Description

DOUBLE SERVING COMPACT Filed April 10. 1951 5 INVENTOR B. B wers Patented Jan. 19, 1932 ANNY B. Bownns, or new YonK, n. Y.
DOUBLE SERVING COMPACT Application filed April 10,
My invention relates to improvements in cosmetic boxes.
Pursuant to my' invention, the cosmetic 7 box provides for the enclosing of a cosmetic in powdered form by the provision of a perforated enclosing member, preferably of rubber'or like yieldable, moldable material, the material of the box itself serving as the bot- V tom, the material of the enclosing member be- 1 ing thickened at its periphery, and an annular member cooperating with the thickened peripheral portion of the enclosing member for removably retaining the thickened pe ripheral portion in efiective engagement with T5 the side wall of the box. 9
Preferably, the containing member is dimensioned whereby upon positioning of its peripheral portion within the box, the central portion of the containing member is sub- Z' T stantially taut. Upon applying a puif or equivalent to the outer face of the containing member, the powdered cosmetic is auto matically discharged through the perforations.
My cosmetic box, in preferred form, provldes for two cosmetics in powdered form, 1n which type of embodiment of my lnventlon,
the box comprises two parts, either of circular, rectangular or other appropriate contour, and the box parts are hlnged to one another; or the box may be formed of a central portion in which both compartments are disposed, and covers hinged to such central part.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from'the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical central elevation of on V embodiment of my invention;
1931. Serial No. 529,128.
figuration of any" suitable artistic design. The interior of each box part serves to enclose the desired cosmetics 14, 15, in powdered form.
Cooperating with each head portion, I provide an enclosing member 16, 17, preferably of rubber and having perforations indicated at 18.
In the instance of the head portions 12, 13, being of circular contour, the enclosing members 16, 17 are of similar outline, and similarly their respective peripheral portions 16a, 17 a of thickened cross-section.
Cooperating with each thickened peripheral portion, I further provide a retaining member, see 19, 20, preferably of stiff material such as steel, of general outline conforming to the contour of the thickened peripheral portion, 16a, 17a. Each retaining member 19, 20 is shaped to impart resiliency thereto, as by an offsetting portion respectively engaging the thickened peripheral portions under pressure in an outward radial direction, against the side walls 10a, 11a, of thebox parts, and an inner annular portion, see 19a, 20a, adapted to substantially extend, parallel to and in contact with the outer face of its enclosing member, 16, 17, when the latter is in normal position. Such retaining member 19, 20, in its above described most preferred form, may be described as of a flattened S cross-section.
When charging each part of thebox, each enclosing member 16, 17, and its retaining member 19, 20,'is removed, and the desired cosmetic powder is charged within the respective box parts to proper quantity, whereupon the enclosing members 16, 17 are placedin position and finally secured by the respective retaining members 19, 20.
Each domed or bulged type of box head is desirably offset, as is indicated at 12a, 13a, to thereby form a seat for engagement there with by the enlarged peripheral portions 16a, 17 a, of the enclosing members 16, 17.
I In use, a pad, or equivalent, is applied with suitable pressure upon the outer face of either enclosing members 16, 17, whereby the powdered cosmetic under the increased air pressure thus created, 1S discharged through the perforations 18 upon the face of the pad.
The upwardly discharging air pressure action arising under the pressure applied on the outer face of enclosing member, is e ective notwithstanding the reduction of the cosmetic content.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the box parts 12, 13 are shown hinged to one another by hinge cars 21, and intle 22.
This orm of my invention, aifords a convenient mounting for a cover platewhich may serve to close the unused half of the box art.
Desirably, such cover plate 23 has its opposite faces mirrored.
The modification shown in Fig. 3 comprises a central body part 24 of enlarged thickness and oppositely disposed covers 25, 26, preferably oppositely hinged at 25a, 26a, respectively. A mirror, see 27, is preferably provided for the inner face of each cover.
"The two compartments for the powdered compact, disposed within the enlarged centrol box part 24, conform largely to the hereinabovo described construction, and like parts are designated by like reference charam However, in the construction shown inFig. 3, the bottoms of the oppositely disposed compartments are formed by means of plates 28, 29, o positely bowed at their central portions. ese plates 28, 29 are seowod-lbtheir peri heral edges to the inner face of thowall o the central box part 24. The enlarged peripheral portions 16a, 17a, ofthe enclosing members 16, 17, abutat their inner faces upon the flattened peripheral edges of the plates 28, 29.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 conforms largely to that illustrated in Fig. 1, except ing; for the rovision of individual cover plates-.30, 31 or the two box halves. These cover" lates 30, 31 are preferably mirrored onthelr under faces, and also on their upper faces if desired.
Fig. 5 illustrates the application of my invention to a box of rectangular or square contour, the side elevation of which appears from Fig. 4. .As indicated in Fig. 5, the cover plates'may bear legends indicating the type of cosmetic in the compartments.
' Whereas I have described my invention by ce to-specific formations thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing:fmm the spirit of the invention.
