Description

Jan. 26, 1932. E. w. GILBERT PAPER ROLL HOLDER Fil ed OCT. l0 1929 /N VEN TOF? if lwatentecl dan. 26, 1932.
EEATNT OFFICE ELWOD WARREN GILBERT, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA PAPER ROLL HOLDER Application led ctober 10, 1929.
This invention generally stated relates to a paper holder and has more especial relation to a wall, table or deslr pad. rihe leading object of the present invention may be said to l reside in the provision of a memorandum paper or like holder of entr-eme simplicity, which may be manufactured and sold at a very low cost and which is convenient, etlicient and practical for the purpose desired.
li further object of the present invention is to ji'irovi de a device of the character stated which may be used as a wall or desk pad in which. the parts are arranged to lie fiat upon supp i as a wall, table or desk and in which a gravity feed roll employed by which paper may be advanced toward the cutter of the devic @ther and further objects ofthe present inbien reside in the provision of general details of construction and in the arrangement, combination and connection of parts for attaining the results sought by the foregoing objects. @their and further objects not at this time appearing will be disclosed hereinafter.
scope of the invention will be more fully un- The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
i`he nature,` characteristic features and the line 3-3 of Fig, l, and
l l s a view in section taken upon the line il--fl of Figure 3, the pencil being omitted.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention l have shown in the accompanying draws one form thereof which is at present prerred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable Serial No. 398,794.
results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts, l des- Ktes my novel construction of paper holder, wherein l employ the back or body strip 2 which is of relatively thick cardboard, which continued at its upper portion througha slot 3, in the rectangular frame 4, and curved as at 5 to conform to the convex paper roll holder (l, which terminates in the betteln wall 'l' (see Fig. 3) which has a terminal lip or flange 8, positioned in the slot 9 in the bottom wall l of the frame l, which is composed of said bottom wall, the upright sides 1l, the top wall l2 and the rear wall 13. The paper roll lll is positioned loosely in the chamber l formed between the convex strip (E, the back and the sides, top and bottom 'alle of the frame il, and the strip l5, on which any desired memoranda may be made, is passed or pulled downwardly between the lip 8, and the bach 2 and passes thence under the lower transverse strip 16, which is preferably of metal and serves both as a guide and as a cutter whereby the desired length of paper can be pulled downwardly and then torn it will be noted that the weight of the paper roll le always pressing downwardly upon the portion 7, which tends to cause the terminal `lip or tongue 8 always frictienally to bear against the pendant strip lo at the point 17 across the full width of the strip l5, so that the same is kept taut at all times, as is evident, the transverse strip or bar i6, retaining` the lower portion of the strip l5 in position, so that any desired memoranda can be readily inserted upon the strip l5, and the latter then pulled downwardly and torn off by the cutter bar 1G. rlhe holder can be readily suspended from a wall in a vertical position by the eye 18, but it will be found to function with equal effectiveness, if laid flat or horizontally on a table or desk.
.lf desired l may use an outer covering of ornamental appearance to enclose the roll le whereby the value of the article is enhanced.
n use the paper roll 14 is protected from dust, dirt and the like within the chamber l5 by means of the convexed portion 6 of the locking strip and in this connection it may be stated that the convened portion not only assists in maintaining the paper roll clean but also serves to keep the latter from being crushed or distorted the advantage of which is apparent. Vrlhe opening 19 through the paper roll 11i is a convenient place in which to position a lead pencil 2G or the like, the position of the opening 19 with respect to the height of walls 1l being such that this may be readily accomplished.
By the above described arrangement and construction of parts a very simple, neat, attractive and in Xpensive paper holder for use in a vertical position upon a wall or horizontally upon a desk or library table is provided. v
Furthermore by the employment of the hinged cover and lip instead of trunnions 25 and an inclined base a paper feed is provided under tension so that the paper passing from the roll always maintains a lat position between .said lip and the lower cutter, and furthermore the paper is positioned tlatwise 3U upon .the back 2 to ensure particularly upon desk or table use more ready inscription thereon because the writers arm is positioned upon the desk or table in the natural writing position. However, in the case of suspenn 35 sion upon a wall the base 2 lies latwise against the wall and forms an efficient backing for a writing pad.
am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departing from the spirit or. essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claim rath- 5 er than to the foregoing description to indi cate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
U A device of the character stated comprising a rigid, fiat base portion provided at one end with a box-like compartment adapted to contain a roll of paper, said compartment having a slot therethrough at its forward end ,u for the feeding of paper therethrough, and a hinged cover for said compartment provided with a lip passing through said slot and juxtaposed to said back for exerting pressure upon the strip being unrolled to keep the G0 latter taut.
