ln the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter d may generally designate the improved safety hooln oit' device, which is adapted to be used in and i@ as part of the pull line or rod structure B of a conventional well pumping apparatus.
As will be well understood by those skilled in the art, the pull line or rod structure B may consist of a section 10 connected at a 3F location intermediate the safety hook-0H apparatus and the pumping jack of the well, to which it is connected in a relation which has been set forth in the coepending application above mentioned, and which is quite conven- :1:

tional. The pull rod structure B may also include the section 11, connected to the safety hook-off device Aland to the power source. The sections 10 and 11 in a cooperative relation with the details of the safety hook'- 85 off structure A are respectively provided with enlargements 12 and 13, which are of the general construction set forth in my copending application above mentioned. That is, they are really annular enlargements on the 90 ends of the sections 10 and 11 facing the apparatus A; the free ends thereof being tapered to a blunt point to permit of their automatic cooperation with the safety hooks 14 and 15 of the structure A, in a manner to be subse- 9F quently described. The enlargements 12 and 13 preferably are annular enlargements on the ends of the rod sections 10 and 11, and define annular shoulders 18 and 19 respectively facing in transverse planes in the direction of lo the lods and 11 with which they are respectively connected, and which shoulders cooperate in a detent relation with the safety hooks 14 and 15, as will be subsequently mentioned. The enlargements 12 and 13 may have detachable threaded connections with their respective pull rod sections 10 and 11, in any preferred manner.
Referring more in detail to the safety hookoi apparatus A, the same includes a supporting standard or post 25, anchored at 26 upon any suitable foundation, and at its upper end supporting a cross head or beam 27 in a T-shaped relation. This beam 27 is preferably of wood, although obviously it may be of other materials` and it is braced at its outer ends by means of diagonal anchor rods 28 which extend downwardly in a divergent relation and are anchored in a suitable foundation 29 in a manner to effectively stabilize the beam 27. The latter may be otherwise reinforced if found desirable.
Upon the beam 27 is a supporting frame C, extending from opposite sides thereof in the direction of the sections 10 and 11 of the pull rod structure. This frame preferably consists of parallel rods or bars 35 and 36, the same being preferably solid and relatively strong and extended transversely through suitable openings in thel beam 27 at opposite sides of the post 25. The rods and 36 are in paralellism, and the ends thereof extending in the direction of the pull rod section 10 are preferably encased in metal tubes or pipes 37,`which bear against suitable washers-38 at the facing surface of the beam 27, as shown in Figure 2. These pipes 37 are preferably bolted in place upon the rods by means of ,nuts 39 threaded on the screw threaded ends of the rods 35 and 36, which project beyond the pipes 37. At the opposite side of the beam 27, the extending portions of the frame rods 35 and 36 are encased in suitable pipes or conduits 40, which may be longer than the conduit 37, and which'bear against washers 41 at the facing side of the beam 27. The rods 35 and 36 at the outer ends thereof beyond the conduit 40. extend transversely through the. ends of a suitable cross bearing 44; the ends of the conduits 46 hearing against suitable washers 45 at the facing side of the bearing 44. Of course the free ends of the rods 35 and 36 receive nuts 47 to clamp the bearing 44 upon the ends of the rods 35 and 36 inthe position described. 'lhis bearing 44 i is preferably of Wood and is provided with a transverse opening 45 through which the pull rod section 11 bears in a freely slidable and properly supported relation with respect to the hook-ofil details to be subsequently mentioned. It is to be understood that if the cantilever effect of supporting the frame structure C, as above described, is not sufficient, the same may be otherwise braced and supported for stabilization.
been detailed in Figures 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings. It consists of a substantially channel-shaped inverted body 50, that is, with the channel way 51 facing downwardly, as shown in Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings. 'At the well facing end the body 50 is tapered to a blunt end, as at 52, and at this point the way 51 is widest and therefrom gradually restricts in the direction of the opposite end of the body where a shoulder 54 is provided which lies in a plane transverse to the axis of the channelway 51. At this restricted end of the channel way 51 a restricted end outlet opening 55 is provided, of a size to slidably receive the rod body of the pull rod section 10. At opposite sides the body 50 is exteriorly provided with ears or lugs 59 and 60 extending at right angles to .the longitudinal axis of the body 50, which are apertured -at 61 and receive thereinthe reduced ends 62 of rigid supporting arms 63; the latter being detachably bolted as at 64 to the ears or lugs 59 and 60. The arms 63 eX- tend beyond theshoulder 54 in the direction of the post 25, and are provided with transverse passageways 66 receiving pivot bolts 67 by means of which to pivotally connect the safety hook member 14 upon the outer ends of angle brackets 70 and 71. These angle brackets 70 and .71 are bolted as by the bolts 39 above mentioned upon the rods 35 and 36 at the outer ends against the frame pipes 37. Means is provided to limit the swinging of the body 50 at pivots of the arms 63, upon the angle brackets 70 and 71, through an are of substantially 90, so that it may assume an upright or vertical inoperative position, or a horilzontal position to enable the automatic detent coupling association with the enlargement 12 of the pull rod section 10. The means of limiting the movement of the safety hook member 14 consists in providing a pin or stop 74 upon the bracket 70 adjacent the pivot connection 67 of the arm 63 therewith, and Yproviding upon the bearing end of the arm 63, adjacent the pivot 67, a pair of stop lugs 77 and 78, placed at substantially 90, more or less, at opposite sides of the stop 74, so that as can readily be seen from Figure 8 the body 50 of the hook-off member 14 may be moved to substantially a vertical position, or substantially a horizontal position.
The improved safety hook-off apparatus in addition to the stationary frame C, includes a movable pull rod cooperating section D, which is reciprocably supported -upon the cross beam 27 for movement longitudinally of the pull rod sections 10 and 11. This frame D may consist of a pair of spaced parallel rods 80 and 81, best shown in Figure 2, which llttl have a detachable head connection at 86 in a suitable bayonetdike slot provided in the enlargement 12 ot the pull rod section 10, alter the manner more specifically described in my co-pendiner application above mentioned. lt is pretlerred to have a detachable connection at this point, although this does not necessarily have to be so. .itt the opposite side o't the beam 2T trom the shank 8&1, the :tree ends ot the rod portions 8O and 81 ot the movable trame D are provided with the safl'ety hook structure 15. rll`his safety hook structure is ot substantially the same con struction as the satety hook structure 14C above described, that is, it includes a body 90 `termed almost identical with the body of the salety hoolr structure 14, and provided with laterally extending ears 91, to which are bolted rigid arms 92; the latter at their opposite ends being pivoted at 93 to the ends of the arms and B1. 'llhe usual arc of movement limiting means is provided, to permit the sa'tety hook body 90 to move through an are ot substantially trom a substan tially vertical to a substantially horizontal position, and vice versa. llt will be noted trom the drawings that both the safety hook 4bodies 50 and 90 are provided with right lili till
angled handles to permit of the facile movement thereof. llt is to be noted, ol course, that the inlet end ot the channel for the safety hook body 90 vliaces in the direction ot the pull rod section 11, inasmuch as it is adapted to receive the enlargement 13, in the same cooperating; sense as the hook member ll receives the enlargement 12 ot the rod scction 10 above described.
ljteterring to the operation of the invention, during a normal pumping operation, the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 1 ot the drawings. Under such circumstances the shoulder 19 ot the enlargement 13 is caught against the body 9() ot the sate-ty hook l5: lthe latter of course being lowered to a substantially horizontal position to ettect the connection ot the null rod section 11 with the movable tra-me D ot the apparatus. The shank Bet has its connection at 8G with the enlargement 12 ot the pull rbd section 10, and the safety hook 14 is raised to the position shown in Figures l and 2. The power apparatus then reciprocates the pull rod sections 10 and 1l, through this connection, to operate the pumping string of the well, for well known purposes. llt it is desired to disconnect the power source from the pumping string, without permit-ting the latter to lower into the well, the operator swings the satety hook llt downwardly to a horizontal position such as shown in Figure 3 of the structure lil, permitting the riding thereof y through the channel, until the enlargement 12 passes beneath the lowered hook 14 and the latter straddles the pull rod section 10. Upon the movement of the pull rod in the direction of the well, the enlargement 12 will contact with the safety hook 14, as shown in Figure 1, and above described, and the power connected pull rod section 11 will continue its movement as also shown in Figure 4, to a position where the enlargement 13 is tree oit its trictional and positive contact with the hook member 15. 'llhe latter may then be litted as shown in the dotted lines in Figure L1, and upon a power application upon the section 11 the latter may move to the position shown in Figure 5, entirely disconnected from the movable :trame D. The latter is of course directly connected with the weight of the pumping string, but, due to the lowered safety hook 14, the latter by reason of its connection with the stationary trame structure of the apparatus will support the weight ot' the pumping string.
When it is desired to place the pumping string in operation, the power mechanism is operated and the hook 15 lowered. The enlargement 13 Will ride beneath the hook 15 to etlect the automatic connection of the movable frame B with the power rod section 11, and upon movement of the movable trame D in the direction ot the power source the hook 14 may be lifted into an out of the way position.

the cross beam 27may be provided in the nature of a U-bolt mechanism extended through the post 25 and at its ends bolted through the top of the beam 27, at 101, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. llt is of course apparent that the frame D has a bearing` in the beam 27, at opposite sides of the post 25, to permit its rectilinear movement in a dened path which will permit of the detent and coupling parts to function in the manner above described.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement ot parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invcntion or the scope of the claims.

the other connected to pump operating mech- 'anism at the well, a stationary frame, a movable frame supported on the stationary frame means establishing its connection to the pull rod sections as a link between the same including releasable automatically eonnectable hook-off means for connecting the movable' frame to one of said pull rod sections, and` means releasably connecting the other end of the movable frame to the other pull rod section and providing an abutment, and a releasable safetyhook member on the stationary frame for receiving lthe abutment in a coupled relation therewith. 2. In a device of the class described thecombination of a reciprocatory pull rod having an abutment transverse thereto, a reciprocating frame, a detent pivoted upon the frame and having a slotted passageway longitudinally thereof for recelving the pull rod, the detent being of such size that the abutment will come to rest thereagainst to connect the detent and pull line together, the detent being so pivoted to said frame that it may be swung to an operative or inoperative position relav `tive to the pull rod and its abutment, a second pull rod line, and means for releasably connecting the second mentioned rod with the frame. v
3. In a safety hook-off device the combination of a substantially channel-shaped detent, arms connected at opposite sides of the detent and extending longitudinally thereof, said detent providing a shoulder at an end thereof and the arms extending outwardly beyond said shoulder, and means pivoting said arms at their free ends.
4. In a safety hook-oli' device the combination of a substantially channel-shaped detent, arms connected at op site sides of the detent and extending longltudinally thereof, said detent providing a shoulder at an end thereot' and the arms extending outwardly beyond said shoulder, means pivoting said arms at their free ends, and means for limiting tho movement of the detent through an arc of substantially from vertical to horizontal and vice versa.

In combination with a pair of pull rod sections having enlargements at the adjacent portions thereof, said enlargements at the relative facing ends thereof being tapered convergently towards each other and at the opposite ends thereof each Aproviding abrupt shoulders disposed in planes normal to the pull rod sections with which they are respectively connected, a stationary supporting apparatus, a movable frame associated with the stationary supporting apparatus, a movable detent mounted upon said movable frame in-l cluding a coupling portion provided with a channel for slidably receiving one of said pull rod sections therein, said channel being tapered aringly at an end and at its opposite end defining an abrupt shoulder so that the flaring end will permit the tapered end of the enlargement of the adjacent pull rodv section to ride therein and lift the detent to permit the latter to drop after passing of the enlargement of said coupling rod section so as to engage the shoulder of the detent with the shoulder of the enlargement in order to releasably couple the movable frame with the said pull rod section, and a similar detent mova ly carried by the stationary supportmg apparatus for like cooperation with the enlargement of the other pull vrod section, said movable frame being connected with the `last mentioned pull rod section so as to move
