The present invention relates broadly to.

bottles, jars and similar containers, and more particularly to closure fasteners therefor.

In many cases it is desirable to provide a container with a closure which may be held in predetermined sealing position thereon during transportation of the container or periods of non-use during which it is desired to protect the contents.

At the present time there is a constantly growing demand for containers of the socalled wide mouth type, adapted for the reception of coffee, sugar, condiments, candies or the like, and of such dimensions that it is H possible to insert a hand, measuring on or other device through the open mouth. ot infrequently it is desirable to tightly retain a cover or cap in position thereon in such manner as to seal the container and yet capable of easy removal to facilitate access to the container.

It has heretofore been proposed to provide such containers with different types of lever, cam, spring or bail closure fastening means having a more or less permanent attachment to the container.

It is one of the purposes of the present invention to provide a container of the general construction before referred to with closure retaining means adapted to be bodily removed at will from the container, and effective during desired intervals for tightly retaining a closure in position thereon.

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown for purposes of illustration only, one

form of container with one embodiment of closure retaining means.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper or neck portion of a container, showing the closure and fastening means in position thereon,

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the construction illustrated. in Figure 1, and

Figure 3 a perspective view of the fastening means per se.

In carrying out the present invention, there may be provided a container 2 of any desired constructional characteristics and contour having a neck 3 which preferably terminates in a shoulder or flange 4.

Cooperating with thecontainer isa closure 5, having a knob or handle 6, facilitating handling thereof, and terminating in a sealing rim 7 adapted to overlie the shoulder 4, Intermediate the shoulder 4 and rim 7 there may be provided a sealing gasket 8 of any suitable material. This gasket is conveniently held in position against accidental displacement by providing the closure with a downwardly projecting flange 9 of such dimensions as to extend into the neck 3 of the container.

" For fasteningthe closure in position, there is provided a spring fastening means, preferably comprising a length of spring wire 10 bent downwardly at uniformly spaced points and thence inwardly to provide clips 11 adapted to embrace the rim and shoulder and extend under the shoulder, as illustrated inthe drawings. Intermediate the clips, the fastening means is shaped to provide arcuate portions 12 adapted to overlie the closure adjacent the periphery thereof, the radius of curvature of the portions 12 being greater than the radius of curvature of the rim portion of the closure, as clearly indicated in Figure 2. I The ends of the fastening means may be suitably interconnected as indicated at 1.3.

By reason of this construction, there is provided a fastening means effective for tightly holding a closure in position and capable of easy application and removal. During such application and removal the arcuate portions 12 tend to straighten out, thereby increasing the separation between the clips to such an extent that they may he slipped into position or removed from such position.

Upon release of the fastening means, the

tening means may be bodily removed, thereby facilitating thorough cleaning of the parts. These advantages arise largely from the use of a fastening means which is bodily detachable from both the container and closure and which has no point of permanent attachment thereto.

While I have herein illustrated a preferred form of container, closure and fastening means, it will be understood that changes in the construction and arrangement of each of these parts may be made as desired, within the scope of the appended claims and without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. The combination with a container having a neck portion shaped to provide a shoulder, of a closure having a rim cooperating with said shoulder, and an annular fastening means bodily detachable from said closure and container for holding the closure in position, said fastening means comprising a spring wire having spaced downwardly extending spring loops bent inwardly at the lower ends thereof for engagement with said shoulder, the wire between said loops having an arcuate shape, the radius of curvature of the rim of the closure being less than the radius of curvature of the are between the loops and greater than the radius of curvature of the loops.

As an article of manufacture, a fastening means for container closures comprising a spring wire annulus having spaced downwardly extending spring loops bent inwardly at the lower ends thereof, the wire between the loops having an arcuate shape, the radius of curvature of the rim of the closure being less than the radius of curvature of the are between the loops and greater than the radius of curvature of the loops.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a fastening means for container closures comprising a spring wire annulus having spaced downwardly extending spring loops bent inwardly at the lower ends thereof, the wire between said loops having an arcuate shape, the radius of the arcs between loops being greater than the mean radius of the annulus.

l. As a new article of manufacture, a fastening means for container closures comprising a spring wire annulus having spaced downwardly extending spring loops bent inwardly at the lower ends thereof, the wire between said loops having an arcuate shape and forming a non-circular configuration, and lyin within a circle drawn through the various loops, using the center of the annulus as the center of said circle.

5. The combination with a container having a neck portion shaped to provide a shoulder, of a closure having a rim cooperating with said shoulder and an annular fastening means bodily detachable from said myhand.
