sert on the die itself by coiling a strip thereon and feeding the die provided with the neck portion into a box blank arranged in front of a shaping channel in such manner thaton entrance of the die into the channel the box part isformed and at the same time the box part and the neck insert are connected.
As compared with this slow and unreliable operation in accordance with the present invention the previously gummed neck strip is laid on one side-of the box blank, and the blank fed forwards to folding means while bending at right angles the side connected r to the strip to form the neck by means of a forming die resting on the bottom of the blank, which folding means first press the strip to form the neck, and then the sides on the side walls of the forming die.
In this manner the neck strip and the box or container part are formed in one operation by a simple feedingmovement of the forming die.
The new invention is further characterized by this that the neck strip is laid on a guide with a passage for blank is laid on a guide directly beneath it with a passage for the forming block and in front of a shaping channel provided with folding means, then a binding strip is gummed to the one end of the neck strip and the blank with the forming block is held between two dies and pushed throu h the shaping channel, whereupon the die acting on the forming block is retracted and the work is ushed into a channel by a transversely moving plunger in such manner that the end of the neck strip provided with the binding strip is first upturned by means of a bending finger and then the other "end is upturned.

By bending this binding strip the tendency of the strip to roll up when moistened by adhesive is counteracted.

The actuatinq mechanism of the apparatus comprises an electro-motor 55 or other driving mechanism from which motion is imparted to the drivin shaft 58 by means of abelt 56 and pullv 57. Mounted on the shaft 58 is a. cam 59 that operates a lever 61 bv means of a roller 60 carried bv the latter. The lever 61 is actuated by a spring (not shown) that tends to swing the same toward the cam around its fulcrum 62. The bar 3 is connected to the lever 61 by a rod 63 so that the same can follow the cam 59. Also mounted on the shaft 58 is the cam 64. The latter actuates a lever 65 corres onding to ever 61 and which is fulcrumed at 66 and is actuated by a spring (not shown) tending to swing it downwards. The lever 65, bv a guide rod 67. is connected to the bar 18. Furthermore, mounted on the shaft 58 is a pulley 68 from which. by a belt 69 and pulley 70, motion is imparted to ashaft 71. On the 0 shaft 71 there is mounted a cam 72 which, by means of a roller 73, actuates a lever 75 fulcrumed at 74. The lever 75 is connected to a guide rod 76 at 75' which rod, at its opposite end. is connected to one end of a double armed lever 77. The latter is fulcrumed at 78 in the machine frame. This lever is bifurcated at its opposite end as at 77' with which it engages the pin 7 9 that projects from a slide 80. The slide is guided prismatically at 81 on the frame. The lower part 80 of the slide 80 in its turn is formed as a guide for the part 2' of the die 2. Mounted on the shaft 71 there is a cam 81 that actuates the lever 83 by means of a roller 82. The lever 83 is fulcrumed at 74. Connected to the upper end 83--0f the said lever 83 is arm 84,
which is connected to the guide piece 85. The latter is slidably borne in the table 1 and is provided with an upwardly projecting block 85' which has a vertical slot 85" in which engages a pin 86 fixed to the part 2 of the die 2. Thus while the die 2 receives its vertical movements from the cam 72 its movement in horizontal direction is controlled from the cam 81.
In addition to the lever 83 there is also a lever 87 fulcrumed at 74. The axis of its roller 87' axially coincides with the axis of roller 82 of the lever 83. The cam 81 in the plane of roller 87 is provided with a finger 81' whereby through the lever 87 and guide mechanism 12 the pressure arm 13 is actuated. The guide mechanism 12 is connected to lever 87 at 87 The neck strip S coming from a pile is guided by means of a couple of feed rollers 88 over the gumming device 89 which apply a layer of glue to the neck 1.' The control of the bending fingers 14, 15 and of the fingers 19 and 20 is effected from a shaft 90 extending longitudinally of the table, and which operatively connects to shaft 71 by means of bevel gears 91. shaft 92 and bevel gears 93. Mounted on the shaft 90 there is a cam 94 which cooperates with leversv 95 engaging the bending fingers 14, 15 at 14 and 15 respectively. Also mounted on shaft 90 is another cam 96 with which cooperate levers 97 0f fingers 19 and 20.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 to 8 the neck strip Z moved by suitable feeding means to the support 21 and provided on the under side with adhesive is placed against a stop 22. The binding strip V coming from the spool 23 before it comes into the path of the severing device is led between a pair of profiled rollers 24, 24 shown in perspective in Fig. 6, as a result of which it is curved to counteract any tendency to roll up due to the application of the adhesive. The roller 24: serves also to apply the adhesive, for which purpose it is disposed in an adhesive container 25. The roller 24' is rotated by a suit ably operated pawl and 26, 27, and the binding strip is thus intermittently fed between apair of knives 28, 29. The knife 29 is mounted rigidly on a supporting plate 30, while the knife 28 is mounted on the support 31 which is movable in the guide 32. On the downward movement of the support 31 after the binding strip V is severed a lug 33 on the lmife 28 which is movably mounted on its support and is drawn by the spring 34 into operative position strikes against the stop 35, as a result of which the knife is held in the position shown in Fig. 8, while the support 31, the lowersurface of which is provided with a. resilient plate 36, moves downwards further and presses the binding strip against the neck strip. By feeding the binding strip at right ratchet mechanism angles to the longitudinal direction of the neck strip the advantage is obtained that neck strips of different widths can be used on one and the same machine. Only the connecting rod 38 engaging the lever 37 need be adjusted in the slot 37.
After the support 31 has been moved away from the neck strip, the forming block pushed from the side between two resilient holding cheeks 39 by means of the plunger 40 is moved downwards by the die 41. The form ing block first rests on the neck strip Z and presses it into the recess 42 in the base 21 as a result of which. the projecting ends are bent upwards to U-form. The forming block now provided on three sides with a neck strip contacts with one of the longer sides 1 of the blank S lying on of which it is connected to side of the neck strip provided with adhesive. The die 44 which is arranged resiliently in its rod and which during this working operation is in the position shown in Fig. 4 in dotted lines serves to hold it also. The dies 41 and 44 holding the work between them move down- 1 Wards through the shaping channel 45prosleeve 47 moves forward-v vided with folding means in which the blank is bent vertically upwards and the two sides Z are upturned at right angles 'and pressed against the neck portion. After the die 41 has moved back into its initiall position the bending finger 48 operated by lever 46 in the and upturns the end of the neck strip provided with the binding strip (cf. Fig. 4). The plunger 50 operated by the rod 49 now moves forward and pushes the work towards the right.
The end of the neck strip still projecting is here turned over by the laterally projects ing bending finger 51, so that the two abutting ends of the neck are bound by the strip V. In passing further into the channel 52 the last side Z of the blank is upturned by the bar 53 disposed in the mouth of the channel and pressed against the neck portion provided with .adhesive. In order to subject the upturned and gummed parts to pressure for a longer time, the lower wall of the channel is formed by resilient plates 54. At the outlet to the channel 52 the forming core F is withdrawn by grippers or a suction-head or the like and again brought in front of the die 40 by means of a conveyor band or chain.
The operating mechanism of the second modification is as follows Mounted on the main driving shaft 100 is the cam 101 with which cooperates the roller 102 of the angle lever 103. The latter is fulcrumed at 104 and at 105 connected to the guide 106. This guide engages at 107 the double armed lever 108 fulcrumed at 109. The bifurcated end 108' of lever 108 engages a pin 110 provided on the slidable carrier 31. Mounted also on shaft 100 is the cam 111 which by roller 49' actuates the angle eccentric the guide 43, as a result The lever lever 49. The latter is fulcrumed at 112 to the frame. The lever 46 which is fulcrumed at 113 to the frame is actuated through the roller 46 by the cam 114. The guide bar 38 engages with its head 38 the I disc 115 mounted on shaft 100. The shaft 100 is operatively connected by the bevel gears 116, 117 to shaft 118 arranged at a right angle to shaft 100. Mounted on shaft 118 is the cam 119 which through the roller 12C actuates a lever- 121 fulcrumed at 122 and which engages with its bifurcated on the slide end 123 the pin 124 provided 125. The die 44 is resiliently borne on the slide 125 by a spring 126. Mounted on the shaft 118 is also a cam 127 which through roller 128' actuates a lever 128 fulcrumed at 129. The lever 128 is connected to the guide 130 131 is fulcrumed at 132 and engages with its bifurcated end 132 a pin 133 provided on the die 41.
I claim:
1. A method of producing box or container parts having a neck insert consisting in placing an open neck strip previously gummed on one side of the box blank and feeding the blank, then bending at right angles the side united to the neck strip against a form, then first folding said neck strip aboutsaid form and then folding other sides of said blank against said folded neck strip into engagement with the gummed side.
2. Apparatus for producing a box part hav ing a neck insert by combining a blank with a neck insert, comprising, a guide table surface on which the blank is placed, a forming die, said die adapted to be vertically reciprocated and adapted to hold the blank while the neck strip is applied to one side thereof, a bar adapted to be raised from the table surface and to bend the said side with the neck strip against the front wall of the forming die,'folding means, means for feeding the die with the blank and neck strip to the folding means and fingers serving to hold the box part while the die returns to initial position.
3. Apparatus for producing a box part having a neck insert by combining a blank with a neck insert, comprising, a guide table surface on which the blank is placed, a forming die, said die adapted to be vertically reciprocated and adapted to hold the blank while the neck strip is applied to one side thereof, a bar adapted to be raised from the table surface and to bend the said side with the neck strip against the front wall of the foimin'g die, folding means, means for feeding the die with the blank and neck strip to the folding means, fingers serving to hold the box part while the die returns to initial position, and bending rollers serving to bend .the side walls and to engage the neck strip.

4. Apparatus for producing a box part having a neck insert by combining a blank with a neck insert, comprising a guide table surface on which the blank is placed, a forming die, said die adapted to be vertically reciprocated and adapted to hold the blank while the neck strip is applied to one side thereof, a bar adapted to be raised from the table surface and to bend the said side with the neck strp against the front wall of the forming die, folding means, means for feeding the die with the blank and neck strip to the folding the box part while the die returns to initial position, bending fingers, said bending fingers fitted with rollers and acting transversely of the direction of feed to grip the neck strip over the ungummed surface and press its projecting ends against the forming die, and a bar adapted to be raised from the table surface to bend the last side of the box part.
5. Apparatus for producing box and container parts having a neck strip comprising a forming block, a guide for the neck strip, said guide having a passage for the forming block, a shaping channel, a guide for the blank, said guide having a passage for the forming block in front of the shaping channel, foldinglmeans in said channel, dies adapted to hold the blank between them and adapted to be fed through the shaping channel means for retracting one of said dies, a second channel a plunger serving to press the blank into said second channel, a bending finger bending a binding strip and folding means for bending the remaining side.
6. Apparatus for producing box or container parts having a neck strip, a forming block, a guide for said neck strip, said guide having a passage for the forming block, a shaping channel, folding means in said channel, a guide having a passage for the forming block in front of the shaping channel, dies for vholding the blank between them and for feeding the blank through the shaping channel, means for retracting one of said dies, a second channel, a plunger movable to push the blank into said second channel, a bending fin er for bending a binding strip on said blani, folding means for bending another side and means for severing the binding strip from a continuous strip fed forwards bv intermittently acting feeding means transversely of the longitudinal direction of the neck strip.
7. Apparatus for producing box or container parts having a neck strip, a forming block, a guide for said neck strip, said guide having a passage for the forming block, a shaping channel, folding means in said channel, a guide having a passage for the forming block in front "of the shaping clnpinel. dies for holding the blank between theni and means, fingers servingto hold for feeding the blank through the shaping channel, means for retracting one of said dies, a second channel, a plunger movable to push the blank into said second channel, a bending finger for bending a binding strip on said blank, folding means for bending another side and means forsevering the binding strip from a continuous strip fed forwards by intermittently acting feeding means transversely of the longitudinal direction of the neck strip, said feeding means consisting of profiled rollers which serve to curve the gummed strip, one of said feeding rollers being formed as an adhesive applying roller.
8. Apparatus for producing box or container parts having a neck strip, a forming block, a guide for said neck strip, said guide having a passage for the forming block. a shaping channel, folding means in said channel, a guide having a passage for the forming block in front of the shaping channel, dies for holding the blank between them and for feeding the blank through the shaping channel, means for retracting one of said dies, a second channel, a plunger movable to push the blank into said second channel, a bending finger for bending a binding strip on said blank, folding means for bending another side and means for severing the binding strip from a continuous strip fed forwards by intermittently acting feeding men n s transversely of the longitudinal direction of the neck strip, said severing means comprising an upper knife, an upper knife support formed as a presser bar serving to press the binding strip against the end of the neck strip, said upper knife mounted to move longitudinally in its support, a spring acting to pull said knife into operative position, a hook shaped portion on the knife, a fixed stop engageable by said hook and serving to hold the knife in closing position.
9. An apparatus for producing a box part having a neck insert, by combining a blank with a neck insert, comprising a support on which said blank is placed, therefor, a forming die adapted to be vertically reciprocatcd and to hold said blank while the neck strip is applied to one side thereof, means for bending said side against said forming die. folding means, means for feeding said die and blank to said folding means, and means for holding the box parts during the return movement of the die.
10. Apparatus for producing a box part having a neck insert, by combining a blank with a neck strip com rising means for attaching a neck strip to one side of a blank, :1 die and folding means for bending said neck strip and box blank about said die to form said box. y
