear end of'a tractor fender and mean for loosely engaging the rear end of the upper rail to the top of said fender, a rod attached to an intermediate portion of the shield, a second rod telescoped over the first rod, a plate, means for hingedly mounting the second rod to the plate, and means for attaching the plate to the radius rod of the tractor.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CLARENCE J. HEIDE.
