Description

Jan. 19, 1932. w. s. WILLIAMS ANCHORING DEVICE Filed April 24, 1926 Patented Jan. 19, 1932 UNITED sra'rss WINFIELD SCOTT \VILLIAMfiQF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS A ENT orEFicE ANCHOBING nnvron Application filed April 24,
My invention relates to improvements in anchoring devices and more particularly to toggle-bolts such as are used for supporting objects against hollow walls or ceilings.
Ono object of the invention is to provide a toggle-bolt which shall be extremely sim ple in construction and operation, strong, durable, and economical. Another object is to provide a toggle-bolt which can be driven into building material such asv compositions of gypsum and like materials. Other objects and advantages of this invention will be up parent to those skilled in the art.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device, in relation to a wall. I
. Fig. 2 is a section on line2, 2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a cross section oi Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows 3, 3.
Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the togglehead in positionfor insertion.
Fig. 5 is a blank from which the head may be formed. 7
As illustrated I preferably use a threaded bolt 12 having one end 18 thereofflattened. In this flattened portion I provide a journal 13 forming trunnions on either side of the flattened portion 12, on which I pivotally mount a toggle head 1% formed from a blank substantially as shown in Fig. 5. I also provide on the flattened portion 18 of the bolt 12 a lug 19 to serve as an anchor to one end of a spring 17. In the said blank 14 I provide perforations 15. and flanges 16; the perforat ons 15 being so arranged that when the blank 14 is folded over in a substantially U shapedmanner as shown in Fig. 3, the said perforations register and provide for the mounting of the toggle head on the trunnions 13. The flange portions 16 are adapted to be turned inwardly at substantially right angles to the Wing 7 portions 21, primarily to strengthen the Wing portions, one of them also being intended to form a channel buttress for one end of the spring 17 the spring 17 has a coiled portion surrounding the trunnion 13, its opposite end resting against the lug 19 on the flattened portion of member 12, thus offering tension resistance against the 1926. $ria1No.104,3/7. p
flexing of the spring when the toggle head is rotatively moved on the trunnions. On the flattened portion 18 of the bolt 12 I provide a shoulder 20, this shoulder is adapted to form resistance to the travel in one direction of Qis the toggle head member when impelled by the spring 17 the opposite corner of the flattened portion 18 is rounded so that the toggle head 14 may freely revolve in one direction over a quarter of a circle. When the toggle head 14 60 is assembled upon the trunnions with the spring 17 in the channel of the toggle head,
I preterablyupset the ends of the trunnion 13 so as to keep the toggle head 14 enclosed spring 17 definitely in place. I preferably Q55 sharpen one end or" one wing extension of the toggle head, and the sharpened end is preferably the end opposite the end providing the flange for resistance to the spring, and this sharpening is to adapt the toggle head to be driven into and through certain classes of building material with the blow of a hammer or like instrument, enabling the said toggle to go through a hole the diameter of the U shaped portion of the toggle head, the toggle T5 head automatically opening into a transverse toggling position after it has passed through a wall structure to operate on the oposite side.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described the combination with a bolt having a bearing portion of a pivotally associated member having opposed wing extensions tapering from the center outwardly and having a base portion adapted to have a bearing extending in opposite directions from the bolt, one of the said wing extensions being sharpened whereby it may be freely driven through a wall material and having means associated between the bolt and the wing member normally causing it to rotate to an anchoring position transverse of the bolt when released from stress.
2. In an anchoring device a bolt member having trunnions adjacent to one end thereof, 195 a substantially balanced single piece anchoring member pivotally operated on said trunnions; said anchoring member having wing extensions, disposed in opposite directions, one of said wing extensions being sharpened i whereby it may be readily driven through Wall material; means whereby the said anchoring member may be folded along the bolt, its sharpened point being at one extremity thereof; means operative between the anchoring member and the bolt normally tending to force the anchoring member to an anchoring position transverse of the bolt.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a toggle head -formed from a sheet of metal, a central U shaped body portion having registering bearing holes transverse thereof, an arm extension of each side Wall of the U shaped portionoppositely disposed each said arm extension tapering from the central body portion to a base line and having its inclined edge bent at an angle thereto.
4. An article of manufacture comprising a toggle head formed from a sheet of metal, a central U shaped body portion having registering bearing holes transverse thereof, an arm extension of each side Wall of the U shaped portion-oppositely disposed, a 10ngitudinal edge of the arm extension bent at an angle thereto, one of the arm extensions tapering to substantially a point for pressure penetration.
