provision of a device adapted for exhibitingfr one by one in succession for visual inspection respective advertising-displays or the like of a series, and combinedly dispensing simultaneously upon each such respective exhibition a useful or desired article or commodity.
My invention has for a further object the provision of such a device as that stated-in which the desire to possess the dispensed article or commodity offers orforms an incentive for effecting actuation of the display-exhibiting instrumentalities of the device.
My invention has for another object the provision of such a device in which the actuating-means of the dispensing instrumentalities of the device is so located relatively to the exhibited display as to substantially compel visual inspection thereof to obtain one of the dispensed articles.
My invention has for still further objects the provisionof such a device which may be inexpensively manufactured, which is simple and compact in construction, which is conveniently and readily operable, anvdfvvhich is Aefficient in the performance of its intended functions, and to improve generally upon devices of the class described. Y
And with the above and other objects'inV view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-- y Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a combined advertising and dispensing device embodying` my invention;" e i Figure 2 is a side view ofthe device; Figure 3 is a view of the device similar to that of Figure 1, the front cover of the del vice being shown, Ahowever, as swung into open position to expose the working parts;
Figure l is atransverse sectional vview of the device taken approximately -along the line iw-4, Figure .3;
Figure 5 is a verticalor longitudinal sec- 1929. Serial No. 355,303.
tional view of the device taken aproximately along the line 5-5, Figure 1;
Figure G is ardetail sectional view taken approximately along the line 6-6, Figure 3;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary frontal view of the portion of the device as shown-in Figure 6, but with the parts illustrated in a different position; and Y Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 but with the parts illustrated in the same relation as shown in Figure 6.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, the device'includes a suitable base 1,
mounted uponV which is an upstanding housing or shell 2 comprising in its upper portion an approximately tubular compartment 3, the frontal wall of the housing being formed by a cover or lidlhinged at its top margin, as at 5, for swingably exposing the interior of thehou'sing (Figure 3). Oppositely the tubular compartment 3 of the housing 2, the cover 4C has al window 6, preferably suitably glazed, as shown invFigure 1, for the visual exposition therethrough of suitable advertising-displays or the like,` as presently appearlng. i Y Y Disposed for rotation in the compartment 3, for registration of successive portions of its periphery with the window 6, is a rotatable cylinder or drum 7, preferably. supported on a shaft 8 journale'd through the side walls of the housing 2, one end of the shaft. 8 being axially vpresented from the housing and provided with a `preferably lrnurled disc 9 for the manual manipulation of the drum 7. i
OutstandingV from the periphery of the drum 7, is al plurality of suitably spaced T-strips 10 disposed longitudinally of the drum in an annular series for the reception ltherebetween of Vadvertising displays, such as posters or the like 11, as shown in Figure 1, the several displays, on rotation of the drum 7, being brought successively into registration with the window G.`
Carried by the drum '7 or its supporting shaft 8, is a latch or ratchet wheel 12 having an annular series of teeth 13 corresponde ing in number with the number of the displays 11 on the drum 7. Slidable through the frontal wall or cover 4 of the housing 2, is a manually operable plunger 14, extending from the inner or tooth-engaging end of which is a lateral finger 15 adapted for engagement with respective pins 16 corresponding in number with the number of the teeth 13 and presented endwisc from the drum 7 for-rotation therewith in a circular path concentric with and to one side of, but Outwardly from, the teeth 13, each latch-pin 16, however, being angularly disposed with respect to its adjacent tooth 13.
Normally, as when the plunger' 14 is in outwardly presented position, as illustrated in full lines in Figure 5 and in dotted lines in Figure 6, the finger lies in the annular path of the several pins 16 and through respective engagement with which prevents rotatory movement of the drum 7 in a forward direction or in the direction of the arrow shown.
However, on depression of the plunger 14 into the position thereof illustrated in full lines in Figure 6, the finger 15 is shifted inwardly of the compartment 8 out of the path of the respective pins 16, so as to freely permit forward rotatory movement of the drum 7, but as the drum 7 is so forwardly rotatorily actuated, the plunger 14 is automatically, through engagement with the respectiif'e cam-surfaces 18a disposed intermediate the several teeth 13, returned to normal outwardly presented position and its carried finger 15 replaced in movement retarding position in the annular line of travel of the pins 16. ln such manner and as the plunger 14 is so actuated, the drum 7 is operable in rotary steps to successively present or eXhibit the advertising-'displays or the like 11 one by one in succession in registration with the window 6 for visual observation, the several teeth 18 being adapted, when the plunger 14 is in depressed position, for engagement respectively with the plunger 14 to prevent rotatory movement of the drum 7 in a retrograde or rearward direction.
For providing an incentive for turning the drum 7 and thus successively presenting for visual examination the displays 11 carried thereby, an article dispensing device is associated with, and operable by, the display device for presenting to anyone who may operate the device a` reward for this effort. The latter may comprise any suitable advertising novelty or the like such as, for instance, books of matches 17 disposed in respective columns in a plurality of article-containing magazines 18 in the shell or housing 2, three such magazines being shown in the present embodiment, although there may be more or less than three such magazines, at the option of the person constructing the device.
Preferably journaled in the base 1 in operative adjacence to the lower end of the respective magazine 18, is a shaft 19, fixed upon which is an ejector comprising preferably a corresponding plurality of arms 2O disposed in annularly staggered relation and working through respective slots 21 in the lower wall of the respective magazines 18, said wall being, in the present instance, formed by the top of the base 1, for pushing engagement with the lowermost one of the respective columns of articles 17 in the magazines 18 to deliver, on rotation of the shaft 19, said articles outwardly through suitable respective slots 22 provided in the cover 4, as illustrated in Figure 5.
For observing the contents of the magazines 18, suitable sight-slots 23 are also provided in the cover 4 in registration with the respective magazines 18, and preferably each magazine 18 has a weight 24 guidably slidable in a vertical slot 25 in the rear wall of the magazine for feeding the respective articles 17 to the respective feed-slots 22, since frequently, as in the present instance, the articles 17 to be dispensed are light in weight and would not otherwise readily feed through the respective magazines 18.
The shaft 19 is operatively connected to the shaft 8 by any suitable motion transmitting means, such, as in the present instance, a sprocket chain 26 working over sprockets 27, 28, on the respective shafts 8, 19. Thus rotation of the shaft 8 will likewise rotate the shaft 19, the ratio of the sprockets 27, 28, and the arrangement of the arms 20, being such that an article 17 will be delivered or dispensed from one of the magazines 18 each time the drum 7 is rotarily moved to bring the successive displays 11 into view through the window 6.
As best seen in Figures 5 and 6, the plunger 14 is provided with a lateral pin 29 adapted for engagement with the cover 14 to control the outward or normal position of the plunger 14 with its linger 15 in the line of travel of the pins 16.
The desire for possession of one of the articles 17 to be dispensed furnishes an incentive for the operator to manipulate the drum 7, which, in turn, presents the several displays 11 in a moving sequence, and, inasmuch as an article 17 may be obtained only by directing attention to the plunger 14 and the disc 9, which are located in immediate proximity to the window 6 through which the displays 11 are exposed to view, an attention compelling effect is produced by the conjoint operation of the whole device, which in practice has proven to be effective for the purposes intended.
lt will be readily seen that any movable member carrying advertising matter may be substituted for the rotatable member?, so long as the advertising matter is displayed in a moving sequence, the latter effect having much more advertising'value than a stationary display, that other forms of dispensing devices may be employed than that shown, and I do not ivish myself limited to the gratuitous dispensing of the varticles in the maga- Zine, as, in some cases, the said articles may be valuable enough to Warrent the payment of a fee for the possession thereof, and that other changes and'modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the device may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
