KNOCKDOWN;AND COMBINATION BURIAL CASKET Filed June 26, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 1 W mm MI 1 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Jan. 19, 1932; A. s. GUTMANN KNOGKDOWN AND COMBINATION BURIAL CASKET Filed June 26, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 IE-1D- i ATTORNEY be particularly pointed out in the Patented Jan. 19, 1932 ALWIN G. GUTMANN, F CLEVELAND, OHIO KNOCKDOWN AND COMBINATION BURIAL CASKET Application filed June 26,
This invention relates to burial caskets, and has for its main object to provide a burial casket consisting of sections which are readily assembled to form the complete casket, or certain sections may be assembled in various combinations to form various styles of caskets, or said sections removed for the same purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a burial casket of the above character, in which when. assembled, the sections will be securely held together.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will appended claims. I
In the several views of the drawings, similar characters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial casket constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar View, the lid being in its open position and the front side of the casket being removed,
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the base,
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 4- of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, the lid and foot end and front side being removed,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the base alone and with drape,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the rear side section of the casket,
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the head end section,
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the base eye member,
Figs. 10 and 11 are perspective views of modifications of the cooperating members for connecting the end sections to the side sections, and
Fig. 12 is a perspective view illustrating the lid removably connecting means.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the base, 2 the front side section, 3 the rear side section, 4 the head end section, 5 the foot end section, and 6 the lid, of a burial casket 1929. Serial No. 373,788.
PATENT oF Fica constructed of readily assembled and d'isasi sembled sections to form a complete casket of various styles thereof in accordance with my invention. To the top of the base 1 is'fixedf a board 7 of less lengthvand width than said base, thereby leaving a ledge 8 for supporting the side sections 2 and 3 and the end sections 4 and 5. .Mortised in the top of and fixed to the board 7 by screws at 9 are plates 10 having eyes 11 for receiving the inturned horizontal feet 12 of vertical bars 13 mortised in and fixed by screws at 14 to the inner faces of. the front and rear side sections 2 and 3. The
front and rear side sections 2mm 3 are of less length than the board 7 andtheend sections 4t and5 have right angle extensionsfindicated by-15-and 16, which are adaptedtto' be re-:
. movably connected to the ends of said sidesections. Projecting from the ends of the. side sections 2 and 3 are headed'pins or screws indicated by 17 and 18, and fixed to the ends of the extensions 15 and 16 offthe' end sections 4 and 5 by screws 19 are Vertical plates 20 and 21, which are provided with inverted key openings 22 and 23 for receivingsaid headed pins or screws. In'steadof the'headedpins' or screws 17 and 18 and cooperating openings 22 and 23 for connecting the. end sections 4 and 5 to the sections 2'and 3, the slide and groove members 24: and 25 or other suitable means may be employed.
The lid 6 is connected to the rear side section 3 so as to be capable of opening and closing, and also being held in an open inclined position, or being easily disconnected for removal, by the following means. To the rear edge of the lid 6 are fixedhinged members 26 and 27 carryinghorizontally extending pins, indicated by 28, which are adapted to enter eye members 29 and 30 fixed to the rear side section 3. A suitable cord 31, which is remov' ably connected to the end section 4 and to the lid 6 by means of eyes and hooks as at 32, is adapted to hold said lid in an inclined open position, or said cord may be removably disconnected when it is desired to remove said lid in order to make that style of a burial casket. The inside of the casket may be padded a at 33 and trimmed at the inner side 34 in any suitable manner, and when the base 1 is used alone with padding, as at 35, a drape 36 is provided around and suspended from said base.
From the drawings and description it is readily seen that a burial casket thus constructed of separate sections may be removably assembled without connecting the sections by means of screws or nails, that by omitting or afterwards removing certain sections, various styles of caskets may be quickly arranged for the laying out of the deceased, and that finally the sections may be replaced for forming the complete casket for interment.
It will be understood that this invention re lates to the construction of a burial casket which may be made up in different combinations to provide various desired styles of caskets for the laying out of the deceased, and that the details of construction may be changed to carry out the same but still be within the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a burial casket, the combination of a base, a board fixed to the base, the base having a ledge surrounding said board, eye members at the side edges of said board, side sections, the side sections having bars fixed thereto, the bars having inwardly extending feet, said side sections being adapted to rest upon said ledge of the base and said feet to enter said eye members, end sections, the end sections being adapted to rest upon said lid, and means for removably connecting said end sections to said side sections,
2. In a burial casket, the combination of a base, a board fixed to the base, the base having a ledge surrounding said board, eye members at the side edges of said board, side sections, the side sections being less in length than said base, the side sections having bars fixed thereto, the bars having inwardly extending feet, said side sections being adapted to rest upon said lid of the base and said feet to enter said eye members, end sections, the end sections having right angle extensions, and means for removably connecting said extensions of said end sections to the ends of said side sections.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
ALVVIN G. GUTMANN.
